Returning home for the remainder of the winter was all Sesshoumaru could do. Rin would not tolerate the cold well despite having the well made quilted jacket Akanesuji had made her the year before. Hunting her down now was impossible. Wrapped up in Sesshoumaru's arm and furry mantle as well, Rin played her bronze frog whistle as Ah-Un made it a fast trip back home.

Upon arrival, Sesshoumaru set to writing letters. His first was to Akanesuji's mother, not to warn her, but to have word sent to him if her daughter arrived there to visit. He could really care less if the old bitch died, but he did care if Akanesuji showed her face. The second was to Inuyasha, demanding he call upon him as soon as possible. At the end he wrote that he would not try to kill him this time and that his companions were welcome to attend as well.

The third letter was to Akanesuji, though he had no where to send it to. Halfway through it he set it on fire and cussed himself.

The fourth letter was of similar vein. It ended up in ashes too.

Jaken was sent to deliver the letters immediately using Ah-Un to speed things up. Curling Rin into his lap, Sesshoumaru spent the afternoon brooding as she continued to blow the damned frog.

It was really getting on his nerves, but he knew if he took it away from her she would throw an absolute fit.

By dinner time Jaken had not come back home and Sesshoumaru was forced to cook Rin a meal. He screwed up the rice, burned the chicken lightly and totally botched up the vegetables. It was edible, but just barely. For the first time in his life, he found something he totally sucked at. He liked to eat, but he didn't need to do it, at least not very often. There had never been a reason to cook before, and when there was a reason, he just had some servant do it.

Rin tried to get him to eat. She laid out her toy tea set in front of him as he continued to brood. “I don't feel like playing,” he told her, pushing the little bowl away filled with lumpy rice and a sickly looking sliver of chicken.

“But daddy, Jaken is gone and you told me we could be ourselves when no one was around.”

“I'm sorry sweetheart, daddy doesn't feel like playing tonight,” he mumbled, pulling her into his lap and hugging her tight. Her warm smell was comforting.

“You miss mommy don't you?”

“Yes baby. I miss her very much.”

Rin pat his cheek and played with his hair. “Everything will be fine daddy. I just know it will. She'll come back when she gets all big and fat like a toad.”

“Do you really think so?”

“Oh yeah daddy. She's gonna need our help, “ she exclaimed proudly. Clearly she had a job in all of this.

“What did she tell you?”

“Well..she said that her tummy is going to get really really big and she wont be able to touch her own feet. Then her ankles are going to swell up and she won't want to walk. Then she's gonna want to eat everything in sight and go pee all the time.”

“Sounds pretty miserable.”

“Yeah. She said she's gonna whine like a baby.”

“I can't imagine mommy whining.”

“She will daddy. She says everybody whines when they have babies.” She was just so matter of fact about it that Sesshoumaru could believe her. He nodded his head a couple of times in some form of acceptance to what she said. “Come on daddy. Let's play fetch before Jaken gets back.” The little girl tugged on his ear playfully. “It always makes you feel better.”

Sesshoumaru fussed a little, giving Rin a wrinkled nose. She continued to pat his cheek, then started rubbing his ear in a way any canine would approve of.

“Oh....all right,” he gave in. Rin's words had given him a little ray of hope. Maybe as time went by, his love would see how desperately they needed each other and return. By the time Rin got back from her room with the ball, there was a nice sized white dog waiting for her, his tail wagging.
