Chapter 1: Well This Sucks

For the next two days Inuyasha sat in the god's tree, snappy almost to the point of being violent. He had watched the sun set twice, and when it rose on the third day he ran to the well to wait. The sun set again, but Kagome didn't emerge. Maybe she can't get back through because she forgot the jewel. He reasoned. He was about to jump in and get her when an old voice stopped him.

"Inuyasha." Lady Kaede emerged from the wood.

"What do you want ya old hag?"

"Ye cannot go and retrieve Kagome."

"Why not?"

"There is something ye need to know. Follow me back to the hut please." with that Kaede turned and walked to the hut. Inuyasha reluctantly followed.

"Now that we are all here I will tell you what I should have told you the day Kagome left. Ye posses the Shikon no Tama, am I correct?"

"How did you know?" Inuyasha responded.

"It wasn't a mistake that it was left here. Kagome didn't know it, but now that the jewel is whole again when Kagome jumped through the well, she, so-to-speak, chose her destiny."

"I don't understand woman! What are you talking about?"

Kaede sighed heavily as she tried to find the right words to explain, "Ye see, Kagome doesn't belong here, the jewel knew that. Now that the jewel is whole again, I will be it's guardian, just as Kikyou was. Even though it was Kagome's job it is now mine because of the continuum's events. Do ye understand?"

"No." Inuyasha replied dully. "Your 'theory' makes no sense. So it's Kagome's job to take care of the jewel so you get to do it? Where does that make sense? And why can't I go through the well to see her?"

"If you go through the well it will lead to more complications in the space-time-continuum. I had a long talk with Kagome about this once. She said that in her time they know of a theory that says the space-time-continuum cannot be tampered with because it can change important events in the past and make the future far worse! The Shikon no Tama knows this, and will be honored by not being disturbed any longer. If Kagome still had the Shikon no Tama there is no telling what would happen to her in her world. No, it is better that she is not with the jewel anymore. Though I do ask Inuyasha, I am old, and when I die would you..." her voice trailed off slightly.

"What?"

"Would you look after the jewel when I die. I know I can trust you, I have faith." Inuyasha's eye's widened at such a request.

"You want me to look after the jewel? I'd be honored." Kaede smiled placidly and allowed for her tale to sink into the minds of her 'children'.

"So I'll never see Kagome again?!" Shippo began crying loudly and Sango hugged him closely.

"We'll all miss her. It will be okay. Don't think of sad things, think of the good times you had with her." Sango's words were spoken to Shippo but Inuyasha took them to heart.

"She is right Shippo. Be strong."

Kagome awoke the next morning feeling remarkably better. She had only blacked out for a few minutes and blamed it on not eating right. After dressing and eating a light breakfast she made her way to school. She recognized all the buildings and all the same people she saw every day. *Who is this Inuyasha my mother speaks of? I think she needs to see a doctor.* Kagome tried not to think of this as she walked to school.

"Hey Kagome! Long time no see. How is your rheumatism?" Hojo walked shyly up to Kagome who smiled joyously and played along.

"Oh it's fine I guess. I haven't felt any pain. I did get a dizzying headache yesterday, but I don't think that was rheumatism."

"Oh no, you don't think that your brain is malfunctioning do you?" Hojo placed a comforting hand on Kagome's shoulder.

"Eh, no. I'm fine. Why is everyone acting so crazy lately?" Kagome sighed picked up her pace.

"I was wondering if you could sit through dinner Friday, and maybe a movie."

"Um," why do I feel compelled to say 'no'. It's not right. Another headache accompanied by Hojo's voice.

"Are you okay? Do you need the nurse?"

"Oh no, I'm fine. Sure, dinner sounds fine." Kagome breathed heavily and closed her eye's so the world would stop spinning. A flash of silver and red played in her mind and she shot her eye's open wide. Suddenly her headache was gone and she felt much better. "Well, let's get to class."

At lunch Kagome sat with the same people she always sat with. Somehow she found them more interesting today then she had in her entire life. She listened to every word they said, from The Lord of the Rings winning all eleven awards it was nominated for, to who was dating who.

"And did you know there is a new student starting Monday. Yeah, I don't know his name."

"I heard his name was Ship.. oh what was it... Shipop? Anyway, I hear he is too cute for words!" Eri squealed with excitement.

"Are you going to work tonight Kagome?" Yuki asked from across the table.

"I have work tonight?" her friend nodded dully. "Oh, then I guess I am."

"Good, we'll come see you." Kagome nodded happily. She loved her job, though she couldn't remember working much. She had the job since she was sixteen, but could only remember actually entering the building maybe thirty times in two years.

