Chapter 7
~~So She Thought~~

InuYasha leaned back in the tall oak. Hana had calmed down, and was now resting in the tree of her choice. Sesshoumaru had comforted her all the while, acting completely out of character by holding her, comforting her; it scared InuYasha.

“Damn,” he said, shifting his position. He still couldn’t get comfortable, even with Kagome gone. It was as if she was still by his side.

‘I wonder what she’s doing right now.’ It was sometime after midnight, so he guessed she was either up studying or passed out asleep on her desk. Even though he knew she wouldn’t let him in, he still wanted to see her. Maybe he could get her mother or brother to let him in. A scheme was forming in his head. First, InuYasha would get her brother to let him in, since he’s the kid’s hero. Next, he would get the kid to make him some ramen, since he’s the kid’s hero, after all. After that, he would go see Kagome.

His youkai interjected. ‘That’s genius – what are you going to do when she doesn’t want to talk to you?

InuYasha’s confident smile dropped instantly and turned dark. ‘Who the hell asked you? Now be quiet, I’m trying to scheme – er – sleep.’

InuYasha was about to close his eyes in another useless attempt at sleep when his ears perked at the clear sound he heard. He could hear singing, beautiful voices coming from nowhere. He hopped down from his perch and followed the voices. A ways into the darkened forest, the voices seemed to surround InuYasha. He knew they were there, but he was unable to sense just what was singing. He reached the center of a clearing, where the voices seemed to overpower him the most. InuYasha’s ears went flat against his skull as the singing grew louder but never missed a beat. The graceful singing immediately turned to a whine, almost a howl, like a woman weeping as if she had just lost someone she loved dearly. The voice was piercing and emotionally raw. InuYasha thought he would go mad when the voice stopped abruptly. He was about to sigh with relief when he heard something else. He heard whispers from numerous voices, all in different volumes. The echoes of the whispers carried through the trees, carrying across the leaves and winding around the branches. InuYasha struggled to listen, but he could make out what they said. Beneath the whispers, he could hear a faint but sad melody. The forest was obviously sad over something.

InuYasha was bewildered.

“What the hell is this? What the fuck is going on?” He roared. His voice reverberated off the trees and the whispers silenced almost immediately. One small voice whispered to him in singson. InuYasha's eyes widened at these words.

'No...'

He ran. He ran as fast as he could, dodging trees and low-hanging branches. It dawned on him that he didn’t have to run. Soaring through the trees and reaching the clearing in record time, InuYasha landing smoothly in front of Hana, who was now standing by herself.

“Hana,” He said, not even out of breath. “I just heard the most fucked up thing ever.”

Her eyes were downcast. “I know, InuYasha.”

InuYasha scrunched his eyebrows together. “How could you know? You weren’t there.” It hit him before she said it.

“Don’t you remember, InuYasha? I can see the future. I knew this was going to happen for a long time.”

His gaze followed hers. “So, if you knew this was going to happen, why didn’t you tell me? And what the hell were those things making those sounds?”

“I’m not allowed to tell you; let’s leave it at that. What you heard were faeries, protectors of this forest. I’ve had my share of run-ins with them. Trust me; you do not want to get mixed up with them. I mean, you accidentally almost step on one of them and it’s the end of the freakin’ world. Shit, it took forever to heal those wounds.”

InuYasha stared at her with an expression that said you are crazy as all hell, woman.

Hana defended her story. “I’m serious, InuYasha! There really are faeries! I mean, come on, there are demons and whatnot, aren’t there? So why can’t there be faeries?”

InuYasha just wanted this subject to drop, and to drop quickly. “So where’s the bastard?” He asked casually, hoping not to be too casual. Hana didn’t pick up the over-casualty in his tone. “Oh, he went to see if he could find Miroku, Sango, and Shippou, even though I told him he wouldn’t find them. It’ll be a really long time before we see them again.” She flicked an imaginary piece of fuzz off her black sarashi. She wore her outfit the same way InuYasha wore his: all the time. The black pants contrasted sharply with the white top she wore. Its neck came up halfway on hers, multiple buttons lining it. The hem reached the bottom of her hips before it cut off, a tail hanging in the front and back. InuYasha thought she should wear more armor, but she claimed she never needed it. Now she stood there, fingering the hem of her shirt.

