Chapter Two
"Momma?" Kagome's voice was full of question as she looked at her mother.
"Yes sweetie?" Sakura turned to face her daughter and saw the ever burning curiosity in her daughter's eyes. Something else was there in the depths of her rare blue eyes, determination. Smiling, Sakura motioned her daughter to sit at the table and placed a cup of tea in front of her. "Now I'm guessing that you have more questions for me, Mido-san most likely told you a little about YuJie." With Kagome's nod, Sakura sighed and looked her daughter straight in the eyes.
"You know YuJie did what she had to in order to protect you and the Shikon?"
"Yes momma, but how did she pass?" Sakura gave a sad smile as she remembered the woman who had sacrificed her power to help their family survive.
"My dear, YuJie was recovering from the loss of her family when she happened upon us. Her husband and daughter had died in a car crash from a drunk driver. To make matters worse she found out shortly after their deaths that she had cancer." Taking a deep breath, Sakura readied herself for the rest of the story.
Kagome began to remember what happened as her mother continued on with the story.
~*~*POV Memory*~*~
Kagome and Souta were playing in a sand box together when three older boys came over and started picking on the little four year old Souta. Kagome was furious; no one picked on her baby brother and got away with it!
"Leave him alone!" She shouted and pushed one of the three away. Another one pushed her back in the sand box and laughed saying,
"You're nothing but a baby; you need your big sister to protect you!"
Kagome felt her rage swell, out of the corner of her eye she saw her parents running to them; only to stop and stare. When Kagome went after the boys she felt her body grow heavy, and watched as the boys and Souta fall asleep. Afraid something else might harm Souta, she felt her powers spike again. She suddenly collapsed. The warm aura of a miko surrounded making her feel safe. She really didn't understand why, but just knew that she was.
~*~*~
"When you wouldn't wake, we panicked. YuJie ran to us, but I wouldn't let her near until she gave me her word that she wouldn't hurt you or Souta. She gave her word and we ran here to the shrine with you. After a few hours Souta was up and running around like nothing had happened, but you still wouldn't wake. I was so scared that maybe YuJie had done something by accident but she quick to tell us that only a sleep spell had been used.
"It was then that your father suggested I speak with your guardian. Mido-san told me that if you were to wake before a new sealing spell had been placed, you might have gone on a rampage. To say I was surprised would have been an understatement. When I came back to my own mind I told them what Midoriko had told me." Pausing to laugh slightly, Sakura continued, "I must have apologized a dozen times to YuJie for ever thinking she would harm you. She simply smiled at me and offered to help by giving you the Shikon. At first your father and I refused, we knew that she would shorten her life by giving it up."
She gave a sigh and looked down at her cup of tea. "That was when she told us about her family and health, I almost cried. She knew she was dying and wanted the Shikon safe, she had figured out we were part of the legendary Kami-creatures when your father mentioned your guardian. She had said it would be an honor to have one of our own guard it, so we relented and accepted her help and the Shikon."
Taking a long drink of her cooled tea Sakura looked at her daughter again. "It was a long ceremony of binding your powers to the Shikon. Somehow, YuJie lived for another six years. During which we became close friends and helped her train a young woman to take over the shrine when she passed. What struck me as strange was that after everything was over you and Souta couldn't remember a thing from that day and yet you loved YuJie as if she was family from the moment you opened your eyes." Shrugging she took another sip of her tea and smiled at the look in Kagome's face.
Kagome's memories of the woman were returning to her and Sakura couldn't help but smile. "Any other questions my dear?"
"A few," Sakura nodded showing she was listening. "Do you have any pictures of YuJie? And when does my training start?" Sakura rose from her chair and motioned for Kagome to follow her into the living room. Sakura pulled an album from the top shelf on the entertainment stand and Kagome sat on the couch opposite it. Flipping through a few pages, Sakura sadly smiled and set the album on Kagome's lap.
The picture was one that YuJie had given them, of her deceased family. YuJie was holding her daughter, while standing in the arms of her husband. "That's Yujie," Sakura pointed to the woman; she had what most would call raven's wing hair. Her chocolate colored eyes were full of warmth and joy as she held a little girl. "The one she's holding is her daughter, if my memory serves me right her name was Kaede." The daughter had inherited her mother's hair. She must have gotten her father's eyes; they were a deep violet color. Her young face was slightly rounder then her mothers. What shocked Kagome the most was her husband, he looked like the human form of Inuyasha. "That's Yujie's husband; his name was Hitame Something wrong sweetie?"
