His lordship sat in the main hall waiting.
Dinner was supposed to be served with the setting of the sun.
So far, only Sango was there, sitting on her shins in that beautiful kimono he had given her so many moons ago. Her hair was scooped up and lifted into a high chignon, a gold and red coral comb locking it in place.
He watched her from the corner of his eye as she grew impatient and her stomach growled. The rice she had eaten earlier did not fill her. Growing impatient too, Sesshoumaru motioned for Jaken to start presenting the personal tables and trays of food.
The place reeked of sex and he questioned how humans could not smell it. He knew where everyone was, and it wasn't here attending him in court.
Akanesuji and Kuza he could excuse, but InuYasha and his miko bride he could not. He wanted to watch him squirm under his thumb. Wanted to know if the miko had discovered that he was already a marked man. He wanted one last chance to poke a stick at Hizumeha, the horse being separated once again from his favorite prize. Rin he knew would not show. He had already dismissed her into oblivion. The kitsune he wanted to see shiver before him in fear. The monk he could care less about. He had never done anything improper. In fact, of the group, the monk was often the most eloquent and compliant.
Then there was Sango. His little demon slayer. Of the companions who had recently traveled with him, she was the most interesting. A weak human yes, but strong in her spirit and convictions. She was much like his wife, a feisty and mean spirited thing on the battle field, but her temperament was much more subtle and demure. She was humble when Akanesuji was not. He had grown to appreciate her a lot.
“Lady Sango,” he began, sampling the broiled eel before him. “Have you decided to stay with us here?”
She raised her head slowly, her eye lids opening just as calmly. “I have decided to stay where ever Kagome and InuYasha are. I will not break up our team. We still have so much left to do.”
“You do not care to follow the monk?”
“I do not know where the monk goes, my Lord.” Sango cast her eyes away from him.
“Do you love him?”
“No my lord. I find my thoughts today wandering to others.”
“And who are these others?” he asked, wondering if his kiss on her lips had made her think now of him.
“There is one. You probably do not know him. He is a warrior who lives far away. Fast like the wind.”
He was fast like the wind. He could take a bank of clouds, or a ball of light. Sesshoumaru had to know more. “Tell me about him. Is he honorable?” he asked, his curiosity peaked.
“Yes, my Lord. He fights bravely. Cares for his own.” Sango stared at the wall ahead of her then looked to her plate. Taking her chopsticks she took a rice ball and stared at it before her.
“And does he know you think of him?”
“No my lord. Not yet. Though I am sure in the spring I shall see him.”
“You speak of more? Whom else do you think of?”
“There is another. A lord.”
“Yes?”
“I rejected him once, but I have thought to see him again. View him without Housi-sama clouding my eyes.”
Sesshoumaru was clearly perplexed now. These two men could easily be fantasies of him. He opened his mouth to speak but closed it again when the very person they had been talking of entered the doorway, bowed low and took a place next to Sango.
“Greetings, my Lord Sesshoumaru, Sango,” Miroku said, looking over to her and watching her face carefully. She only smiled at him pleasantly and nodded her head in greeting. “I am sorry I am late. What have I missed?”
“Lady Sango was telling me her plans for next spring's adventures.”
“Oh?” Miroku said, not skipping a single beat. “And what are those plans Sango?” he looked to her hopefully.
“You know how things go, Houshi. We travel where ever the shards are.”
“I see.” That didn't answer a thing at all. “Do those plans include marriage?” She shook her head no and with that he knew she was gone. But was she gone for good?
“And what plans do you have, monk?” Sesshoumaru asked, making conversation and watching the interplay between the two former love birds.
“InuYasha and Kagome want me to stay in the group. I may travel over the winter, but I'll be back in the spring to join everyone,” he answered easily, thinking that she just needed more space. More time. He would claim her when he came back.
