Chapter Thirty
Yami no Otaru Part II
Sorano stared at the scroll that now occupied her nightstand. It had been three days since Kaeda had given it to her and she still didn't understand what it was or what it was for. Sorano sighed to herself as she sat on the edge on her bed, never taking her eyes off the yellowed scroll. Another mystery to add to the pile. Sorano ran a hand through her hair as she remembered what Kaeda had told them all in the conference room.
~*~*~*~*~
Sorano hadn't missed the look in Kaeda's eye. It was shining with what Sorano could only call hope. Does this scroll really mean that much? Kaeda's holding it like it's the key to defeating the darkness that is coming. Kaeda silently looked at everyone in the room until her eye fell on Sorano. Their eyes locked for what seemed to be hours as Kaeda looked into her very soul. The room fell silent as Kaeda walked towards Sorano with a small smile on her face.
“Sorano when Seiko came to me and handed me two scrolls I was a little hesitant to allow them to stay here at the Alliance. He told me of strange tales and long since forgotten times. I honestly thought that he had lost it. But the tales that he told me of have slowly come to hand. I still don't fully understand what he was talking about but I know that he said when the time came I was to give one scroll to Kagome and… the other to you.”
Sorano glanced around the room before looking once again at Kaeda, “Me? Why would he want to give me a scroll? All he said to me was that I had the key to the Higurashi Fortune.”
Kaeda smiled softly, “He told me that the Higurashi family was in the safest hands of a youkai of light and when she came to show her true colours I was to give her this scroll. Well Sorano I know that that youkai is none other then you. You have shown your true colours today by unleashing Yami no Otaru.”
Sorano shook her head, “I still don't understand.”
Kaeda held out the scroll to Sorano, “When you read this you may.” Sorano reached out and grabbed the scroll.
~*~*~*~*~
A soft knock on the door drew Sorano from her thoughts. “Hai?”
“Sorano?” Sorano smiled to herself at the soft voice of Rin. Sorano glanced at her grandfather clock that stood in the far corner of her room and shook her head. It was nearing three in the morning. Sorano walked across the room and opened the door to see the bushy haired Rin. The scent of salt hit her nose as Rin looked up at her.
“Oh Rin what's wrong?” Sorano had barely spoken before Rin hurled herself at Sorano. She was thankful to be a youkai, as the force would have easily knocked over a ningen.
“Can… can I sleep with you tonight?” Sorano gently pulled Rin away from her to look at her face. She looked scared.
“Of course you can. But are you going to tell me what brought this on?” Rin sniffed and wiped at her eyes with the back of her hand but remained silent. “Tell you what. Why don't you go and freshen up a little in the bathroom, grab a glass of water, and then come to bed. By then do you think you will want to tell me what is bothering you?”
Rin sniffed again as she nodded and headed to the on suite bathroom. Sorano smiled sadly to herself. I thought Rin was over having nightmares. What could have triggered them again? Sorano walked around her room and started shutting off the lamps that she had left on as she walked around earlier in thought. Sorano heard the tell tale sounds of water running as she reached her fireplace. Everywhere that they had lived Sorano had to have a fireplace in her room. She loved the natural light and warmth that burning wood brought forth. She added a few logs to the dying flames before she headed back to her bed.
Sorano had just sat on the edge of the bed when the door to the bathroom opened. Sorano slipped off her slippers as she reached for her brush on the nightstand. She felt the bed slightly sink as Rin climbed into her king sized bed. She shifted herself slightly to look at Rin. She was sitting up and was white knuckling her glass of water. “Sweety why don't you put your water on the nightstand and get under the blankets.”
Rin silently did as Sorano asked. She flipped back the covers and climbed under herself. Very gently she pulled Rin to her and started to brush out the tangles that had adored her curly black locks. They stayed silent for a while as Rin's breathing evened out and her sniffles all but vanished. Sorano started to hum softly to the silent room.
“Sorano?”
“Hmm?”
Rin twisted herself around so that she was hugging Sorano, “You're not going to leave us are you?”
