Rin and Shippo were happy to see that Akanesuji was alone in the barn, curled up in a ball and resting with her nose covered by her tail. Her eyes were open and she appeared happy to see them, her tail wagging back and forth behind her. “And what can I do for you two?”

“Mommy. I want to marry Shippo here.” She pulled him up beside her after dragging him down the hallways, out the front doors of the main building, through the courtyard and up to the barn. He smiled really big to the dog and the dog gave a smirk. He got the distinct impression that she knew this was coming soon.

“Well daughter. Where are his parents to do the arrangements?”

“My parents are dead,” the little kitsune said with a sudden change of demeanor.

“My sincerest apologies. Then I guess all betrothal arrangements you must handle yourself because you are a man now.”

The little kitsune swelled with pride, quickly leaving the sadness behind and becoming his cheerful self again. It made him feel really good that someone, anyone was treating him like an adult, not a little boy. “Yes my lady. I'm who you have to talk to about such things.”

“And you want to marry my daughter?”

“Hai. She likes frogs and coloring and jumping up and down on beds. She'll make a fine wife.”

“I see.”

Rin wrapped her arm around the little kitsune and squeezed him. “What about my grandchildren?” the inuyoukai asked next. “I want lots and lots of grandchildren. Are you prepared to work hard to provide for all those screaming, hungry kits?”

Rin and Shippo looked at each other with a snarl. “We aren't going to have sex. That is so gross...Mother,” she said putting a hand on her hip.

“But that is what married people do Rin. They get married so they can be together always and make babies. Surely you have thought of that.”

“I don't want babies. I want to spend my summers on trips with daddy. Daddy won't let screaming babies go on trips with him.”

“Then I guess you need to reconsider marriage.”

“No! I want Shippo! He's my kitsune and I want to take him on trips with daddy.” The little girl stomped her foot down and put her hands on her hips. She wasn't going to budge on this one.

The dog scowled. “Hum.....” she said, scratching her head with her paw like like a human would. “I will cut the two of you a deal. I will start sewing your wedding furisode, and in three years when it is done, we can start negotiations then. Until then, you will not do anything to piss off your father.”

“I don't care what father thinks.”

“You better care what father thinks. Shippo will have to negotiate with him, not me. If your father thinks one hair on that kitsune's head is dishonorable, he won't agree to anything and he will marry you off to some one from the Cat clan to broker peace.”

“He wouldn't do that. He loves me.”

“And he loves peace even more. War is work, and you know how father loves his peace and quiet.”

Rin put her fingers to her chin. She had to think hard on this one. Mother's proposition was not unreasonable to her child like mind. Three years was a long ways away, but it would take that amount of time to get the furisode she always wanted finished. The embroidery alone would take two years. “Will you help talk daddy into it?”

“No promises there.”

“But I want Shippo.”

“Then the two of you better start trying to impress Sesshoumaru. He will not listen to my words, but he will listen to your deeds. You will have to be the one to convince him. You will have to become the epitome of grace and charm in court. You will have to observe all custom and protocol. You will have to take a chaperon while in the company of men and preserve your virginity. Dignity will be your new mantra.”

“I don't want to be a lady. I want to be a demon slayer just like you.”

“Do I slay demons every day? Nooooooo. What do I do Rin when I am not slaying demons?”

Rin frowned. She knew the answer by rote. “You are Conquerer of the Southern Buffer Lands, first wife to the Great Inuyoukai Sesshoumaru and Lady of the Western State,” she said in a dull voice.

“Good answer. Now, who are you Rin?”

Rin rolled her eyes. She knew this one by rote as well. “I am Rin, ward of the Great Inuyoukai Sesshoumaru and adopted daughter of Akanesuji, first wife and Conquerer of the Southern Buffer Lands.” It too was said in a dull, disinterested voice.

“You are a lady wither you like it or not. Sesshoumaru and I have given you a charmed life though we probably shouldn't have. You should have already been forced a chaperon by now, your feet bound so they would stay small. You should have been forced to your studies because your koto playing is poor and your grasp of tea ceremony is lacking. I should have already introduced you to the other Cardinal courts and arranged a loveless marriage for you.”

Rin was smart. Probably too smart for her own good. “Wait a minute Mother. If I'm your adopted daughter, doesn't that mean I inherit your lands?”

“Your husband will, should he outlast my immortal self.”

“What about Hezumeha?”

“Would you like me to arrange your marriage to him? You would be wife number five and have to please the mares sexually as well as him.” Akanesuji knew she would balk at that one.

Rin gave her the dirtiest look. “That is even grosser than sex with Shippo.”

“Well, you brought it up. He is a servant, though I would be happy to have him as a son in law.”

“Shippo would make a nice son in law.”

“You have three years to prove it to me. I will discuss this no further until then. The two of you are dismissed.” Akanesuji stiffened her neck to a more regal air and tilted her nose. She looked frozen out the door and waited for them to leave.

Rin turned without even a small bow and went to grab the kitsune but paused when her and was about an inch from his skin. She contorted her face and grit her teeth, dropping her hand to her side. “Come on Shippo. You will have to walk a pace behind me.” Shippo shrugged. He didn't care. He could watch her butt that way.

When she got to the door she saw her father walking towards them, cold and bitter like the wind, his hair floating supernaturally. “Back in there, children,” he said with the most bitter vile the girl had ever heard. They backed up quickly, never turning around, thier faces glued to Sesshoumaru's eyes, burning like hot coals.

