"Sesshomaru-sama, wait for Rin!" Rin called through the forest ahead of her. The demon lord did not halt or even acknowledge that he heard the human girl's yell. Jaken kept walking also. Ever since Lord Sesshomaru had revived the little human brat, he had been pushed back into near obscurity and complete worthlessness. It was either `Jaken, watch Rin,' or `Jaken, get out of the way.' Never `How are you today, Jaken?' or `Can I do anything for you, Jaken?'. Lord Sesshomaru himself, proud Lord of the Western Lands, who hated humans of any kind…was bordering on nice to this little girl, while he ignored the only retainer he had left. Jaken couldn't see why; she was full of questions, loud, annoying, always fell behind when they were traveling, and nearly ran Jaken ragged every time she decided to play hide and seek.

"Jaken-" started Sesshomaru.

"I know, I know. Go get Rin," said Jaken, irritated. Sesshomaru paid his disrespect no mind, choosing instead to continue walking through the forest. Jaken waddled back down the path towards the little girl in that toad-ish way of his.

"Hurry up, Rin!" he squawked. Rin, who was considerably tired after a whole day's walking without rest, did her best to walk quicker. Upon nearly reaching the toad demon, she tripped on a root and fell. Jaken sighed and rolled his eyes.

"If you don't hurry up, Sesshomaru-sama will be angry with both of us. Now get up." Jaken tapped Rin on the shoulder a little harder than was wise with his fire-breathing staff.

"Ow, what'd you do that for, Jaken-sama?" In a heartbeat, Sesshomaru was at her side, holding Jaken up by the collar.

"Rin, are you okay?" he asked, in that soft way of his. Rin nodded. "Good. Jaken, do you know why I am angry with you?" Jaken gulped and nodded. "Good. Do you realize why I am not going to hurt you very badly?" Again, Jaken gulped and nodded. "Good. Come on, Rin." Sesshomaru turned and tossed Jaken over his shoulder, back-kicking him into a nearby thorn bush. He held out his hand to Rin and they continued through the forest. Jaken sighed and removed himself gingerly from the thorn bush. He followed glumly behind Sesshomaru and Rin, cursing his luck to be the retainer of a Sesshomaru who had a human girl to protect.