Sorano stiffened slightly at Rin's bluntness, “What would make you ask that?”
Rin wrapped her arms more around Sorano, “I had a dream. But it wasn't like any dream I've ever had before. In my dream someone was after you and because of that you left us. I called out to you but you just kept walking away.” Sorano could smell salt once again as Rin buried her head into Sorano's shoulder. “I yelled and yelled but you didn't stop.”
“Shhh.” Sorano rubbed her back in small circles, “I would never just leave. And if you yell out to me I will always look back.”
Rin looked up at Sorano, “But!”
Sorano placed a finger to her lips, “What have I always told you?”
Rin hiccoughed, “That a youkai's word is their bond.”
Sorano smiled softly at Rin, “And?”
Rin smiled slightly, “You said that you would never leave me.”
“That's my word.” Rin wiped at her eyes as her smile widened.
“Will you sing to me like you used to?”
Sorano wrapped her arms around Rin as she pulled the blankets up.
When I look
Up at the stars
When I see
That the distance is far
I will remember
Just who we are
We are one
We are the same
We come from a place
Held in are hearts
What is mine is yours
What is yours is mine
When I look
Up at the stars
When I see
That the distance is far
I will remember
Just who we are
I will remember…
Sorano looked down at Rin and smiled at her peaceful expression. “I will remember my word Rin.”

“COME ON SESSHOMARU!! WE'RE GOING TO BE LATE!!!” Inuyasha grinned to himself as he heard the growls coming from upstairs.
“Inuyasha is it really necessary to scream at the top of your lungs this early in the morning?”
Inuyasha `kehed' at Miroku as he tapped his foot impatiently on the marble floor. If he doesn't hurry up we're going to be late for school. He hadn't been able to see Kagome alone for three days and it was driving his youkai blood crazy. Then to top it off Sesshomaru was running late for the first time… well ever.
“Sesshomaru I swear to all the Kami-sama that are listening…!”
“Enough hanyou. I am right here.” Inuyasha looked up at the stairs and smirked. He was dressed in what looked like a suit. The only difference was he wasn't wearing a tie and he left the top two buttons unfastened.
“Planning on making a business deal or asking Sorano to marry you at school?”
Sesshomaru glared at Inuyasha as he descended the stairs. “Some of us Inuyasha like to dress according to our standing in society.” Sesshomaru looked Inuyasha up and down “I look the part and you look like a lowly hanyou. So now we can leave for school.”
Inuyasha growled and jumped at Sesshomaru. Miroku was quicker as he grabbed Inuyasha about the middle. “Inuyasha if you and Sesshomaru fight we really will be late for school and I for one wish to spend some time with my flower Sango before classes.”
Inuyasha growled out as Sesshomaru led the way out of the house.

Kagome stood on the roof to the school staring out over the field. Something was bothering her but she just couldn't put her finger on it. Four days ago now they had fought and sealed Mystic. Four days ago Sorano had unlocked Yami no Otaru. Four days ago everything seemed to happen all at once and now everything was peaceful. Too peaceful for Kagome. There had been no youkai activity and the guys were moving along great at the Alliance.
“I thought that I would find you if I came up here.”
Kagome turned and smiled at Sorano, “I don't think that I could ever hide from you Sorano.”
Sorano smirked as she walked over to Kagome, “Hide from me no but hide from your mate… yes?”
Kagome grinned sheepishly, “I know Inuyasha wants to spend time with me but I don't think that I would make very good company right now.”
Sorano leaned on the railing as she looked out over the schoolyard, “Oh? Why is that?”
Kagome leaned against the rail as she looked up at the fluffy lazy clouds as they grazed across the sky, “I just have a strange feeling that something isn't right. I can't really explain it but it is as if we are meant to do something but I don't know what.”
“How long have you felt this way?”
Kagome looked sideways at Sorano, “Since the morning that you unleashed Yami no Otaru.”
Sorano looked at Kagome out of the corner of her eye, “Since then? Why didn't you tell me or anyone else for that matter?”
