Chapter 8 : Wait, Dad?

"So that human girl is in love with the hanyou. Kukuku……..this information could be very useful. This can be added into my plan. Yes, this is very valuable indeed. But what about the hanyou's love for the dead miko? And her need for revenge on him? I'm sure she would not be too happy to learn of the fireworks between the human wench and that dog. Kanna…………..I need you to go and deliver this message to someone………….."

Inuyasha sat up in the highest branch of a rather large tree that stood on the outskirts of the village. In fact, it was the very same tree that Sango had rested underneath the night before. The same tree which had heard the conversation between Kaede and Sango; a conversation that had reached Inuyasha's superhuman ears. That was why he was away from everyone right now, thinking through what he had heard last night and what this information meant to him.

(A/N: " " = Inuyasha, ` ` = Inuyasha's heart/mind)

"I guess I could admit that I wouldn't want her to die or anything."

`What are you talking about? Of course you don't want her to die! You want her to stay with you, here, forever. Even after the jewel's completed!'

"Keh. That wench has no reason to stay here after the jewel's done. She's just a shard detector."

`Sure she is. That's why you are always so worried about her during battles. That's why after she's gone for not even a day, you get all cranky and end up going to get her. You can't be without her!'

"………"

`Ha! See? Just admit it. You love her.'

"Nani?!" Inuyasha pressed his hands to his ears and tried to quiet the noise.

`Hmph muhm fnmh'

"Huh?" Inuyasha listened to what his heart and mind was telling him. Mocking him, actually.

`You never denied it, is what I said.' Inuyasha punched the branch he was sitting on, which happened to be a big mistake. The branch rattled and shook him off. Landing on a lower branch, Inuyasha reclined against the tree, glad that the voices in his head had disappeared. However, his relaxation was short lived. The scent of a little fox kitsune soon reached the hanyou's powerful nose.

"What does he want now?" Inuyasha growled to himself. He wasn't up for talking to the kit just now. But before he could jump up to a higher branch and pretend that he wasn't there, Shippou reached the tree and spotted him.

"Umm, Inuyasha?" Shippou called up to him hesitantly. Inuyasha sighed. There was no use arguing; he would just get `sat'. But, wait, Kagome wasn't here. This remembrance brought a pang to his heart.

"What do you want, kid?" he called down.

"When is Kagome coming back?" Just saying her name made Shippou feel like crying. `No, I can't cry. Inuyasha always calls me a baby……….' The unshed tears didn't go un-noticed though. Inuyasha's nose picked up the salty smell. Thinking his harsh response had caused Shippou to cry, Inuyasha quickly jumped down to him to attempt to dam up the tears. Unconsciously, Inuyasha pulled Shippou into a comforting embrace. The sudden action allowed Shippou's tears to spill down his face and into Inuyasha's fire rat haori. Inuyasha's clawed hand patted Shippou on the head, attempting to calm the young kit.

"You really care for her, don't you kid." Shippou broke the embrace and looked up to Inuyasha. He nodded his head, sniffling.

"Kagome is one of the only people I have left," Shippou added.

`Wow. He sure has been through a lot. Shippou may need Kagome more than the rest of us…….….maybe even more than me.'
