InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Story of Two Sisters ❯ A happy ending...??? ( Chapter 22 )
[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
Sango and Miroku decided to head back to Kiade's village. Shippo decided to return with them, he had been hiding while everything was taking place. InuYasha and Kagome said they would catch up later. Mostly because InuYasha wanted to talk to Akira and Kagome wasn't about to leave without knowing what was going on. Sesshoumaru stood patiently by waiting for Elandra to join him on the journey back to Jaken and Rin.
The two sisters stood well out of ear shot talking to one another. Akira quickly explained what had happened with Kagura and that she had seen their father in the other world. It was a lot for the older sister to take in and a long silence fell between them.
“He's disappointed in me isn't he?” Elandra struggled to say through her tears.
“No.” Akira said simply. “Father said that we all have a path to follow. And maybe yours isn't with the panther clan. I know mine isn't.” Akira then looked over to InuYasha.
“Perhaps you are right.” Elandra stared up at Sesshoumaru staring proudly off in the distance.
“All father ever really wanted for us was to be happy.” Akria looked at her sister and her sister returned her eyes to Akira as well.
“I must get going little sister.” Elandra said.
“We should too.” Akria stood staring at her sister and then hugged her.

It was a long awkward walk back to the village for InuYasha, Kagome, and Akria. Neither of them would say what they really wanted to say. As they approached the forest of InuYasha Akira asked if she could talk to Kagome alone. InuYasha didn't want to leave them alone, but he allowed the girls to have some time alone and dashed off to the village to check on Kohaku.
Once InuYasha was out of sight Akira breathed a sigh of relief. Kagome stood anxious to see what the girl had to say. It took a moment for the right words to come to Akira but soon she began to speak.
“I know what is in your heart.” She said simply. “And I know what lies in InuYasha's heart.”
“As do I.” Kagome added.
“I do not want to be the wedge that tears you apart.” Akira said sadly.
“But you aren't.” Kagome replied. Akria stared at her for a moment encouraging her to say more. Kagome sighed lightly and then propped herself against a fallen tree. “His heart had never really been mine, but I have always given mine to him.”
Akira positioned herself along side Kagome against the fallen tree. Kagome continued, “I love InuYasha. I have stood by his side for many years, but I have grown to realize that no matter how much I have longed for us to be together in that way…it is not possible.”
“I don't understand.” Akira replied with a confused look on her face.
“Neither did he at first. Our lives are in different worlds. I am Kagome, though I share my soul with Kikyo. My soul was born into Kikyo in this time because she was the one that was supposed to cross paths with InuYasha, not me. But their time together was interrupted. And when she was brought back to life I feared out time together would be over. But InuYasha didn't develop feelings for me because I was her reincarnation. He had feeling for me because I was Kagome.”
Akira listened attentively, but she didn't understand why Kagome was saying what she was saying unless she wanted Akira to leave. Nevertheless she waited patiently for Kagome to finish.
“A few months ago I realized that what was between us can never be real. I have lead two lives over the past couple of years and now the time has come that I choose which one it is that I am going to live. InuYasha cannot live in my time, in my world. And I…I cannot live in this world and this time.” Tears began to flood Kagome's eyes. “Although at times this has all felt like a dream and sometimes even a nightmare…that's all this will ever really be for me.”
“I'm sorry Kagome.” Akira said feeling sympathetic. “I am trying to understand but I don't.”
Kagome gave a half-hearted smile, “I know.” She paused for a moment and dried her eyes. “What I am trying to say is that InuYasha's heart has suffered enough. And for us to be together would only make things worse for him and me. I want you to know that if you love him as I think you do then you should try to be with him. He deserves happiness, a happiness that I fear I cannot give to him.”
Akira was blown away. Never had she expected such selflessness from Kagome in this matter. “I do love him. But I feared his heart still belonged to you, or even Kikyo.”
Kagome smiled back her, “No, I think his heart has longed for you for quite some time now.”
“Thank you Kagome.” Akira said. “I wanted to talk to you to find out where we stood with each other and without having to press it you told me exactly everything I needed to know.”
The two continued walking to the village. Mostly they talked about InuYasha and some of his more annoying habits and shared short stories about him. It was good for Kagome to have the closure she needed even though it came from the most unlikely place, Akira. Upon arriving at Kiade's hut they found everyone inside and Kohaku had regain consciousness though he still had very little memory.
InuYasha said his good bye to Kagome alone in the forest by the well. He was curious as to what had been said between the two, but he did not ask and Kagome did not offer any information about it. It was a casual good bye, and yet heartfelt. As he returned to the village he found Akira walking alone in one of the herb gardens. He made his way over to her and joined her walking.
“So what do we do now?” Akira asked.
“Well…” InuYasha stopped walking and grabbed her by the arm. Akira looked back at him curiously. He leaned forward and leaned in kissing her deeply. The two embraced each other after the kiss for quite some time. “We just have to take it one day at a time.” He said relieved to have her in his arms again.