Kagome shrugged as she turned around and leaned her back against the rail, “I didn't really think it was that important and I thought that the feeling would just go away.”
Sorano rolled to her side, “When has one of your feelings ever just gone away? Miko you know that if we are going to do something about these feelings of yours you need to tell someone. If you're not comfortable telling me you can always tell Sango or Rin.”
Kagome huffed to herself, “I know I can tell you anything.” Kagome bit her lip as she tried to figure out how to word what she really wanted to ask Sorano.
“I haven't opened it.”
Kagome looked at Sorano, “Huh?”
Sorano grinned, “I haven't opened my scroll.”
Kagome cocked an eyebrow, “How did you…?”
Sorano smirked as she pushed herself off the railing, “I had a feeling that you were wondering how to ask me if I had read what your Jii-chan had written to me.”
Kagome looked at the roof, “Have you thought about opening it?”
Sorano sighed as she sat down and leaned against the railing, “Yeah of course I have. But I keep hearing this nagging voice in the back of head telling me that Seiko wrote that I was a huge failure. That I failed to protect his family.”
“Silence!” Kagome balled her hands into fists at her sides. She was angry with Sorano for even thinking that. How could she think that Jii-chan would yell at her! She didn't even know! It's not even remotely her fault!
“Kagome…”
“It wasn't your fault! How could it be? It is all Mystic's fault. He came after my family. He destroyed them looking for the Secret.” Kagome knelt down and locked eyes with Sorano, “Please Sorano, never blame yourself for that. It wasn't your fault.”
Sorano looked away and nodded. Kagome shook her head and sighed as took a seat next to Sorano. You'll always blame yourself for that day won't you Sorano? No matter what I say or do you will always think it's your fault.
The two sat in silence for a time and just enjoyed the others company. The gentle breeze played with Kagome's hair as she leaned against Sorano. I always feel so calm around Sorano. I will never grow tired of this feeling.
“Hey Kagome?”
“Hum?”
“I think tonight we should both open our scrolls.”
Kagome leaned away from Sorano to look at her face but she kept her gaze looking ahead. “Really?”
Sorano nodded her head, “Yeah but I think we should open them at the Shrine.”
Kagome smiled softly, “I think my Jii-chan would have wanted that.”
***
Inuyasha shivered slightly as he stared at Goshinboku. They had been at the Shrine for nearly an hour and still Sorano wasn't there. Even the God Tree wasn't bringing Inuyasha the calmness that he usually felt in its presence. It was as if the tree itself knew that was something very important was going to happen.
“This is getting stupid. I'm nearly freezing and still Sorano isn't here.”
Inuyasha turned and nodded at Sango. He would never admit it himself but he was starting to feel the cold. It was turning out to be one of the coldest nights in August and they were all standing around in very light jackets. Miroku walked over to Sango and wrapped his arms around her. Inuyasha smirked as Sango flinched slightly before startling against the monk.
Kagome walked over to Inuyasha and wrapped her arms about his waist. Well it's not the contact that I wanted but at least I can feel her touching me. Inuyasha nuzzled his head into Kagome's neck as she started to speak. “Sorano had to go to the Alliance. She said that if she was running really late she would call.”
Sango huffed, “I would say that she is running really late. She said that she would be here at seven and it's almost eight. The one night off from the Alliance and we end here doing Alliance work.”
Kagome shrugged, “I don't think reading my Jii-chan's letters are Alliance work. Though I am really nervous as to what they say.”
Rin smiled at Kagome, “I don't think there is anything to worry about Kagome. Your Jii-chan was a very kind and honest person. Plus if whatever is written in there can help us I say we read it.”
“I couldn't have put it better myself Rin.” Sango and Miroku jumped as Sorano materialized out of thin air behind them.
“Damn it Sorano!”
Sorano smiled at the couple as she walked towards Sesshomaru. The two spoke quietly to each other for a moment before Sorano leaned up and kissed his cheek. “I apologize for making you all wait. I wished to speak to Kaeda before we opened the scrolls.”