The bell echoed through the large cafeteria, "Well I'll see you guys tonight. Have a good day." Kagome stood up and walked up the two flights of stairs to her favorite class, Studies of Feudal Japan. She didn't know why it was her favorite class, but she just knew, it was.

"I can't wait to see the look on her face when I surprise her. I might not have been able to see her for the passed five hundred years, but there is nothing stopping me now." Inuyasha smiled happily as he walked with Shippo out of the shrine yard.

"I can't wait either. This is going to be great!" Though the young fox appeared to be in his late teens he still acted, and sometimes spoke, with a childish air.

"Will you ever grow up munchkin?"

"Someday. But then I'll be an old man like you!" he stuck his tongue out and prepared to run away. Inuyasha just rolled his eyes as he turned left.

"It was nice of Mrs. Higarashi to tell us where she worked."

"Hai." Shippo agreed. "Oh I can't wait to see her! Five hundred years!"

"You think you can't wait? She's my mate!" Inuyasha stopped suddenly as he found the building he was searching for. "There it is The Entertainment House. That sounds kind of kinky." Inuyasha smiled to himself.

"That's just wrong Yash. Just go in." Shippo opened the front door and a there was a soft clatter of bells. "This place is nice."

"Oh it's a movie store."

"What did you think it was?" he looked at Inuyasha who walked away without answering. "Lecher."

"Hey that was Miroku's job." Inuyasha called back.

"Do you ever miss them?" Shippo walked closer to Inuyasha.

"Of course, they were our best friends for like eighty years. But that is what happens to humans. They die. It was a long time ago."

"Yeah, I know." Shippo walked listlessly around, not looking for anything in particular. Inuyasha decided to walk to the front desk.

"Hello, welcome to The Entertainment House I am Victoria, what can I do for you?" a short blonde women with deep green eye's stared up at Inuyasha from the stool she was sitting on.

"Hey could you tell me when Kagome Higarashi comes in to work?"

"She should be here any minute. Though usually she calls in sick. That girl has more problems then anyone I know. But I am not one to speak ill of my coworkers." Victoria smiled happily and Inuyasha glared at her with a slight impatience in his gaze. "About five minutes."

"Thank you." he walked back to Shippo and informed him of the time.

"Rock on." was all he said.

Inuyasha wandered through the new releases when the soft scent of cherry blossoms caught his senses. "Kagome." he put back the movie he was looking at- The House of a Thousand Corpses- and turned to see Kagome wave good-bye to Victoria. He slowly crept up behind her and placed his arms around her in the same protective manner he always used.

She jumped up but didn't feel frightened. She felt safe and secure inside the arms that surrounded her.

"Did you miss me?" Inuyasha asked, his tone sweet and soothing.

Kagome turned around to look at him. He had gorgeous silver hair that flowed down his shoulders to the small of his back. He wore a black baggy sweatshirt and oversized dark blue jeans. He wore a rosary around his neck with beautiful rustic beads and seemed to have fangs on it. She noticed he also had dog ears perched gently atop his head. Instinctively she reached up and began scratching behind his ears. He purred contently and moved his head into her touch. Suddenly she pulled away and Inuyasha looked at her dumbstruck.

"What's wrong?"

"Who are you?" she asked.

"Funny wench." he rolled his eyes. "Why didn't you tell me about the space-time-continuum?"

"Don't call me a wench! You baka!" Images flashed in her mind, the flash of silver and red, the well, a large tree, jewel? "Why would I talk to you about the space-time-continuum I don't even know you!"

"Kagome. How could you not-"

"How do you know my name?" her voice held panic now and Shippo noticed the raise in her voice so he walked over.

"Hey Kagome! Did you miss us?" he asked brightly.

"Who are you people?! Leave me alone!" her head throbbed dully, but painfully, she massaged her temples in an attempt to ease the pain.

"Surely you remember me." Shippo effortlessly turned into his child-like self with a soft 'pop'. Looking down at the young Kitsune Kagome's breathing grew more shallow and she blacked out again.

Inuyasha and Shippo closed the movie store and brought Kagome home. They explained the predicament to Mrs. Higarashi who nodded a few times, listening to every detail before forming her own conclusions.

"Well, it seems to me that when Kagome made her 'choice', the Shikon no Tama took it upon itself to erase her memories of the past all together. I don't think she will be remember you any time soon. The more she tries, the more she blacks out."

"Well this sucks." Inuyasha looked down at his sleeping love. *Can't you remember. Try for me.* He kissed her hand softly and she stirred.

"This really fucking sucks."