"He looks exactly like Inuyasha, and YuJie looks like Kikyo, except happy." Sakura smiled,
"Yes, I figured as much, and I bet had Kaede grown in to a woman, she would have looked exactly like Inuyasha's mother before she died." Kagome looked at her mother, with shock written on her face and in her eyes. Sakura laughed, "I met Inuyasha's mother when she was pregnant with him and helped her with the delivery. She would of died if I hadn't of been there. Did you know that hanyous are born in their human form?" With a shake of her head, Kagome looked back to the pictures. Every one of them that had YuJie showed the woman's eyes looking almost lifeless. She felt her concern and sadness surface.
"Remember Kagome, she had lost her family and knew she was going to die. While we may have brought some happiness back to her, it was never enough to make her eyes glow like they used to." Kagome nodded sadly and turned to her mother for a hug that would ease the pain. Even in another life the two couldn't find peace together, and it hurt her.
"Now about your training, I would like to start quickly, considering there is a lot to do. But I'll let you decide."
"Lets start, I want to become stronger so I can fight on my own," Kagome felt her mother approve, but also felt the concern for her still healing heart. "I'll be okay momma, I'm sure I never really loved Inuyasha like that, it's just the fact that he lied to me that hurts now."
"If you say so sweetie," Sakura stood and helped Kagome up, "We'll start tomorrow okay? Today, we're going shopping." Kagome looked puzzled for a moment.
"What for?"
"Well, I'll need to get more groceries, and you'll need some training clothes and a few other things."
A few hours later...
Kagome dropped tiredly into the recliner in the living room, followed closely by her mother on the couch.
"Gods, I didn't think it would be that hard to find everything!" Sakura said exasperated. "If we were in Sengoku Jidai it would of only taken maybe an hour to find everything! Not six hours of careful searching!"
Kagome giggled at her mother's words and suggested they go out for dinner. They hadn't made it to the grocery store, and were too tired to cook. Agreeing, they both got up and changed into slightly warmer clothes.
Kagome looked at her mother out of the corner of her eye and had to approve of the blue jeans and loose but formal jade sweater that carefully accented her mother's natural figure. Her slightly baggy blue jeans and baby blue hoody hid most everything. They both threw their hair back in a loose ponytail just before leaving.
Unfortunately it was dinner time and the restaurant was packed, so they had to park a couple of blocks from the family restaurant. Kagome grimace inwardly, knowing her feet were going to kill her in the morning. If the slight numbness was any clue, she would be begging her mother to hold the training for a day or two, to say the least.
"There's a demon that owns this restaurant that drives me nuts. She always seems to be here whenever I come and loves to annoy me about not having your father at my side anymore." Kagome looked at her mother; she felt a dread take over a part of her soul as a thought occurred to her
"Momma, this demon wouldn't happen to be a relation of a wolf name Kouga, would she?" Sakura looked down at her daughter, with mild surprise.
"Yes, she's one of his daughters. How do you know about him?"
Kagome gave a nervous laugh, "Back in Sengoku Jidai, he has "claimed" me as his woman." Sakura gasped and gave her daughter a sympathetic look.
"He laid out his suit to you, but wait a moment!" Sakura stopped and looked at her daughter carefully, "Your physical appearance is that of a seventeen year old human…. When I get my hands on him." Sakura allowed the threat to hang in the air, shocking her daughter next to her.
"Momma!" exclaimed Kagome in a slightly hushed voice.
"A male is not supposed to lay a suit of claim till the woman, if human, which he thinks you are, is at least nineteen. Now, A youkai female is different, a male can lay suit when she's as young as what humans would call ten, but it's actually close to fifty human years." Her mother was muttering all of this just loud enough for Kagome to hear. Hadn't common sense clicked in Sakura's mind, there would be a lot of stares from the passer by whom were mostly human. They were all ready getting strange looks for her muttering and glaring. Suddenly another strike of dread filled Kagome at another thought.
