The place still reeked from the 's rotting flesh and blood. Now that he could get a really good close up look, he found blood stains everywhere. Inside the cave were deep hideous claw marks and burn scorches where the larger, more powerful beast had fought for it's life. On the cave's floor there were pit marks where Akanesuji powerful poisons had dripped and splashed, burning into the softer limestone. It had been a very well planned attack and Sesshoumaru understood that it was their teamwork that made them so successful. It was the kind of teamwork built by years of training together and camaraderie. A deep guttural growl escaped his lips, much to his own surprise. He was feeling jealous and possessive, two emotions he had not experienced for many, many years.
The cave system was deep and continually narrowed. It had paths cutting in all directions and he had little idea which one to take. He wondered if she knew either. Getting lost in these caves would hamper her safety. Sniffing deeply, he found that one particular tunnel, going almost straight up, smelled better than the rest. With a leap he got into it with ease. Her human followers would not have it so easy.
The tunnel let out into a darkened room, and Sesshoumaru had to break the iron locks to get out of it. Escaping the series of cellar rooms, dank hallways and carved out niches he discovered he was indeed inside a small castle. It was not near as nice as his, but it was still a fortified estate. When he started encountering all kinds of reptile and monkey demons, he was quick to backtrack out. Alone he could not take them all on. That had been the boar's mistake. He was probably smug thinking himself invulnerable inside his own den, but there was greater strength in numbers.
After dinner Akanesuji and Hizumeha sat on the porch of her house with the higher leaders of the town. They were all sipping sake, getting merry because their demon goddess was back. In her lap was a little boy no older than three, and on both sides of her were twin girls, maybe around Rin's age. She talked with them about the planting season and the local gossip. She announced her marriage to Sesshoumaru and how she was going to be a mother in a decade or two. Everyone cheered and raised their cups. At night fall, everyone said their “good night's” and Akanesuji sat for a while alone watching the skyline, the trees and the town walls with feigned disinterest.
If Sesshoumaru had followed her now, he had done a very good job of hiding himself. She herself felt no reason to hide anything. What ever eye full he was getting was good for him. He needed to understand the woman he had married. Finally standing and rubbing her belly, she turned into her house.
There stood Sesshoumaru, leaning against the back wall with his arms crossed over his chest in the most impatient stance she had ever seen him in. His eyes were hot with anger and his mouth was in a pursed frown.
Akanesuji jumped out of her skin, grabbing the door frame to steady herself. “Why, hello love,” she babbled, straightening herself up quickly. “I didn't expect you to come visit for a few weeks or so.”
“Glad to see me?” he seethed.
“Of course I am...but you don't seem very happy to see me.”
“I want you to stop this folly and go home. You are putting yourself into more danger than you realize.”
“Umm....no.” It was the first direct “no” she had ever given him and it felt good to do it.
“You said you would choose me over everything else.”
“This isn't about choosing you over them.” Akanesuji folded her arms over her chest as well, taking a mirroring stance. “This is about you playing over protective alpha male, but you need to get something straight. I am a kunoichi and this is what I do. By the looks of your outfit, you should completely understand.” She pointed to his oni half mask, dangling by it's ties at his waist.
“I am not shinobi and you know it. Neither are you, or at least, I thought you were something more.”
“Oh that was low Sesshoumaru.” Akanesuji turned her head to the side, biting her bottom lip and snarling her nose up.
“No. Low is what you are doing, lying to me about who you are and what you are doing. You really are the manipulative bitch I thought you were.”
“I never lied to you.”
“You withheld information.”
“Like you don't withhold information? What rock have you been hiding under lately Sesshoumaru? You never asked me about what I was going to do for the summer!”
“You never said, “Hey sweetheart, I think I am going to invade my neighbor...care to join me?”
“Fuck off.”
“What did you just say?”
“I said FUCK OFF FLUFFY!” If the whole village hadn't heard their argument by now, they certainly did then.
Sesshoumaru smacked her across her face, leaving a weltering path of poison burning her skin. “You will go home and you will take care of my son.”
Akanesuji wiped her face with her sleeve, looking down to notice the fabric starting to smolder. Her skin stung greatly, her lip swelling and cracked, bleeding to one corner. Her own poison started to drip from her nose and soon it was so strong that it ran out of the corners of her eyes. She was so hurt, so stunned and so angry that he slapped her, at first she could only stand there. All rational thought was gone, except for the one telling her not to get into a physical fight with him because he would surely win. “I...will...not...go...home...and....I do not...carry...your...son. I carry the grandchild of Inu No Taisho and I will not be smacked across the face like a common whore.”
Sesshoumaru's eyes changed into a blind demonic flurry. With a closed fist he punched at the wall, tearing a hole into it. He yelled at her with the most hateful, guttural scream he had ever heard from himself.
Akanesuji put her hands to her sides and closed her eyes, tilting her chin up to expose her throat. She became the epitome of peace, waiting for the blow to strike. Once again she waited for death by his hand and once again, he would not give it to her. When she opened her eyes, he was gone. Her worst nightmares were coming true. He had turned his back on her and walked away.
His worst nightmares had come true as well. He managed to loose his temper, loose his true love and loose his only son before he had ever gotten to hold him. Damn it all.
