Chapter Ten:
Kaede smiled as she saw the companions approach. It was midday when they arrived. "Did everything go well?" she asked.
They told her about Naraku's cause and Koga joining them. Kagome then explained how she had talked to Sesshomaru, but still needed to find Kikyo. "I can't give her life back to her," the young miko stated, "but I can help her find peace."
The elderly priestess nodded. "I see."
Kagome sighed and looked to Inuyasha. "I need to return to my time," she told him. "We need provisions and I want to tell Mom about us and the upcoming battle. I want her to know in case I can't come back right away."
He agreed and said, "I'll come with you."
They bid farewell to the others and went to the well. Kagome smiled as she stood on the edge of the well. "Mom's going to be so happy for us," she told him excitedly right before they jumped.
~~~
Mrs. Higurashi hugged her daughter. "I'm so happy for you both," she exclaimed.
Kagome smiled. Souta looked at the couple curiously and asked, "Does this mean Inuyasha is going to be my big brother?"
Kagome giggled, "We aren't married, Souta."
"You should be," the little boy grumbled. "You two act like you are, anyway."
"How would you know?" his older sister questioned, slowly putting her hands on her hips.
He just shrugged. Kagome waved him off and beamed up at Inuyasha.
The hanyou didn't know what to do or how to react. Kagome's family had always been kind to him, accepted him. But, this was different. They really didn't mind that he and Kagome were together. More than that, they began treating him like he was part of the family.
Grandpa had left to clean out the spare room and turn it into a room for Inuyasha. Mrs. Higurashi insisted Inuyasha refer to her as "Mom." Now, according to Souta, Inuyasha had a kid brother.
Kagome squeezed his hand. "We should get our stuff and get going," she announced.
Inuyasha looked at her and tilted his head. "Aren't you going to tell your mom first?" he asked.
It took Kagome a moment to realize what he was talking about. Then it dawned on her. The battle. In all the excitement of her and Inuyasha, she had forgotten about the battle. She paled slightly as she said solemnly, "Mom? We need to talk. You might want to sit down."
The older woman paled as she took a seat. It was her worst fears realized. She looked at Inuyasha, then at Kagome. No wonder they were making their relationship official. "Your pregnant," she guessed.
"WHAT?!" Kagome shouted as Inuyasha's eyes flew open. Kagome gave a nervous laugh as she shook her head. "I don't know how you came to that conclusion, but I am definantly not pregnant."
Mrs. Higurashi breathed a sigh of relief. At least, until Kagome started telling her about the upcoming battle. Silence filled the house as Mother took in the information. Kagome knew it would be hard for her, but she assured her it would be ok.
"Inuyasha and I know what we are doing. And, this time, we have help. Lots of help. Not only is my friend Koga and his gang going to help, but I think I've convinced Inuyasha's older brother as well," she explained, trying to calm her mother down.
"I wouldn't count on him," Inuyasha mumbled.
Mrs. Higurashi spoke up, "You will protect my daughter, won't you, Inuyasha? You won't let anything bad happen to her?"
The hanyou looked at her curiously. In that moment, she reminded him of his own mother. All the love for her daughter was written on her face as her eyes reddened with tears.
"I promise you," he vowed. "They will have to kill me before they will get anywhere near Kagome. Nothing, and no one, is going to touch her. I won't allow it."
Mrs Higurashi stood up and hugged her daughter tightly. She then did something Inuyasha hadn't expected. She walked up to the hanyou and hugged him as well. Still holding tight to him, she whispered through her tears, "Just come home safely. Both of you."
The hanyou was at a loss for words. She was crying over his welfare? It was something he expected from Kagome, but not from anyone else. He was a half demon, after all. The thought of Kagome's love had been a blessing to Inuyasha, but the idea... Was it possible for others to love him for who he was rather than what he was?
It was then he realized that this woman, this human woman, did not just worry over her daughter. She worried for him as well. It was more than Inuyasha could ever dream for.
"Your mother is a strange woman," Inuyasha commented as they stepped out of the well and began walking back to the village.
Kagome glanced at him curiously. "How so?"
He reached into his robe and pulled out a small box. He handed the box to her. "She gave me that and told me I should use it."
Kagome looked at the box and nearly fainted. Her mom had given him condoms?! He watched her reaction and shrugged. "I read the box, so I know what they are," he told her. He then gazed at her curiously, "You wouldn't really make me wear one of those things, would you?"
