PROLOGUE

Grumbling to herself about stupid hanyous who wouldn't know how to say anything nice to anyone if their life depended on it, the slender, black-haired girl's sapphire eyes filled with tears as she went to lay down for the night beside a huge tree. She wondered, not for the first time, why he persisted in travelling with her when he so obviously detested her company.

Somewhere quite far away...

Damn it! Why'd she always have to get under his skin so quickly, making him say things he didn't really mean? He wanted to go find her, but his pride wouldn't allow him to chase after her, or let him appear weak by apologizing and begging her forgiveness. She'd be back, just as she'd done every other time he lost his temper. But what happens when you push her too far? His conscience asked. What will you do when Kagome doesn't come back? "Feh." he said aloud, even as he allowed his eyes to slowly close, as he drifted off into an uneasy slumber, perched in the branches of his favorite tree.
