“I'm not going outside with you,” Akanesuji protested. Sesshou was holding one hand and caressing her back with the other, sweet talking her body as best he could.
“I promise not to talk about anything from the past. I swear, it will be fine.”
“No,” she said, pulling one arm off him than the other. “As much as I love you, we just can't do this.”
Sesshou crossed his arms over his chest and gave her an imperious look like no other. “I order you to come out with me as Lord of the Western Land.”
Akanesuji jutted out her chin and took a similar pose. “That is not fair. We're talking about history here, not your whims.”
“I set you free once, but then married you. I am your husband and you will submit.”
Kagome stood up then. “Sesshoumaru, this is modern Japan not the Western Provence! You can't pull that now!”
“He can't?” Akanesuji turned and asked her. She looked almost horrified. What had happened to the order of things? Were nobles not noble anymore?
“No. He can't. And he knows it.”
“Dammit Kagome, this was none of your business.” Sesshoumaru started tapping his foot.
Kagome took a mirroring stance, and now the whole room was filled with figures hotly tapping their foot, arms crossed and defiant. “Get out of my house.”
“Kagome!” Mrs. Higurashi gasp.
“Modern protocol. Guests have to leave when their hosts ask them to,” she said, pulling out the imaginary rule book of manners.
Sesshoumaru sighed and frowned. Clearly she had him there. It wasn't like it used to be when a guest was guaranteed a meal and a bed for a single night. “If she steps one foot outside this door, I will be watching. I won't hesitate to claim my wife,” he said. With strong arms and hands he embraced her again, planted deep smoldering kisses on her and said his farewells, closing the door behind him.
OooOOOOoooo
“Did you tell her not to step foot outside the house?” Akane said to Sesshou from the dark confines of the car parked outside Mrs. Higurashi's house. He nodded and smiled. “You didn't profess your love to me all mushy and sweet again did you?” He shook his head no. “Good. You know I was such a sucker back then.”
“You're a sucker now.”
“You know I blame the well for us getting back together. We can't have any more major changes in the time line.”
He just nodded and smiled. Lying like a pro. He put his arm around Akane's neck and leaned out of his seat and started nibbling on her. “God, seeing you like that made me so horny. Come here.”
She giggled and grabbed the seat release, pushing the seat back and leaning into it so that she was laying down. Busy hands pushed at her clothes, his fingers unbuttoning the top of her jeans and finding the patch of white fluff. “What was it? The kimono? The hair?”
“You were so big and round. You were absolutely glowing.”
“Just wait, I'll be there again.”
“I know.”
ooooOOOOooooo
Kagome and Akanesuji went up to the girl's room and opened the curtains to look outside. “Is he gone?”
“No. He's still out there. He's in that car, watching for you.”
“Why is it shaking?”
“He's fucking someone.”
“It better be me,” Akanesuji asked, pulling up a chair so she could watch the dark and shiny black box bounce around on the street. When the door finally opened and a woman with short black hair got out. She recognized her future self immediately and smiled. Akane waved up from the street and Akanesuji waved back, smiling big.
“It's so romantic,” Kagome sighed. “A real happy ending.”
“Speaking of happy endings. What are we going to do about you?”
“What do you mean?”
“Are you sure you want to leave all this and come back to the estate?” Akanesuji pointed to the bathroom and hot water and electricity demons. “InuYasha can't provide you with these things, and you will have to submit to the order of things. It's not what you called modern Japan.”
“I love him Akanesuji, and I want to be with him. And besides, he already knows I don't submit.”
“You don't?” The dog demon raised both eyebrows and tilted her head. That was certainly something new. She was learning all kinds of things about “modern” girls and “modern” times.
“No. He wears the beads of subjugation. Not me.”
“Those black beads?” Kagome nodded. “Where do I get a set?” Akanesuji leaned in and whispered to her, as if Sesshoumaru could hear.
“I can make them for you,” the girl whispered back.
The rest of the evening, they were almost like two sisters giggling in Kagome's room. She had turned on her television set and put in an anime called “Love Hina” in which one simpering boy lived with a bunch of really modern girls and Akanesuji sat glued to it eating something called popcorn. Kagome had her put on a really large t-shirt and a set of sweats and they painted their nails together. When they were done with her handy work, Akanesuji looked out the window again and waived to Sesshou, who sat on his car hood and waved back.
