Chapter 11
Katsuhito glared at the now silent ronin. He took the hilt of his katana and drew it from the scabbard. "Never let these brats howl. Inu youkai are very possessive of family; he could've been calling someone." The angered man turned to the boy hanyou. "Now to deal with you." His voice was low, practically a snarl.
Young golden eyes widened. He wasn't wearing his fire-rat haori and hakama, so he was vulnerable to mortal weapons. Especially now, with the moon so faint in the sky. The sharp edge of the blade came down on his back. Blood flowed from the wound as he released a pain-filled yelp. Was this man so twisted that he got his joy out of harming others?
"No!" Izayoi cried, lunging to the limit of her chains. Katsuhito backhanded the noblewoman, causing her to fall to the ground. Inuyasha snarled and lunged, his claws racking deep gashes in the human lord's shoulder.
He turned, striking the hanyou in the face once again, opening the area he had bruised earlier. Setsuki leapt to her brother's defense, but was instantly cloven in two by the lord.
"Setsuki!" Inuyasha and Izayoi cried.
The blunt side of the blade caught Inuyasha in the chest, sending him to the ground. Izayoi leapt to her son's side, tears streaming down her face. "Stop it! How much innocent blood must be shed to quell your vengeance?!"
Roughly, Katsuhito shoved her away. "Hanyou are hardly innocent." He turned back to Inuyasha, then stabbed him through the gut.
An agonized cry came from him, then he lashed out with his claws. Blood spurted from the deep gash opened by the blow. A bloody katana fell to the ground with a clatter.
Izayoi leapt in front of her son, shielding him as much as the chains permitted. She whispered softly, and Inuyasha nodded. Firelight glistened off the bloodstained blade then she felt it bite through her back. There was a sudden, sharp pain; then, through the darkness, she saw her beloved Inutaisho. All pain ceased.
"Kasan!" Inuyasha cried. The bloodstained blade caught his eye. A rumbling growl shot into a full-blown snarl. He lunged to the limit of his chain, sinking his claws deep into the man's shoulder, until claw scraped against bone. The pup was flung back then felt a deep, burning gash along his ribs.
Suddenly, a warning growl came from the shadows. Sesshomaru stepped into the light of the fires, poison dripping from his claws. The taiyoukai swept through the camp, killing everyone he could get his hands on. The lord lay with the ronin, breathing heavily as agonizing pain lanced through his blood. There was no way he could survive this poison if he didn't call in a few favors.
Sesshomaru halted at the chains, feeling a sorrowful tug deep in his heart. He'd been too late to save Izayoi and much too late to save his half sister. Inuyasha was badly wounded, and the moon was nearly new. The strength of his youkai blood diminished with the fading of the moon, so it would take him far too long to heal.
He stood, unsheathing Tenseiga. With one pass over his half brother, all the pup's wounds were healed. Venom melted the shackles off as golden eyes blinked open. Tears trembled in them, but he didn't let them fall.
Inuyasha stood, silvery-white ears flattened. "Arigato, Sesshomaru-sama." Deep within, he still thought that his brother would someday take him back, back to the home he had first known. He blinked when strong arms surrounded him in a hug.
Sesshomaru gently pushed his brother back. "Inuyasha, you will put your mother's relatives in danger if you go to them. The won't be able to handle repeated youkai attacks. I can't protect you either, as I'm away from home often to patrol the borders of the Western Lands." His tone insinuated that he didn't trust his underlings to keep his brother safe. "The time has come for you to be on your own."
He released the pup's shoulders and stood, watching him run off. The taiyouaki felt violently disgusted by his instincts. 'I can't do anything to him yet. My instincts still see him as a pup that needs to be protected. Once he is grown, he'd better hope that his path never crosses mine again.' Sesshomaru left before the samurai of Izayoi's village came upon the scene.
Inuyasha hid in the bushes, unnoticed by the samurai that approached. His young nose caught the scent of his uncle as well as several of his uncle's most trusted friends.
The samurai stared at the carnage before them. "What happened here?" one openly wondered.
Mamoru looked up from his dead sister's face. "Katsuhito happened to them." He then studied the wounds on the ronin as well as the lord. "Apparently, Lord Sesshomaru caught him and didn't like what he was doing."
A slight rustle caught his attention. He turned to the bushes, finding golden eyes staring out at them from between the leaves. Mamoru took a step towards his nephew, but the child bolted. There was no way he'd be able to keep up with a hanyou, especially one as frightened as Inuyasha seemed to be.
Intense relief flooded through him and was apparently visible in his expression.
"Lord Mamoru, what is it?"
He glanced at Kenjo, his eyes still soft and sad. "Inuyasha is still alive, but he was so frightened that when I tried to approach him, he ran off." His gaze returned to the forest, hoping to catch a silver-white gleam in the shadows. There was nothing to be seen by his eyes. 'Inuyasha, I hope that you will get over your fear and come to us. Right now, you're all the family I have left.'