Hana continued to stare at the ground. InuYasha She looked up long enough to find a tree and shuffled over to it. There she plopped down in front of its massive trunk. InuYasha settled on his haunches in front of her and cocked his head to side, his ears perked slightly. Hana’s vacant gaze settled on her knees.

It was several minutes before anything was said. “InuYasha,” Hana said, breaking the silence. “What did you hear the faeries say?”

He looked into her eyes. The faeries had said something about him, Kagome, and destiny, the rest he would just like to forget. “I…I’m not sure,” He lied.
Hana seemed content with that answer because she didn’t say anything more. She just continued to stare blankly at her bare, bony knees. InuYasha stood and jumped into the tree that Hana was leaning on. He would be able to protect her better from up there. The words the faeries had said still haunted his memory, and he figured it would be a long time before he could forget them. He could still hear it reverberating off the trees and into his ears. ‘No, it’ll never happen. She would never do that to me. If I keep thinking about it, it really will happen…’

Sesshoumaru searched everywhere around the fight scene. He left no section un-sniffed. He was puzzled. It seemed as if they had just vanished. The stench of Naraku still hung in the air, making Sesshoumaru wrinkle his nose from time to time. It was still cloudy, and the wind had picked up once more, howling with ferocity Sesshoumaru had not known it was capable of making. A new scent filled his nose during his search for the others. He turned to see the small neko demon – the demon slayer’s “pet” – in her small form. She mewed a hello. Sesshoumaru raised an eyebrow in reply. The cat was of no importance to him. Somehow, though, he figured that it would have some significance to InuYasha and Hana.

‘InuYasha will know what to do with this thing,’ He decided.

‘Oh, are you actually admitting that InuYasha is smarter than you?’ His youkai chirped up. ‘And, is that compassion you’re feeling? It was bad enough when you got that little girl, but now you’ve gone and fallen head over heels for some hanyou! I thought you were Sesshoumaru, the master of the cold stare and no soul, but in reality, you’re just a big softy. I’m ashamed to be in your head.’

‘Hush. I am ashamed to
have you in my head. I do not have time for you right now.’ The fight that they put off earlier was starting up again and Sesshoumaru really did not have time for it.

Much to his youkai’s dismay, though, InuYasha came walking through the trees at that exact moment. InuYasha’s eyebrows shot up at the sight of Kirara.

“Well, I guess…everyone else is…gone.” He said in a troubled voice.

“Yes, it would appear so.” Sesshoumaru replied, his voiced masking his true feelings. He did not care much for the humans, but he did not like to see Hana so upset. How that patch of concern worked its way into his system, he would have to figure out later. Right now, his attention tuned in to what InuYasha said next.

“Hana is back in the clearing; she’s starting to reminisce. She’s just staring vacantly at the sky and has a strange smile on her face. It’s fucking disturbing. Go see if you can snap her out of it.”

Sesshoumaru turned towards the heavens himself and gazed intently. He was not surprised she remembered it. This night was much like the one he and Hana had shared their first kiss. Sesshoumaru, figuring it was to happen eventually, took the initiative. He had kissed her slow and passionately, playing with her soft, velvety lips. They had been sitting on a grassy hill, silently watching the stars twinkle. Hana was resting her head on Sesshoumaru. His arm was around her, his other resting under his head. A shooting star had just passed, and Hana told him to make a wish on it.

“No, you make the wish. I do not need any foolish human object.” He said.

She closed her eyes tightly and clasped her hands. Moments later, she relaxed and resumed her peaceful position on Sesshoumaru.

“What did you wish for?” He asked.

She lifted her big gold eyes to his. “That you would kiss me.”

After that kiss, they had stayed there the rest of the night. He did not regret that night; in fact, it only served to bring them closer.

“Hey bastard, come back to the damn earth.”