Kagome made her sit on the floor and took all of the combs out of her hair, and for the next several hours she braided her hair into something called “French braids”. The dog really liked them, seeing their practicality. The floor was scattered with bridal magazines. She had proudly collected them every spring for the last four years and Akanesuji realized that some things would never change. Girls always dreamed of their big day and prepared for it even when they didn't even have a husband picked out.
In the morning Kagome left for school, leaving the demon to spend the day with her mother. They walked around the temple grounds, but never outside the gate. Mrs. Higurashi loaned her a loose sun dress that stretched over her full stomach. Manatsu still didn't want to shrink, but at least this size was tolerable for her. With her arms around her baby belly, she could feel his kick and squirm and she would rub it as they walked. It was strange to wear clothes that didn't cover her legs, but at the same time it was freeing. It was even stranger having no tabi socks on, but bare feet in thin flimsy sandals.
Sesshou sat on the wall and watched, his wife occasionally looking up and smiling at him. They would wave to each other and smile as she and Kagome's mother made all the arrangements for the wedding. There would have to be two. One in the past, and one here. It was agreed that no guests would come from the past for the modern one. This situation with her here was awkward enough. She gave her a list of names to give Sesshou later, demons who might still be around who might want to attend. Her cousin Koga, Ayame, all of her younger sisters, the rest of the inu clan, Jaken, Hezumeha and his wives, the tanuki chamberlain Sakan, Shippo and Manatsu, and of course herself. When the poor human became concerned about feeding everyone at the reception, Akanesuji pointed over to Sesshou. “Put it all on his tab. I say so.”
oooOOOOoooo
Kagome was having a weird day at school. Hojo was following her around a lot.
Not just the usually running into, but he seemed to be everywhere. His light brown hair seemed to crop up every time she turned around, his eyes watching her intently. She wondered if he somehow knew she was getting married and wanted to talk her out of it.
It wasn't until school was over that she would find out. Dreading him running into her, she grabbed her things and tried to make a run for it.
When she ran into his body around a corner, she screamed and dropped her books. “Gosh Kagome, are you o.k.?”
“Yeah Hojo. I'm o.k.”
“Are you sure? 'Cause you have been gone a lot lately.” His eyes looked concerned as he tried to help pick up her books.
“Um..yeah. Um...I gotta tell you something.” Kagome nervously rubbed the back of her neck. She had to let him down easy. This was getting too annoying.
Hojo stuck his hands in his pockets after giving her all of her books back. He looked expectantly like she was going to give him some good news.
“I'm engaged. To be married,” she blurted out. “I can't see you anymore.”
Hojo just smiled. “Congratulations!” he said. “I hope the lucky guy knows what kind of cool girl he's getting.”
Kagome felt relief and shock at the same time. “You're not disappointed? I mean...I thought you liked me?”
“I do Kagome-chan. But...just not like you think.” Hojo kicked at the ground and ran his fingers though his hair. He had some confessions of his own, but he didn't know if he should spill the beans. “I hope we can still be good friends. I'd really like to keep spending time with you.”
“Well, I don't see why not. Would you like to come to the wedding?”
“Um. I shouldn't go. In fact, I really shouldn't see InuYasha at all.”
Kagome knitted her eyebrows together. Something just wasn't right. How did he know InuYasha? She had never told him about the dog demon. In fact, she had tried really hard to keep them separated when InuYasha came here. She knew the inu would throw a fit and say something stupid, or worse, try to beat the boy up.
Hojo put his hand over his mouth. He knew then he had said too much. “I gotta go. I'll see you later. Hey, don't forget to eat that last batch of herbs I gave you. They will help you with your skin rash problem!”
“Shippo?” she whispered. It was just a hunch as the boy was running away. His brown almost ginger hair looked about the right color and after seeing how Sesshou and Akane had changed, it might just be possible.
The boy slid in his tracks. He'd heard his name fall off her lips. She knew now. She knew. There was no point in running. He turned back and smiled really big, shrugging his shoulders and looking all the world like the precocious boy he used to once be.
“Oh Shippo!” she cried and ran into his arms, hugging him tight as he swung her around. “Why didn't you tell me it was you all this time?”
“I wasn't supposed to Kagome, though God I wanted to. I was ordered not too. I'm only supposed to guard you when you're here at school.”
“Guard me?”
“Yeah. And Manatsu too. He's here too.” He set her down and hugged her tight. “God it's so good to hug you.”
“You've changed...so much. Just look at you.”
“Yeah. I'm pretty handsome aren't I?”
“Well, not like InuYasha.” Kagome blushed on speaking his name. “Where is your tail?”