"Kouga doesn't visit often does he? He doesn't have any sons? Please tell me he doesn't" Sakura sighed from her soul with regret as she glanced at Kagome.
"Three sons, but fortunately he doesn't care much for the city, so he only comes to town once in a while and only stays for a day at most. You had better watch yourself in here though," she muttered, "Two of his sons tried to lay suit to you when you were eleven and thirteen. But I told them you knew not of your demon heritage, that I was raising you as a human because your father wasn't around to help me." Her mother sighed again as they entered the restaurant lobby. Shortly after a woman who looked to be in her mid late twenties walked toward them. Her grin could be called nothing short of insane. The woman was closely followed by three males, of whom Kagome figured were her brothers. All seemed to be roughly the same age.
"Well, well, Sakura, it's been a few years since you came in here." The woman said casually to Kagome's mother as she held out a hand in greeting. Sakura just looked at the hand and back up at the woman. Whom Kagome figured to be the daughter of Kouga that her mother had spoke about.
"Cut the chatter Ayana, my daughter and I are tired and hungry. And I'm not in the mood to listen to your gripping about my being a single mother." Sakura whispered loud enough for only the four demons to hear. Kagome caught it though, seeing as how she was right next to her mother. Yet pretended not to by looking around her, after all she was `human.'
Faint memories of being a child in this restaurant with family flooded her mind and left an ache in her soul. A small nudge in her ribs made her look to her mother. She found concern in the woman's chocolate and cinnamon eyes.
"Just remembering," Kagome whispered for only her mother to hear.
"Come on, they're waiting for us up a head."
Looking ahead Kagome saw one of Cougar's sons. He had the same black hair as his father, but his eyes were a dark jade green. His face and body had a softer edging then his father as well. A quick look in his eyes showed his father's temperament, but he was calmer.
"It's good to see you both; may I ask where little Souta and Kejin are?"
"They're visiting some family Kolas, and could you please keep your sister and brothers at bay. I need to talk to Kagome about some family affairs." He nodded with a small smile to Kagome. He gave them their menu's and made himself scarce.
"You don't need to worry about him," Sakura said from behind the menu as she saw Kagome's nervous look in the direction the wolf had left. "He's the only one that didn't try to verbally lay suit to you or myself when your father left." Sakura smirked, "He may be a lot like his father at times, but he has a good heart and a lot of his mother's control." Kagome smiled and nodded as she turned to look through the menu.
Silence passed for about ten minutes as both decided what they wanted. This was the only multi-cultured restaurant in the city and it was their favorite when they wanted something foreign. Kagome decided she was in the mood for an old fashion American cheese burger and Sakura chose lasagna. When Kolas came by again, they quickly told him their orders and Sakura warned him again to keep the other three siblings away. He nodded and quickly walked away with a slight bow.
"Now sweetie, I want you to tell me when Kouga laid his suit to you." Kagome thought for a few minutes, and then told her mother about the Paradise birds and the adventure with Kouga and his pack mates. A sad look crossed her mother's face as she finished the tale. "I'm afraid to say this, but his suit is valid and if he were here now, he would have every right to try and make the claim a reality. There would be nothing I could do to stop him."
"What do you mean momma?" Sakura looked away from her daughter as another sad look passed over her face. "Because you are truly a child of Sengoku Jidai, and had some knowledge and ability to use your powers. And you were in all honesty old enough for him to lay claim when you were in the past. His claim is a valid one."
"But momma, what about his son's claims?" With a small shake of her mother's head, Kagome released a breath she didn't know she was holding.
"Those are null and void, only because at the time you had no knowledge of your true heritage and no access to your powers. Not to mention that you were being raised as a human. If they were to ask again though, I wouldn't be able to defend you and there would be just about nothing you could do to stop them either."
"But my age momma, you told me I would have to be at least fifty in human years."
"This in youkai years would make you about ten. The proper and normal age for females to be thinking about mating in youkai society."
"But wouldn't I still be-"
"Actually dear, there's one little thing that would change that. You see because you were raised as a human, your youkai age is the same as your human." Sakura said with a sad smile as her daughter's eyes sparked with fire.
"You mean I'm seventeen in youkai years!?" Kagome almost screeched, but quickly remembered the mixed company around her. At her mothers nod, Kagome slumped in her seat so that only the top of her head and her eyes were in view to her mother. Those same eyes were glaring at the older female.