But everyone knew what “travel” meant. He would go with Hizumeha and the mares in the morning. Sango was not surprised, but Miroku was at her reaction. Her nonchalant manner told him that she didn't care. She didn't care! She always used to care. Now she seemed indifferent and unconcerned. He had grown accustomed to her always being there, waiting. He could take advantage of her steadfast heart no longer.
That hurt him more than anything. Now he was just another person. A guy. A friend.
“Sounds interesting,” the inuyoukai said, pulling a cup of saki to his lips. “North I take it?” The monk nodded. “Good. You can make sure my little daughter gets herself settled into the shinobi orphanage.”
“Why are you sending her there?” Sango asked. Sesshoumaru expected someone, sometime in the evening to ask this question and he had already prepared a good, non-offensive answer.
“I feel it's time she walked amongst her own kind. Here she has no friends. No humans to learn from. Rin needs more than what I can offer her here.” The two humans nodded, satisfied at what he said. Indeed, it would be good for Rin to be around her own kind, and Akanesuji's land was at least safe and secure. She would not see war or strife. Hizumeha kept the territory peaceful.
InuYasha and Kagome trailed in next, both flushed and a little disheveled. Sesshoumaru could tell by the look of his clothes that he hadn't taken them off during their last foray. What an idiot. He was covered in wrinkles. They bowed and took their places, apologizing much and offering little in the way of excuse. Everyone just muttered and nodded, smirking and thinking it rather funny. Everyone thought it funny but his lordship. “Do you find your tardiness amusing?” he asked lowly after they were seated and Jaken had brought them their servings.
“No my lord,” InuYasha said, bowing again a second time.
“Here,” he said, standing and pointing to the floor. “You come sit here and hold court. You sit here for an hour waiting for your subjects.”
“But I...”
“NOW!”
InuYasha stood and obeyed, sitting in Sesshoumaru's place over the room. Everyone closed their mouth up tight and didn't say a word. Gracefully Sesshoumaru took his place next to Kagome and picked at his food. “Let's see how you enjoy having excuses thrown at your feet.” Lifting the sake cup, he toasted his brother and downed it, smacking it hard and prompting Jaken to scurry close to fill it.
The room ate quietly. That was, quietly until Shippo and Kirara tootled in next. “Hey InuYasha! What game is this?” Shippo said, carrying his pussy over his left arm and pointing at the red robed man with a large white fur. “Are we playing charades?”
“Sit down Shippo,” the lordly InuYasha said. “My brother put me up here.”
Shippo looked over to Kagome and was horrified when he saw Sesshoumaru sitting next to her lazily, his weight on a hip and elbow as he sipped from a cup. “Nice of you to join us, little man. I see you brought a date with you.”
The kitsune pulled his cat tighter to him and took a place far, far away from his lordship with a “gaahh”. Everyone was looking at him funny, even the humans. InuYasha's nose twitched and his eyes expanded in sudden knowledge. The fox had done the cat. Ewww.... He rubbed his eyes. There were just some things he didn't need to know. Frowning, Shippo sat the cat next to him and she let out a big warning growl at Sesshoumaru. It started low in her throat and ended in a high pitched tone.
Sango jumped back, as did Miroku. They had never seen her act such a way. “What's her problem?” Miroku asked the slayer. Sesshoumaru laughed. “Oh...she makes a much better girlfriend for him than Rin.”
Shippo would not have his new girl insulted. Pulling out a leaf he put it on her head and let his magic fly, transforming her. Kirara appeared on her shins, giant breasts bobbing and an evil grin on her face as she picked up her little kitsune and put him in her lap. Her two big boobs sat over his ears and he gave a mouthy grin of teeth. “She sure does,” he said.
Miroku leaned forward in sudden appreciation. Sango smacked him over the head making him fall forward into his bowls of food. Sesshoumaru caught himself speechless for once in his life. InuYasha had a sudden watering in his mouth, his hands grabbing the fur of his fancy new mantle hard and Kagome screamed, the realization that her little boy had been boinking the cat.
Sesshoumaru blinked his eyes and pulled himself together. “Impressive.”