“It's in my pants,” he whispered. “I have to shave it to get it in there, and damn is it uncomfortable.” He adjusted the front of his pants, hinting that it was curled up between his legs and adding to the large bulge in the front.
“Oh Shippo!”
“How's Rin?” he asked, kicking at the floor and thrusting his hands deep in his pockets.
“She's good. You guys are at Kaede's right now.” She looked up at his face and there was a certain sadness to it. “You miss her don't you?”
“Yeah. She grew up on me, and then poof! She was gone. I can still feel her kisses.”
“You guys got married?”
“No.” He shuffled his feet some more. “We didn't get together until after her human husband died. By that time I was taller. 'course...she was older...and more experienced.” He was all teeth, a very mouthy kitsune grin.
“Shippo!” Kagome hit him in the arm, the sudden realization coming over her that just twenty minutes ago he was that “guy who had a crush on her” and now he was like a best friend. “Hey? You wanna come to dinner at my house? Akanesuji's here and I'm sure she'd like to see you.”
“That would be really cool, but I shouldn't. We gotta keep her in the dark as much as possible Kagome. The less she knows about the future, the better.”
“Is that why Sesshou keeps guarding the house?”
Shippo laughed. A good belly laugh too. “Oh Gods Kagome. The last couple of years have been so funny to watch. He's not there just to keep her from learning about the future. He's there to make her fall so in love with him that she won't go on trips overseas anymore.”
“What's overseas?”
“Oh shit. I've said too much again.” Shippo pushed up close to her so that his face is only about a foot from hers. “See what I mean. I really shouldn't be around her at all.”
“Tell me about overseas!” she demanded, grabbing up his hands and pulling them to her. “What's overseas?”
“Her sex toys.”
“You're kidding?!” she whispered, looking around as if anyone could hear.
“Think about it Kagome. She's seven hundred years old now. She's seen and done it all. We all have.”
“What about Sesshoumaru?”
“What about him?”
“He's actually sharing her with someone?”
“Oh yeah. He ain't got much choice. She took to the modern world by storm. That's one reason why she shouldn't be let out of the house. She already learned too much.”
“This is soooo confusing.” She didn't have the heart to tell him that she had been letting Akanesuji watch television and movies....movies that showed strong, powerful women who would not submit.
“Oh yeah. Tell me about confusion. You should see our family reunions. Akane, Sess, Hez and Yasha, Manatsu, me, all of the mares, their kids, Koga and his whole pack, Sesshou's mom and his other kids and their families, Yasha's kids and their families, Akane's sisters and their families...oh and Jaken and his husband.”
“Jaken's gay?”
“That toad? He's a cross dresser.”
“You know what? I don't want to hear anymore. This is hurting my head.” Kagome pressed on her temple and rolled her eyes. Then she remembered hearing InuYasha's name and she just had to know more about that. “How is InuYasha?”
“Fine.”
“What happens? I mean...I go in the past and I grow old and die right?”
“Um...yeah.” Shippo started that nervous kicking at the floor again, and she knew he wasn't telling the whole truth.
“That's not what happens?” she asks, squeezing his hands tighter.
“Look Kagome. Don't ask me, please. I shouldn't change the future and the past. All I can say is that things turn out fantastic, O.k.?”
“They do?”
“Yeah. Everything turns out great. The weddings go off without a hitch. You kill Naraku. The jewel is made whole eventually. Things turn out great.”
“Alright. I won't ask again. Thanks for telling me as much as you did. It does my heart glad to know things go well.” She leaned up and kissed him on the cheek. “Thank you so much Shippo. I guess happy endings do happen.”
Shippo hugged her one more time. He didn't have the heart to tell her that there really were no happy endings when you were near immortal. Time just dragged on and on. No endings at all. “I'll see you tomorrow o.k.? Manatsu and I are going out on a double date tonight and I gotta get ready.”
“Who are you seeing? I thought you liked me?” Kagome swung her body back and forth like a little girl.
“You wouldn't know her, Kag. She's...older.”
“When you mean old...you mean like what? Twenty two...twenty three?” She shook her finger around as she spoke, talking with her hands.
He rubbed the back of his head nervously, hoping she wouldn't have a cow. “Um...she's older than Sess.”
“Oh. Never mind.” Kagome blushed and backed away in a goofy manner, holding her school books tight up against her chest. She waved and he waved and turning away, they parted.
Yes, knowing youkai was confusing, but she didn't want it any other way.