“What is the meaning of this?” Akanesuji asked when the three figures appeared before her, Rin and Shippo almost falling back against her for help and her husband's lip snarling up uncharacteristically.

“This little whore slept with Shippo in your bed last night.”

“She what?” Akanesuji's voice was full of shock and surprise.

“You heard me. This morning your bed was a mess and it reeked of this kitsune and our daughter. He has disgraced her and I will kill them.”

“No daddy!” Rin screamed. “We didn't do anything I swear!”

“Sesshoumaru, let me check her,” Akanesuji interjected. “If he has taken her, then we can deal with it.”

“No!” the little girl cried. “We didn't do anything! I swear!” She ran into her mother's chest and grabbed onto the hair for dear life. Shippo ran behind her mother, trying to hide as well. Sesshoumaru grabbed her up by the back collar of her kimono and forced her to the ground. With the Moko-moko-sama he nearly choked her while with his single hand he ripped her kimono open. He pushed her flailing legs down and weighted them with his legs while his wife protested, trying to pull him off of her.

When he was satisfied that his little girl was untouched below by sniffing her through her last layer of undergarments he stood and straightened his clothes. Rin ran into her mother's chest and the dog crossed her legs and paws over her, nuzzling her with her chin. “Shippo,” he said with utter disdain, waiting for the boy to come before him.

The kitsune swallowed hard and edged his way around Akanesuji's furry rear end, only stopping when he could see the daiyoukai clearly enough while still in the protective and comforting grasp of her fur. “Hai?” he asked weakly.

“You will never, ever set yourself within ten feet of my ward again. You will never find yourself alone with her. You will bow before her as a princess and respect her as such. And if I ever, smell your vile slobber on her lips again, I will rape your little kitsune ass and with much pain before I kill you.”

Shippo nodded and ducked away, glad that he walked away with his life. This time.

Rin on the other hand escaped her mother's grasp and ran for her father, fists balled up and blazing. She violently beat at him though it did not hurt him at all, her screams of anger and frustration carrying through the barn. He looked down impassively and put his hand around her little neck and began to squeeze, just enough to get her attention.

When she felt her face turning red, she relaxed and dropped her arms. She leaned her head back and looked up at him, staring him in the eyes to say “do it.” If she couldn't get what she wanted, she would rather die.

Sesshoumaru pushed her hard away until she fell back on her butt. “You are as bad as your mother.”

“I hate you,” she spat, wiping her face with her sleeve. “You force me to be alone all the time. You take away my only friend. I hate you, you stupid dog. Kill me!”

He turned away from her and started to walk away, but the spunky Rin only hopped up and run after him again. “I wish you had never saved me. I was better off dead. I hate you! I hate you.” She beat on his back with her fists and Shippo ran up behind her, grabbing at her to pull her away.

“Stop it Rin. Stop.” the little boy cried out, pulling at her kimono and obi. “It's o.k.!”

“I hate you!” was all Rin could repeat over and over again as her fists began to hurt. “I hate you, you stupid dog!”

Sesshoumaru stopped walking and turned back around to face her. He slapped her with a backhanded stroke, making her fall back onto the kitsune. “Remember your place,” was all he said as left the barn.

He had never struck her so before. Always when he disciplined her before, it had been with a paddling over his knee. This stung her more deeply, more soulfully. She wiped the blood from her lip and continued to yell at him from her position on the ground over Shippo's body. “I hate you, you stupid ass dog! I will never play fetch with you again! I hate you! You're a stupid son of a bitch!”

Akanesuji had never heard Rin talk like that. It shocked her as much as it hurt her feelings for the girl. She was even more shocked when Rin grabbed up the kitsune and held his hand, dusting him off and kissing him on the lips like she meant it. “Father will not stand in my way!” she declared to him after their lips parted and his eyes were glazed over. She went over to her mother and kissed her on the nose too. “Three years mommy. Three years. I want my furisode blue. I will not wear that dog's household colors.”

“But mine are red and white too.”

“No. I want blue. A pretty sky blue like when I ride Ah-Un. I want sky blue with white clouds and double headed dragons. I want to be free.”

“You have thought about this for some time then?”

The little girl nodded. “I will be free,” she told her while petting the end of her nose. “Come Shippo, we have much to do.”

By the Kami she sounded so much like her father to Akanesuji. How she had grow in his shadow, becoming tough as nails like him, determined, set in her ways. A regular Moody Bitch. She ordered others with ease, arched her eye brow just like him, acted imperious. How she loved her daughter, admired her spirit, glad that she and Sesshoumaru had not broken it down over the years or forced her to conform like she and he had as children. Rin would grow to be a force to be reckoned with, a hot headed temper like her uncle InuYasha combined with the grace and charm of own self. Akanesuji sighed, knowing that the next ten years were going to be hormonal hell. She hoped that when the girl hit her twenties, she would finally settle into an absolute treasure.

As for poor Shippo, in three years when she was ready for marriage, she would not find her kitsune so alluring. She would break his heart in two. She would be fifteen or sixteen, her exact age unknown because the girl couldn't remember how old she was when Sesshoumaru found her. The girl would want a man, someone who stood her own height, someone who could embrace her and sweep her off her feet. She would want a man who could best her at horse riding, tolerate her cooking, actually match her at board games. The girl was brilliant at Go after playing against her father for the last year.

Finding that man would be very difficult. But that man certainly would not be Shippo. Akanesuji would have to find a nice young youkai more suitable for him.

She had just the plan.