"You waited till we are surrounded by youkai, hanyous, and humans. All of whom have been vexing for my attentions since I was a pup! To tell me I'm old enough to be mated to anyone of them?" There was a dangerous edge to Kagome's quiet voice.
"Now you listen here young lady," Sakura hissed. "I didn't intend for this to happen this way." There was an equally dangerous edge to Sakura's voice; as she dared her daughter to openly defy her again. Sighing, Kagome sat up straight and quietly apologized to her mother.
"It's just a bit much to take in a once, I mean until this morning I thought I was human. Only to wake up and find my guardian awoken from her slumber and you going on and on about a part of me that I have no knowledge of and yet everything makes sense." Both females failed to notice the waiter that brought out their food was a kitsune youkai. Kolas appeared a few moments later with a desperate look on his face. "Lady Sakura, I'm afraid I failed you," Kolas' voice seemed so sad and sorry.
"Whatever do you mean pup?"
"Didn't you notice that I was not the one to bring your dinner?" Kagome gulped slightly, this truly wasn't her or her mother's lucky night.
"He was a youkai wasn't he?" Kolas quickly replaced his shocked expression as Sakura earlier request made sense.
"Hai Kagome, one of my sister's favorite kitsune workers. I didn't notice him until he came back in with a smile on his face and approached my sister and brothers." Sakura growled under her breath, "Please allow me to escort you both out before they come-"
"Oh, Sakura, Kagome?!" came the attempted melody of the she-wolf. In reality it scratched at the sensitive ears of her brother and Sakura. Thankfully Kagome's hearing was still that of a humans'.
"Damn," Kolas muttered, and gave the two females the most sympathetic look he could. Sighing, Kagome and her mother stood with their dinner forgotten as the female approached them.
This was not supposed to happen," Sakura muttered under her breath so only Kagome could hear her.
"I know," Kagome responded with grief and hunger that they were abandoning their untouched food. `Mido-san is there any way to get out of here with out the males laying suit to me?'
~*Only one, but you have to allow me to speak through you once they've cornered you. No one but your mother will know its me speaking.*~
`Okay, how do I let them corner me?'
~*Suggest to make this a private affair so that you're not disturbing the others around you.*~
'Thanks Mido-san!' Kagome held in her grin as her guardian promised a way out of this mess and spoke up before anyone could.
"Before this begins, might I suggest we take this to another room; so as not to disturb your other customers?" Kagome gave a slight bow of her head to show her submission to them for the moment, and the wolf youkai led the way to an office in the back.
Once the door was shut and everyone was settled, Ayana started to pick on Kagome's mother for her mate leaving her with two pups. The two younger sons of Kouga tried to lay suit to her. Kagome remembered their names to be Ahiko and Ryouki. Ahiko and Ayana were twins in appearance looking like their mother with their cinnamon hair and jade eyes, which were lighter than Kolas. Ryouki's hair was paler version of his twin siblings and he has his father's crystal blue eyes.
"Enough!" shouted Kagome, hurting all of their ears, "First of all, Ayana, leave my mother alone, my father didn't leave my mother of his own free will." Ayana dropped into her seat as her jaw snapped shut and glared at Kagome. Taking a deep breath Kagome felt Midoriko slip into her mind and take partial control of her body.
"Secondly, Ahiko, Ryouki, drop your suits and now. You all know very well, that if there is no father of the female you wish to court, you have to go through the mother or the female. Now my mother has all ready once denied you both and I'm telling you now that I do not desire a mate at this time. Plus it is wrong and immoral to ask a female without speaking to her father and getting his approval." She glared at them with disapproval, "You know this. So, as a grown woman and as my father's daughter, I am not asking or telling, but demanding that you drop your suits." The jaws of all four wolf siblings hung open, and her mother was smirking in the corner by the door.
"Shall we go now Kagome?" Sakura turned her attention to the four and spoke with venom. "Seeing as how we never even got to bite into our dinner, I'm only leaving a tip." Sakura made sure Kagome walked out ahead of her. Sakura placed a couple tens in Kolas' palm as she walked out and shut the door behind her. A triumphant grin on her cherry lips as she followed her daughter out.