Kagome cocked her head at Sorano, “Talk to Kaeda?”
Sorano nodded, “Hai. She was the last one to talk to Seiko before he died and I wanted to know what he told her.”
Inuyasha wrapped his arms more securely around Kagome before staring at Sorano, “And?”
“She said that once he handed over the scrolls he started to talk about his ancestors. He went off about how his great-great-grandfather had found a way to hide the Higurashi Fortune and that he didn't tell another living soul where he had hidden it. He then said that it would prove difficult for Kagome to find them. That's when he discovered the hidden power of Yami no Otaru.”
“Hidden power?”
Sorano looked at Rin and frowned, “I didn't know what she was talking about either and it seems that Seiko never told Kaeda what he was talking about either. He said that my scroll would lead the way to his ancestor and that Kagome's scroll was the map. Other then that she didn't know anything about the scrolls or what Seiko was talking about.”
Kagome sighed, “I guess my Jii-chan was more of a mystery then I remember. He always loved talking about the artefacts that the Higurashi family had. But he never spoke of the a Fortune.”
Sesshomaru now stepped forward, “Then I think it is time that we opened the scrolls and find out what is going on.”
Sorano nodded at Sesshomaru as she reached into her pocket and pulled out the yellowed scroll. Sorano turned the scroll over in her hand a few times as if inspecting it for any booby traps. She ran her thumb over the wax seal slowly before she took a deep breath and broke the seal. The minute the seal was broken the wind started to pick up. The leaves of Goshinboku fluttered and rustled in the strange wind. Inuyasha shivered, this time not because he was cold, but instead because of a strange power that he felt.
Then suddenly the wind stopped. “That was strange…”
“I agree.”
Inuyasha jumped slightly. He hadn't realized that he had voiced his thoughts aloud. At least it only seemed that Kagome had heard that he had spoken aloud. Everyone once again turned his or her attention back to Sorano as she started to unroll the scroll.
Sorano looked at the scroll as she cocked an eyebrow. “I don't understand this… How could Seiko know that language?”
“What language?” Sesshomaru walked over to Sorano as she showed him the scroll, “I don't understand this language.”
Kagome walked over to Sorano and looked down at the scroll. “I've seen that writing before. It's on the gravestone of Higurashi Sho. But I never knew what it said.”
Sorano smiled sadly as she spoke very softly, “Higurashi Sho's gravestone says, `The deeds I died for will forever live on as long as the Higurashi live.'”
Kagome looked at Sorano, “How do you know what it says?”
Sorano looked up at the heavens as her smile faded, “It is the language of light. My native tongue.”
Sesshomaru looked at the scroll, “Well the only thing that I understand is that it says that everyone needs to stand in a circle around the `Light' while they are holding Yami no Otaru.”
Sorano looked at everyone, “While let's see what happens shall we. Everyone around me in a circle.”
Inuyasha shrugged at Sango as they formed a circle around Sorano. Sorano held out her hand as a strange dark mist coiled vertically from her hand. Sorano's eyes flashed as the mist solidified and formed into her staff.
Sorano looked around at everyone and nodded, “Here goes:
Keie oph Darchnesh I kall iaphon the'
Thranshcend thime and realmsh tho he'ar me
I inuoche the phouer oph Chaos
Listhen tho the earths oph the Ghanian
He'ar the shoiandsh oph the uind

Suddenly the orbs on Yami no Otaru's burst with light. The ground shook as a stream of light etched itself in a wide circle around Inuyasha and the others. When the light created a complete circle the ground broke away as blue light erupted through the cracks in the earth. Inuyasha gasped as he felt his feet leave the ground. His heart felt like it was being ripped from his chest as the wind was knocked from his lungs.
Inuyasha felt a surge from Kagome through their mating mark as the blue light blinded him to everything that was around him. Suddenly a wind started to blow and it felt that they were falling. Inuyasha closed his eyes as the intensity of the light made his eyes water. The last thing Inuyasha heard was a soft voice inside his head speaking to his very soul, “Open your heart my little Inuyasha and all will be well.”