“Thank you,” he said, proud of his skill.
“Not you. The neko. Nice tits.” He lifted his cup and saluted them.
The cat just snickered, giving him a wink. Sesshoumaru got the distinct impression she was thinking about their night in the barn, her nose pressing against his ass. She knew everything about Yasha. He would not say another foul word to the kitsune. EVER.
Hizumeha walked in and did a double take when he saw the hot blond naked an on her knees. “Sweet Mother of us all!” His wives gave him the finger again behind his back and the rest of the room let out a collective laugh.
The horse did not like that the joke was somehow on him. Looking over to Miroku, apparently he hadn't fared too well either. He was covered in duck sauce and grains of rice, a piece of fish laying on his collar. He pointed to the monk's robes and Miroku looked down, peeling the fish off. Sitting down across from the others, he ran his fingers down his long braid and flicked it over his shoulder. The girls all smiled at the monk.
Kirara poofed back to her normal size, the leaf dropping to the ground. This time she ignored it and curled up next to her little friend. When Jaken brought Shippo's meal, the little kitsune demanded another one for her. She purred and purred. He treated her like a person and not a pet. It felt really good.
Sesshoumaru knew his plans for the evening were lost. There wasn't any more he could do, not with everyone jovial. The mood was broken and he would not be able to regain it without some serious consideration. Drinking down his fifth sake so far, he stood and started to excuse himself.
It was Rin's appearance that made him change his mind. Going to the back table, he stole the large sake gourd and returned to his seat. It was time to watch another show.
Rin looked to him and then up to the dias where her uncle sat. Raising an eyebrow, she saw all kinds of possibilities. She strode up to the platform and acted as though nothing had ever changed. With grace she took her traditional place, the spot next to his lordship.
Jaken looked to Sesshoumaru for permission, and nodding his head, the frog was allowed to serve her. The girl lifted her chin, gave out that snobbish look she had mirrored off her father and began to eat.
“Oji-chan (uncle)” she said in utmost respect as a greeting.
“Mei-chan (niece)” he replied.
“Would you be so kind as to send baka inu-Chichi (father) away? I do not wish to eat in his presence.”
“No, Mei-chan.”
“Would you be so kind as to cut off his other arm?”
“No, Mei-chan.”
“How about kick his ass then?” InuYasha shook his no.
“Then what good are you up here? You are just his puppet.”
InuYasha grabbed her up by her collar and pulled her close to him. “If you hadn't noticed, Mei-chan, this is a pack and we all have a place in it. Don't forget your place.” His voice was steady but commanding, that deep dark sound that Kagome had heard before. Sesshoumaru visibly flinched. It sounded so much like father.
“You will eat there,” InuYasha said, pointing to the back corner of the room. Rin grabbed up her tray and meekly took it to the back. She was now lowest in line and rank. “Kagome.” he ordered, pointing to the spot next to him. The girl nervously took up her things and sat where Rin had been. When she settled, he took a clawed finger and lifted her chin to him. “Ladyship looks good on you,” he said before taking her in a kiss. Kagome melted, his voice ringing through her.
Sesshoumaru stood. He would not try to take him off the dias now, not since he was the fool who had put him there. Rin had been duly quieted and shamed and Hizumeha made a fool of. At least two things had been accomplished. “Enjoy yourselves.” he said blandly. “I must attend my son.” He then nodded to his brother. “Yasha.”
The hanyou suddenly felt less assure, his brother calling him demoness in front of everyone. His shoulders slumped and he bowed low before his brother.
Sesshoumaru felt like a total stupid idiot again. Yasha had shown dominance with nobility. He had not challenged him directly, making it clear that he was part of the hierarchy and not above it, but there was something bone chilling about the tone of his voice, the way he sat upright, the flash of color in his yellow eyes. He began to doubt his decision to give him the moko-fluff. Instead of driving him slowly mad, it seemed to be giving him strength instead.
He walked down the halls irritated and wanting to punch something.