Shaken out of his reverie, Sesshoumaru sighed and dropped his shoulders slightly. He started walking back to where Hana was located; noting that InuYasha and the cat demon was following.

“InuYasha, just where is your wench?” Sesshoumaru inquired after a moment of silence.

“None of your fucking business.” He mumbled.

The corners of Sesshoumaru’s lips twitched. “You don’t know yourself, do you?”

The hanyou was obviously annoyed with his questions. “I do know where she is, but it’s none of your fucking business!”

Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes and kept walking. The realization hit him; Hana wasn’t there anymore. He stopped and turned. “Baka, you said that Hana is in the clearing, correct?”

The hanyou in question’s eyes widened at the question. His shoulders drooped. “She’s not there anymore, is she?”

“No.”

“Well, don’t just stand here like an ass, let’s get moving.” InuYasha soared into the trees. Sesshoumaru hastily followed suit.

Upon reaching the clearing, they found that Hana was, indeed, not there. InuYasha and Sesshoumaru followed her trail until they came to her final destination: the Bone Eaters well.

Miroku awoke slowly. He was sitting on something hard, possibly concrete. He could not open his eyes. His wrists were hurting. His memory was fuzzy and he had a hard time remembering what had happened. Miroku heard words exchanged, and voices raising and lowering. The minute he heard ‘prisoners,’ he remembered Sango and Shippou. He forced his eyes open and looked about. Sango was on his right, while Shippou was on his left. He looked up at his throbbing wrists to see them bound in cuffs, as was Sango. Shippou, on the other hand, being too small to fit two cuffs, was bound in one large cuff instead. He hung from the wall, slightly swaying back and forth, his normally perky, bushy tail limp. Miroku’s throat felt like sandpaper. He still miraculously managed to rasp out eligible words.

“Sango,” He ground out. “Are you okay, my dear Sango?”

She moaned in reply.

Miroku decided to try Shippou.

“Shippou, are you awake?” No reply.

A faint laughter came from the shadows by the entryway. A scowl came upon Miroku’s face; he recognized that laugh. Naraku came out of the shadows just enough to light his face.

“So Naraku,” He ground out. “What are you planning to do now?”

Naraku glanced over his shoulder before replying. “A most unexpected thing.” After that, he slithered back into the darkness and down the long corridor.

As soon as InuYasha vanished through the trees, Hana took off towards the village where priestess Kaede dwelled. She wanted to know of the secret of the well. Daybreak was coming soon, so she figured the priestess would be awake soon. She’d heard bits and pieces of it from InuYasha, but she found out the most from the faeries. They are most informative when they want to be…and when you “promise” them your soul. Checking behind herself every moment or so to be sure she was not followed, Hana continued throughout the clearing. A dark object came into view.

‘The well…’

Hana turned her attention away from the mysterious well and continued. She got no more than half past the well when she stopped. Something was dragging her in, like a gravitational pull. Curiosity overwhelming her, she stepped closer towards the strange well. Hana grabbed hold of the edge, leaned over, and looked into the swallowing darkness. Seeing something sparkle, she leaned over a bit farther. Hana, not realizing just how far she had leaned, felt herself tumbling over the edge. She made no sound as she fell into the foreboding shadows of the Bone Eater’s well.

Disgr untled Author’s Note:
Okay! I’m back but only because I figured out how to use a USB port! So, yay me! Anyway, I am so sorry it took me this long just to put up the next chapter. I am not happy with this chapter at all really. I made changes to it, but then my dad decided to buy a new computer and now it’s gone. I still have the old computer, so if I can find a cheap enough monitor I can get the good version. Until then, You will all just have to be happy with this. Please don’t hurt me! Also, in update of this chapter, I have rearranged Hana's outfit. If you are confused by the description, I apologize; I'm terrible at describing things, though I try my best. If you want an idea of what it looks like, refer to Naruto. It's in between Sakura's (the character with the pink hair and the ribbon/head protector for those who don't know) old outfit, and her new one. I'm not trying to steal her outfit, I just like the style. Also, if you know what that top part thingy she wears is called, feel free to tell me. I'm too lazy to look for it myself. ^_^
