Chapter 172 - The Excuse *Damage* and *Distress* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
Sesshoumaru's heart was in his throat while his stomach twisted into knots. Did Kagome no longer wish to be his mate? But she had just declared her love for him moments before. What was wrong? What was it she was trying to say? Since their romantic encounter by the hot spring when his beast had cut her he worried she would realize that she deserved better, or begin to think her mate-to-be should never cause her injury. He feared that he had caused irreparable damage to her trust in him, but she assured him it was okay, that she wasn't upset. Why, now, would she be balking at him finally making her his mate?
Kagome was trying to think of an excuse that would sound plausible for why he couldn't mark her as his mate that night, but it was rough going. In reality, she wanted to wait until her surprise was finished in the hopes of making their mating night something especially memorable for them both. She wanted to see that look in his eyes again, that deer in headlights expression she first witnessed when she entered the room in nothing but her skimpy jammies. He looked so overwhelmed and aroused by her, and it made her feel incredibly powerful and beautiful. She wanted to recreate that moment, only with something even better. She just needed the time to have it made.
Grasping at straws, the miko finally settled on a plan. She looked up into his eyes and spotted something she didn't like in his gaze. He looked terrified, and Kagome shook her head. "Would you stop worrying about the blood? You cut me. So what? I'm fine with it, I promise. I'd let you do it now if you wanted to, if it made you happy. That has nothing to do with this!"
"Then why do you no longer wish to be my mate?"
The miko rolled her eyes. "I never said that! I just think we should wait a few days."
Sesshoumaru's eyes narrowed in question. "Why? If it has nothing to do with what happened earlier today, then what has changed?"
Kagome sighed. "See, in my time, sometimes couples will... abstain for a while before they get married. No sex for a week or more leading up to the ceremony. It makes the wedding night that much more passionate and special."

"And this is what you wish to do?" he asked, trying to hide his disbelief and the distress that came with it. He still had that sinking feeling inside that everything good in his life, everything that she had given him, was going to dissolve and leave him back where he started, totally and utterly alone.
"I think it sounds like a good idea," she lied. In truth, she would love to be with him again, that night and every night forever, but she needed a way to put off the mating, and this was the only thing she could think of that sounded plausible.
She didn't know that he could scent her lie, which only increased his worry. Still, he hid it from her as best he could, which wasn't very effective. She could see the difference in his golden orbs, and Kagome sighed again.
"And I want to have my surprise for you before we mate, alright? Now quit freaking out in the most stoic way possible and relax!"
That time, Sesshoumaru could sense her sincerity and relaxed. "Just what is this surprise?" he asked as he swung open the door to their chambers.
Kagome shook her finger at him. "It's a surprise, that's what it is, so no more asking, Mister. And don't you dare go down to the seamstress and ask, either! I'm going to have to check out some fabrics in the village, too, and when I do, you're going to make yourself scarce. I will not have you ruining this."
"I wouldn't think of it," he purred before gently setting her on her feet. "If you wish to wait, then that is what we will do."
"So you think you can handle that?" she asked with a grin.
"It will be absolute torture, but I believe I will survive."
