Meanwhile farther to the south InuYasha, Sango, Miroku, and Akira were sitting around a fire. Night had fallen and this was their camp for the night. Everyone was silent as the fire flickered before them slowly cooking fish that had been caught earlier. It had been almost a week since InuYasha had seen Kagome. He stared into the fire remembering their last conversation before she had left. Anger still plagued his heart for her leaving him behind.
“I think it is done.” Sango said as she blew on a fish kabob to cool it. “Though it's probably not as tasty without those seasonings Kagome used.” She said absent mindedly.
InuYasha narrowed his eyes at him and stood up. “I don't have much of an appetite anyway.” He said and walked away.
Akira glanced over to Sango and Miroku as they began to eat. “That girl, Kagome, is she InuYasha's mate?”
“Not exactly,” Miroku began to explain. “Though both of them care for one another.”
Sango began explaining before Miroku had a chance to confuse Akira. She told Akira about Kagome and why she was not with them. She then went on to explain about Kikyo, the priestess that was responsible for their conflicted emotions. It was hard for Akira to understand. Why would a demon want a human for a mate anyway? Personally she held nothing against the human race, but they only lived a fraction of the time demons lived. Once Sango had given a short summary of the events everyone again fell silent.
With their stomachs full Sango and Miroku lay down beside the fire to sleep. After they had dozed off Akira crept away from the fire quietly. Moving soundlessly she approached InuYasha who was sitting alone on a large boulder by the stream where they had earlier caught the fish. She could tell his heart was consumed with sadness though she still didn't understand how or why he would have formed such a bond with a human.
“For you to care so much about humans, you sure do try and hide it from those closest to you.” She said.
Caught off guard InuYasha quickly jumped to his feet. “It is a weakness to wear your heart on your sleeve.” He replied.
“You should tell her.” Akira advised.
“Who..What…How do you know?” he asked glaring back toward the campfire.
“If you care for that human girl, you should tell her. Otherwise your heart will be forever tortured.” Akira said.
“It's not that easy.” InuYasha said sitting back down.
“But of coarse not.” She laughed. “You have chosen a human for a mate.”
“Do you have some problem with humans?” he growled.
She walked closer to see better the look in his eyes. “InuYasha you should follow you heart instead of denying it. But I warn you. When you choose a human for a mate, you do understand that the length of their life is but a blink of an eye for those like us.”
InuYasha turned away from her, “You think I don't already know this.” He growled choking back his tears.
Realizing how upset he was Akira began to feel bad for him. “InuYasha I am sorry. I shouldn't have stuck my nose where it doesn't belong.” She turned away from him and started walking back towards the campfire where Miroku and Sango were still sleeping.

It had been two miserable weeks for Kagome without seeing or hearing from InuYasha. He often would haunt her dreams while she slept. She had started to go back to the feudal age the weekend before but already she had tons of homework and test to study for. She had crammed into her schedule every class she would need credit for to graduate without having to go all school year long.
But luckily one of the teachers had been absent from school this week and she was able to do most of her homework in the free class. With a substitute they didn't have as much school work. `If I work really hard tonight maybe I can finish my homework for this weekend and take a day off and visit everyone back in Kiade's village.' She began planning in her mind.
Kagome worked hard late into the night to finish her homework and set her alarm clock for early the next morning. After a quick breakfast with her family she headed off through the well. She had been very worried since InuYasha had not been back to annoy her about coming back. Upon her arrival at Kiade's hut she was greeted by Shippo.
“Kagome!” he yelled jumping into her arms.
Kagome embraced him back. “I've missed you Shippo. I've missed everyone, where are they?” She asked walking into Kiade's hut.
“Kagome,” Kiade said cheerfully. “You're back.”
“Not for long, I can only visit for a couple of days.” She said regretfully.
“I see.” Kiade said in a sad tone. “I am afraid everyone is gone.”
“Oh.” Kagome said sadly. “Where did they go?”
“InuYasha brought a panther demon to Kiade the day after you left. She was badly injured and when she recovered she said she was going to find her sister.” Shippo said still clinging to Kagome.
“A panther demon? So you mean the same one we came across a few weeks ago?” Kagome asked.
“Yeah, that's the one.” Shippo said. “She was attacked by Kagura.”
“And her sister has been here searching for her.” Kiade announced. “She is very powerful I could tell by her aura.”
Kagome sat back taking everything in. “How long do you think they will be gone?” she asked with a longing look at Kiade.
“I am not sure my child. I had hoped they would be back by now.” Kiade replied.
Kagome spent most of her time sitting silently worrying about InuYasha. She knew how upset he was with her for going back like she did, but there was no way to make him understand. Her stomach was in knots, she hated being away from him especially when he had been so upset at her for leaving. For the rest of the evening, that night, and the next day she was tortured hoping he and the others would somehow come back before she left to go back home.
On her last evening there Kiade walked with her to the bone eaters well. Kiade sensed the sadness in her heart. “Do not blame your self child.” She said trying to comfort her. “InuYasha cares for you Kagome, but the two of you are from different worlds and therefore things are going to be difficult. But listen to your heart and everything will work itself out.”
“It's just that…though our hearts grow together, our lives seem to grow apart.” She replied.
Kagome hugged Kiade for her kind words and then hugged Shippo before leaping into the well going back to her own time. Shippo stood teary eyed at the edge of the well watching Kagome disappear. “I wish Kagome could just stay here with us.”
“I know.” Kiade replied picking the demon child up into her arms and making her way back to the village.
Back at home Kagome took a bath and crawled into her bed. She desperately missed InuYasha. The words of Kiade echoed through her head over and over as she lay in her bed trying to go to sleep. `We are from two different worlds. But I love InuYasha. I promised him I would always stand by his side regardless of what happened and here I am back home in my own time worrying about my own problems.' Her tears began to increase.
Her mom had been walking down the hallway when she heard a whimper come from behind Kagome's door. She lightly knocked and eased open the door. “Kagome are you alright?”
Kagome sat up in her bed. “Mom.” She struggled as it was even harder to control her tears.
Her mom rushed to embrace her. “Kagome it's going to be alright.” She said squeezing her tighter. Once Kagome was able to she told her mother why she was crying.
“Kagome,” her mother began. “You have a bond with InuYasha that nothing in this world could ever break. And forever you will be in each others hearts. The choice you have made is just that a choice. There is no right or wrong decision in life, either way you would have consequences to deal with. And deciding to come home to pursue your school work to better your future had to take a lot of your strength, and you need to remember that in times like this.”
Kagome dried her tears as she looked up at her mother. “I miss him so much.”
“Kagome I think there is more reason to what you did than just your school work. You are starting to grow up.” She smiled at her daughter. “Think about that.”
Her mother bid her a goodnight and quietly made her way out of the room as Kagome snuggled back down into her covers.
