Chapter 9

Unexpected Revelations Redux

InuYasha looked around at his friends and frowned in disgust. Kagome, Sango and Miroku had hardly touched their breakfast; they were groaning and holding their aching heads.

“What's the matter with you guys?” He said, wolfing down another bite.

“Hangover…”groaned Kagome, “Gotta get some acetaminophen out of my pack.”

“What's that?”

“Headache medicine,” she said, “I'll bring enough back for everyone.”

“Feh!” said InuYasha, “I'm fine, don't bring any back for me.”

“You're lucky you woke up at the same time your demon powers returned, or else I'm sure you'd feel as bad as I do,” said Miroku, as he reached out to put an arm around Sango who leaned her leaned her head on his shoulder.

“Heh!” scoffed the half demon, “You humans and your aches and pains.”

After they ate, packed, and took their medicine, they were on their way. It was slow going for a while (due to the humans and their hangovers), but InuYasha left off teasing them about it again. He really wasn't too eager to be reunited with Shippo now, and brooded a bit on how he was going to handle the little fox demons habit of sleeping with Kagome. He decided that Kagome would just have to tell Shippo that he could not sleep with her anymore. All children had to grow up some time. InuYasha had been forced to grow up alone, fast, and Shippo just had to learn how lucky he was to have friends like them at all.

The rest if the trip passed uneventfully, and Kagome noticed InuYasha had stopped scheming to get her alone to screw her brains out. In fact, he was uncharacteristically subdued, obviously lost in his own thoughts. As it approached early evening, Kagome walked up to him and slipped her hand in his. He held her hand and turned to give her a thoughtful smile. They would be in Kaedes village in an hour or so.

:”InuYasha, what are you thinking about?” Kagome asked softly.

He sighed.

“Have you thought about what we are going to tell Shippo?” He asked.

“Um, not really.”

“You should,” he said earnestly, “you should tell him that he won't be sleeping with you anymore.”

“Why?”

InuYasha stopped in his tracks and turned to face her.

“Because you are mine, Kagome,” he said, “and child or not I won't have any other male get that close to you.”

“But I'm like his mother.” She said plaintively.

“You are not his mother, you are his friend and it's about time he learns that. If anyone is going to sleep with you it's going to be me.”

“Will you really sleep with me at night?”

“Yes, unless we are in known danger. It will be easier to protect you on those nights if I am not hindered by your sleeping bag.”

“Okay,” said Kagome in a small voice, “I'll tell him.”

He reached out and put his arm around her to give her a quick, reassuring hug before taking her hand and resuming their journey. Soon they were in the village. Shippo was waiting for them in front of Kaedes house. He had obviously been watching for them.

“Kagome, Kagome!” He yelled happily, jumping up and scooting into her arms.

InuYasha gave a low warning growl.

“Hi InuYasha, Miroku, Sango, boy have Kirara and I missed you guys!”

With wide eyes Shippo noticed that Sango and Miroku were holding hands, and as Kagome put him down, he looked up as InuYasha took her hand.

“What's going on?” Shippo asked as they walked to the house, “Did something happen while you were gone?”

“Let's get to the house,” said Kagome “and I'll explain later.”

Kaede smiled as she saw the couples approaching. It made her heart glad to see that InuYasha and Kagome, and Miroku and Sango were obviously together. She had been aware of their feelings for each other, even if they had not been. She welcomed them in the house, and they all sat around the fire to eat the meal she had prepared.

Shippo sat on Kagomes right and InYasha on her left. The fox demon child kept looking at her expectantly, waiting for her explanation all through the meal. On her other side InuYasha was also looking at her, his impatience to have her talk to Shippo obvious in his expressive eyes. Kagome wanted to sink into the floor. With a sigh, she put down her empty bowl and turned to the child.

“Are you finished Shippo?” she said, trying to sound cheerful, “:Let's go out back and talk”

“Great!” he said, and jumped up to follow her.

They sat down outside in back of the house, and Shippo went to climb in her lap, but she gently took him and put him down in front of her.

“Shippo, things have changed while we were away, as you have noticed.”

“Yeah, why was InuYasha holding your hand? And why did he growl at me that way?”

“InuYasha has chosen me, as his…mate.”

“Really:” said Shippo, “He isn't going o be with Kikyo?”

“Not if I can help it.” Kagome said ruefully.

“That's great!”

“Yes, it is. I am really happy. But certain things are going to be different from now on.”

“Like what?” He said, wide eyed.

Kagome took a deep breath and sighed.

“You know how possessive InuYasha can be of me,” she began.

“Yeah, sure, every time Kouga comes around you he wants to kill him.”

`Yes, well, he's even more…territorial now.” Kagome said and bit her lip.

“And…” encouraged Shippo.

“And therefore, you can't be throwing yourself on me, and sleeping with me at night anymore.”

“But I'm just a child!” He wailed sadly.

“Not to InuYasha. You are male, and you are not related to me. He has told me that he will be sleeping with me from now on, and you must sleep somewhere else.”

“But where?” he whined.

“Well, where have you been sleeping while we were gone?”

“With Kirara/”

“I'm sure Sango won't mind if you continue to sleep with Kirara. She and Miroku are together now, and most likely will be sleeping with each other.”

Shippo looked down at the ground dejectedly.

“Don't be sad,” said Kagome, taking him in a quick hug, “we are still friends, right?”

“Right,” he said softly.

“Good, now let's go rejoin the others.”

InuYasha had been pressed to the side of the house, listening. He was satisfied with what she told Shipp, but did not want her o know he had been eavesdropping. Quickly he ran backing the house and sat down. Miroku and Sango looked at him, eyebrows raised and knowing smiles on their faces.

“What are you looking at?” He snapped at them.

“Nothing InuYasha,” Miroku said, shaking his head.

Kagome and Shippo came inside and sat back down. InuYasha put is arm around her and pulled her against his side. Shippo looked up at him from her other side.

“InuYasha, I just want you to know that I am really glad you chose Kagome,” he said, “I always knew you loved her best.”

“Uhhh…” said InuYasha, taken by surprise and turning a shade of red in embarrassment.

Kagome was looking at him expectantly.

“You do love her, don't you InuYasha?” said Shippo.

Now all eyes were on InuYasha, waiting to hear his response. He sweat dropped.

“Yeah, sure I do…” he mumbled, eyes cast down to his lap.

When he looked up, the first thing he saw was Kagome with an ecstatic smile on her face, her eyes trembling with unshed tears of happiness. He almost toppled over in surprise as she through her arms around his neck in a big hug.

“That's the closest you ever came to telling me you loved me!” Kagome said joyfully

“Yeah, well…you know I do…love you…that is.” He mumbled.

Over her shoulder, he picked up his head as everyone started to applaud. Then he flattened his ears, sinking down and burying his face in Kagomes lap so no one could see his embarrassment.

“Ok everyone, let's give him a break,” said Kagome, stroking the half demons head soothingly.

Everyone got up and went about their business of unpacking, cleaning up, and getting ready to go to sleep.

A/N: Sorry, no lemons in this chapter. I thought this was going to be the last one, but since my muse has returned this story has gotten longer than I expected. Muse willing, the next chapter will be the last.