She just stared at him. "What makes you think we'll be doing anything that would require the use of these?" she demanded.
He glared at her. "You're the one always talking about getting together. Besides, we are a couple," he retorted.
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean..."
"Don't tell me we sleep in a tree every night together and talk about that, yet you don't have any plans on actually doing it," he interrupted, his voice rising. "And I'm not the only one who thinks something is going to happen eventually. Remember? It was your mom who gave those to me to begin with."
She stopped walking and just stared at him. She told herself to be calm. Who did he think he was? "Yes, Inuyasha," she stated, answering his orginial question. "If something were to happen, I would expect you to have enough respect for me to wear one of these."
He blinked and paled considerably before his face reddened in anger. He erupted, "It you think I'm putting one of those things anywhere near me..."
"You'd do it for me," Kagome stopped him. "Inuyasha, these things stop pregnancies."
That sobered the hanyou up considerably. He could feel his heart clenching in his chest, preparing himself for what was to come. He whispered, "But, I thought... I thought you loved me and didn't care whether I was a half demon or not."
It was Kagome's turn to blink as she gazed at him in confusion. "What does my love for you have to do with this? Of course I love you."
He snorted, "Then why wouldn't you want to have children with me?"
Now she understood. She had to keep reminding herself how he had been raised. The fact that people here, both demons and humans, believed hanyous to be a disgrace to both species. She put a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Nothing would make me happier then to give you children," she assured him. Then, she added, "Right now, we have more important things to worry about. If I were to have a child now, it would be one more thing for Naraku to use against us. I'm not taking that chance, that risk. If something were to happen to my baby..."
"As amusing as this is, I don't have time for this nonsense," interrupted an all too familiar voice.
The couple whirled to find Sesshomaru standing behind them. Rin and Jaken stood off to his side. Kagome could feel the heat of embarrassment run to her cheeks. "How much of that did you hear?" she asked, timidly.
Rin smiled. "You and Lord Inuyasha are planning to have children?"
Kagome's eyes widened. Now she was really embarrassed. She shook her head. "Not for a while, Rin," she told the girl.
Sesshomaru raised a single eyebrow. "How long do humans have to bare children?" he asked, curiously.
"I still have plenty of time, buster!" Kagome shouted, putting her hands on her hips. She hated being embarrassed and she didn't feel comfortable having this conversation with the demon lord.
"What do you want, Sesshomaru?" Inuyasha growled. He knew if he didn't do something fast, he and Kagome wouldn't get close to this conversation again for a while. It was one he wanted to finish, too.
The taiyoukai looked at the couple for a moment. "I've considered your offer, priestess," he said to Kagome. "I will attack Naraku regardless whether you are present or not. However, I know you will be a powerful ally."
Kagome gave him an inquisitive glance. "How did you come upon that conclusion?" she asked, wanting to know.
Inuyasha rolled his eyes. "Who cares?" he snarled. "Question is, Sesshomaru, are you joining us or aren't you? We have other things to do today."
"You'll have plenty of time to plan your future," Sesshomaru commented. "If you live that long."
"Would you two stop it!" Kagome fussed. "This is a serious matter. I can't have you fighting each other when we have to fight Naraku."
Sesshomaru raised a single eyebrow. "How much longer will it be before you attack Naraku?" he asked the miko.
Kagome thought about it for a moment. In all honesty, they didn't even know where Naraku was. She shrugged, for she didn't have a better answer.
Sesshomaru turned and began walking away from them. "I will join your cause, priestess," he told her. "When you decide when you plan to attack, find me and I will walk beside you into battle."
"How odd," Kagome whispered as she watched the demon lord leave with the small child and the toad.
Inuyasha looked at her curiously. "What's odd?" he questioned.
She tilted her head to the side slightly and shrugged. "I don't think I've ever heard Sesshomaru freely give his help like that. Perhaps that's all I needed to do all along," she commented.
"Who cares?" Inuyasha snorted. "You do realize he'll still expect you to keep your promise. I can't believe you're actually considering giving his arm back."
She wheeled on him. "What do you expect?" she demanded. "I can't very well not do so. Besides, it was enough to convince him to join us," she added. Then, she thought about it before suggesting, "Or maybe, all he needed for convincing was the idea of Rin being safe."
The hanyou shrugged. "I doubt it."
