Chapter 3: A night with no sleep

Character List:
Jakeu (Mysterious Boy, also voice of narrator)
Miroku
Kagome
Inuyasha
Sango
Shippo

And with that, we traveled together... none of them really trusted me, especially Inuyasha. To him, I was nothing but a burden... an extra weight on his shoulders. I played with Shippo as we traveled into the sunset, even beating him at his own game with tops. In the evening when we had stopped to rest in a clearing, I practiced mediatation with Miroku. For the first time in a while... I felt at peace.

Tonight would be my first chance to change what happened that fateful night... I prayed I'd have the strength. It was getting dark... a village was ahead in a small clearing. Without a word or without so much as a glance from Inuyasha, it was clear we would be staying here for the night. We approached the richest looking house in the village... I knew exactly what to expect.

"You say my house is haunted monk?"

"Indeed. I sense a very strong demonic aura raidiating from these walls..." Miroku lied through his teeth to the Village Cheif, looking pretty convincing to any onlooker. With mild spirtual power myself, I sensed no real danger anywhere nearby. "I must take care of it right away before it can harm anyone in this village."

"Well then I insist you let us repay you... stay with us for the night... we were just getting ready for dinner..."

"I can't..."

"But I insist... you and your friends should stay with us for the night..." Miroku agreed at last, lying was definatly something he was good at. I looked over at the rest of my party, each one of them knowing there was no real danger... but no one dared argue. The thought of a nice meal and a place to stay from the elements was just too good. Even Inuyasha was starving... Kagome had ran out of Ramen the last time we stopped.

FLASHBACK - INUYASHA'S TRUST (PART A)

My stomach started to turn... I couldn't remember when I last ate. The noise was loud enough for everyone to hear.

"Are you alright Jakeu?" Sango turned to me consered... I countinued to hold my stomach, groaning in agony. Miroku stopped and joined Sango. "I think he's just hungry... I've felt like that myself."

All I could manage was a slight nod. Kagome and Shippo stopped walking when they noticed and surrounded me, leaving Inuyasha in the distance. He looked away in disbelief... the fact that I had even traveled with them to this point was beyond him... I was worthless in his eyes.

"Let me see if I have something in my bag." Kagome kneeled to the ground, reaching in her oversized bag... pulling out something an empty packaging... I had eaten wraped in this myself with Kagome the night before he came...

"Ramen..." The sound of the word spooked Kagome... "How do you know what this is? It doesn't exist in the feudal era..."

Before I could respond my vision got hazy... everything turned black... I fell down onto the could earth.

"Feh. Worthless." I caught a glimpse of Inuyasha turning around in my last moments of consciousness.

"INUYASHA SIT!"

When I came to, they offered me some berries that they made Inuyasha search for. This only made Inuyasha despise me more.

FLASHBACK ENDED

I quickly devored the meal the Village Cheif put before me, rivaling Miroku and Inuyasha in speed. I could feel the looks of dismay on Kagome and Sango's faces... but I was too hungry to care. Shippo just looked in amazement as I finished bowl after bowl of food.

It was Inuyasha's turn to stand on guard that night... he quickly volunteered that I should stand guard and pull my own weight. Before Kagome could say another sit command at Inuyasha, I agreed with him. I needed him to trust me... maybe this would help.

I moved the door to the side, walking about 20 ft away from the hut to an old oak tree. I rested myself against it and began meditation, trying to sense any approaching danger.

NARRATOR SWITCH - MIROKU (Jakeu is outside on guard, unable to hear this)

I layed in bed awake that night... Inuyasha, Sango, Shippo, and Kagome had all passed out, weiry of traveling. I had something stuck on my mind. It didn't make any sense to me but I was certain I sensed it. Jakeu's spirtual power... I couldn't figure it out.

Something must have been bothering Sango as well. She quietly walked over to me... without even seeing her face, I knew it was her. Sango was never far from my mind.

"Miroku... are you alright?"

"Yes Sango... is something bothering you?"

"You kept talking in your sleep... it woke me up." She came and sat down next to me... I sat up and turned to her. I knew I could trust her with what I was about to tell her.

"I keep thinking about Jakeu... its been bugging me."

Being so straight-forward with her made me feel at ease. It really surprised her though...

"He just seems like a normal kid... I don't see a problem... he kinda reminds me of Kohaku..." I tell by the look in her eyes everytime she said that name just how sad she felt. I put my arms around her, not daring to even try anything perverted. Instead of making things worse about talking about Kohaku and how we were going to save him, I changed the topic back to Jakeu.

"Its just his motives Sango... why did he know so much about us? Why does he insist on traveling with us?"

"The fact that he hates Naraku for killing his parents is reason enough to let him stay."

"Its not that I don't trust him Sango... he's got me kinda worried." Sango looked over to me in disbelief, not really understanding what I was getting at. "Its the beads he wears on his hands... they are almost identical to my own."

"Your worried over some beads Miroku?" She laughed at me... just what I needed... "I seen a lot of monks wearing beads similar to yours before..."

"But our power... is on the same wavelength. When we meditated earlier, I could feel it... just for a second."

"What do you mean Miroku?"

NARROTOR SWITCH - JAKEU

I was continuing my mediatation... the quietness of the night was relaxing...

When I was just about to fall asleep, I could feel her presence in the air. My first chance at changing the inevitable would be tonight. I ran inside the hut, waking Kagome, Inuyasha, and Shippo up. I ran into the other room where Sango and Miroku were while they were talking.

"But our power... is on the same wavelength. When we meditated earlier, I could feel it... just for a second."

"What do you mean Miroku?"

I bursted into the room... they were both pretty embarrassed to be caught holding each other... let alone talking about me. I really didn't mind it though. "She's coming..."

"Who's coming?" Sango stood up quickly, distancing herself from Miroku.

"I don't feel anything... is this a false alarm?" Miroku stood up... just as he was getting his barrings, he sensed a demonic aura getting closer... Inuyasha, Shippo, and Kagome came into the room with us.

"Its Kagura..." I turned away from them... "Above all else tonight, we must not harm her."

"Why should we listen to you?" Inuyasha blurted out... the others felt the same feeling... why should they spare Kagura. "Kagura is just one of Naraku's Incarnations."

I turned to Inuyasha, getting into his face. "Naraku plans to reabsorb her into his being Inuyasha."

"Feh. Like I care? We are going to destroy Naraku anyway, with or without your help."

That last statement of his really hurt. Anger filled my face... my fists shook.

"What is your problem Inuyasha? Why don't you trust me!"

"Why should I? You could just be another one of Naraku's reincarnations trying to lead us into a trap, telling us not to destroy Kagura."

I turned away from him, unable to face him. "Do what you want with me then, but let Kagura live. Everyone, use restraint." I walked away from the group and out of the hut. Kagome was furious with Inuyasha... her anger was redirected though as they came outside to face Kagura. Shippo stayed around the hut with Kilala, protecting the village while we faught Kagura.

Why wouldn't he just trust me. My hands went down and grasped the handles of my two katana's, pulling them out. It had been a while since I saw a fight... wondered if I was a little rusty.

Why did he have to fall for her? Why did her death make him seek revenge? Whatever the reason, I can't allow Inuyasha or the others to destroy her.
