Chapter Twenty-two

Thor laid on his pet, staring at the ceiling with one hand tucked beneath his head on the other stroking the fur of his pet a Jiro; one of Kirara's kittens. Jiro had smooth cream fur, amber eyes and nine tails with black tips. The small kitten purred as his owner gently stroked his fur. He yawned and stretched before finding himself a comfortable spot and lying down for a nice, long cat nap.

It had been two weeks since the last time he had seen Raine. Even though she was no more than five weeks pregnant, there was a visible bulge. During the time that he had known Raine, Thor had never seen her so happy. The last time he saw her all she could do was laugh and smile. She even danced and sang.

How he wished there was a way they could communicate. He really missed her and longed for her company once more. Maybe they could send letters to each other, but how would they be delivered? Thor couldn't think of any other way for them to talk, which was something he desperately wanted.

“You wouldn't happen to have any ideas would u Jiro?” He asked.

Then it occurred to him. They could send letters to each other. All they needed was a messenger.

Raine was outside in the gardens. It was the closet to a forest she could get since, because of her pregnancy, Yosuke would not allow her to go back there. She sat on the ground, close to a small pond and watched the fish swim. Yosuke sat behind her to support her back. She rubbed her belly, still shocked at its rapid growth. Maybe it was because she ate so much, she did eat almost ten square meals a day. Yet, surprising, the only part of her that grew was he belly. Unlike normal pregnant women her thighs or ankles or fingers hadn't grown. Or maybe it was too early for that. Either way she found it odd.

“Do you want anything from the kitchens” Yosuke asked.

“Some strawberries would be nice.” She said.

Yosuke rose from his seat behind her and left to fetch her strawberries. The moment he did, a small, cream cat with nine tails came out of the bushes and walked towards Raine. It sat beside her and gave her the piece of paper it held in it's mouth. It read:

“My beloved Raine, I give you my pet, Jiro as a means of communication. He will be our messenger, sending letters from you to me and me to you. I miss you greatly my love and it seems like this is the only way we can speak to each other for now. You need not worry about feeding him or any such things, he is very capable of taking care of himself. I love you.”

Raine heard footsteps behind her and shoved the letter in her sleeve before picking up the cat called Jiro. He was so cute.

“Where did he come from?” Yosuke asked.

“I don't know. What's this?” She asked. She noticed another piece of paper, this time tucked away in the gold collar the cat wore. This one read:

“To the angel that saved me I give you this pet as a gift to say thank you.

The Prince of the Western Lands”.

“Looks like we have friends in high places.” Yosuke said.

Raine picked up a strawberry and ate it.

Who did she think she was fooling? Not Romy of course. Oh no, she couldn't fool her nosy and suspicious mother-in-law. Her son may not have noticed it, but she did. The...girl, had gotten herself pregnant around the same time the heir to the Western Lands had stayed with them. Her soon was too bewitched by his wife, so he wouldn't have connected the dots, but all would be revealed in good time.

Romy finished her bowl of noodles and Ayumi took the bowl from her. If anyone knew anything about Raine's pregnancy it would be Ayumi. The two were not friends, but Ayumi was close to Raine.

“Ayumi dear, before you go I would like to ask you something: how is it that my daughter-in-law came to be pregnant?” She asked

Ayumi looked at Romy confused. Was there something wrong with her mistress? A woman of her age should know such things.

“Sumimasen, I do no understand the question.” Ayumi said.

“You know what I mean,” Romy said with a wicked smile that made the hairs on the back of Ayumi's neck stand up. “Who is the father?” She asked.

Again Ayumi was confused by the question. “Why, master Yosuke of course.” She said. Before Romy could ask her another weird question, Ayumi left.

The girl was of no help to her; she'd have to do her own digging. Maybe Myoko could give her some clue. That wicked smile appeared again.

She sighed and brushed off the front of her skirt as she stood. She slid open the dining room door and headed for Myoko's. The nurse knew better than anyone the growth rate of a human carrying a hanyou child and if the time lines were the same then she could prove her daughter-in-law's infidelity.

As she made her way to Myoko's nursing station, she passed Chimu's headstone. She missed her husband, she still hadn't gotten over his death, but she had found a way to deal with her pain. It was better than therapy, far better than taichi and the next best thing after fighting it out. Nothing brought her more pleasure, nothing could compare. It was the best thing she had ever done. Picking on Raine. That little hellion deserved to be treated the way Romy tormented her; at least Romy thought so.

She knocked on the door and Myoko opened it. The healer bowed when she saw her visitor was her mistress. She moved away from the door, allowing Romy to enter. She then closed the door and asked how she could be of service.

“For a human carrying a hanyou child, what is the normal growth rate?” Romy asked.

Why on earth would her mistress be asking such a question? This was odd. Had the death of her husband affected her so greatly that she had gone mad? Or was it simply that she was asking the question about herself, Myoko thought.

“Are you feeling alright mistress?” Myoko asked.

“I am fine. Answer the question.” Romy said.

“Well hanyou's develop faster than human children and the pregnancy usually last four to five months. So one month with a hanyou child would be about two or two months and two weeks with a human child.” Myoko said.

What a coincidence. Raine looked to be about three months pregnant.

Shiaka stood beside Thor, smiling from ear to ear. This was the happiest day of her life. She couldn't believe it was actually happening, at that very moment. She had waited so long for this day to arrive and it finally had. She just felt like jumping up and down and clapping. She was shaking a little bit , but that was expected. It was finally happening, Oh Kami it was finally happening. Soon they would be able to see each other without hiding and feeling guilty.

“Congrats.” Thor said to his baby sister.

“Arigato. So when do I get to meet this mystery girl?” She asked.

Thor remained silent.

“Mokuba,” Sesshomaru began “ as your Lord I release you from your bond, allowing you to make my only daughter your mate. You will no longer be a soldier in my army, you will no longer have to fight for me.”

It was now Mokuba's turn to speak. “ My Lord, words can not express how grateful I am for this opportunity. I no longer wish to fight for you, but for your family. From this day forth I vow to fight at your sons', your daughter's and your mate's side.” He said.

Sesshomaru nodded. “You are one of my best soldiers, but to prove that you can protect my family you must not fight me, my sons or my daughter, but my mate.” He said,

“Okaasan?” Thor, Shiaka and Malique asked in unison.

“Hai, she is a very skilled warrior and much better than you think.” Sesshomaru said.

“I accept.” Mokuba said.
