Chapter 1:A simple beginning

`It has been three years since I started my hunt for the jewel shards with InuYasha…' Kagome Higurashi sighed as she propped her head up on her hand, elbow on her desk. Her other hand lightly flipping the pink pen unconsciously in her hands, as she stared out the window. The boy in which was to her left kept looking over nervously as if thinking she was staring at him. It made her smile slightly, as she saw this in the corner of her chocolate brown eyes.

She sighed to herself, `And yet the Jewel has yet to be completed and we are still struggling to keep up with Naraku's constant moving about.' She shook her head. The only reason they had been able to keep up with the dangerous hanyou was because she had managed to keep track of the sense of the jewel shard, as well as the strong barrier that he created for himself, and yet her being here wasn't helping them any.

Now that she was thinking about they hadn't actually encountered with Naraku for a long while, once or twice with the wind witch; Kagura. Then of course the unfortunate event of meeting up with a new reincarnation, which all seemed to be getting stronger and trickier as they went. And yet all fell to the might fang the InuYasha wielded; Tetsusaiga.

“Miss Higurashi…”

Everyone in the group had really buckled down on becoming stronger, even herself had improved. With help from Lady Kaede she had been able to focus most of the spiritual energy into an attack and weapon of her own. The exact same pure light that burst from her hands when Mistress Centipede had come threw the well to grab her; she didn't know what it was then; of course now she did.

“Miss Higurashi…”

She nodded incoherently to her own thoughts, but there was another problem. The jewel shards, Naraku had managed to snag most of them completing probably just a little more then three fourths of the sacred jewel. She knew Kouga the prince of the wolf demons had three. (He had gained another over the last year, to which InuYasha wasn't to happy about), and then she a little bit; but she couldn't help feel that there were still shards out there. That neither her friends nor their sworn enemy had accomplished to find.

“Kagome!”

The voiced suddenly boomed, invading her thoughts and the girl immediately shot to her feet grasping the math book with in her hands and randomly speaking up the first thing that came to mind, “X equals forty-nine.” She had only guessed, and the contained giggles from the class only concluded that she was wrong.

Sighing she slumped back into the chair, her shoulders slouching her as she lightly looked up at the teacher he look like he was about to say something, but just as he opened his mouth the bell rang for class to end. `Thank Kami!' She cheered inwardly as a small smile surfaced on her features, quickly shoving the math book into her backpack; she quickly bowed to the teacher and ran out the room before he could even start to comment on her day dreaming. School wouldn't be fun to go back to next time.

Fortunately for herself she had somehow managed to elude herself from her three good friends, and Hojo. The boy was much intoned lately into trying to coax into going out on a date with him, during the weekends. Somehow, he would make the excuse up for her stating off one her rare unheard of “diseases” the Grandpa Higurashi would come up with. It seemed lately they were becoming even more and more foreign as the weeks went by. She was surprised she hadn't died, and seemingly come back from the dead yet…

Shaking her head slightly she smiled quickly admitting to herself that she indeed loved her family very much. Placing a hand on the shoulder strap of the back pack she took off into a small jog as she ran threw afternoon Tokyo traffic of both human's as well as vehicles. The sooner she got home, the less InuYasha would be mad. Not saying that he was pissed the moment that she said she was going back to her time; just something tugged at her telling her to hurry, because something else told her that he was there waiting for her, groaning at the thought it only made her speed up her pace.

Opening the screen door to the family shrine, she slipped off her own brown loafers and set her backpack down beside them. The pained yowl coming from the kitchen only quickly signaled that the dog hanyou was in her home.

Rolling her eyes she trudged threw the living room and glancing over at her younger brother; Souta, who seemed more, interested in the cartoons on the television screen then her coming home. And into the kitchen where she saw her mother stirring the stew for tonight's dinner in which she knew she wouldn't been attending again.

Her chocolate eyes scanned the room, as she just barely caught sight of the calico cat that had scuttled from the kitchen between her feet, she looked up to see a red faced boy, who had four small claw marks across his cheek. His lovely golden eyes turned to meet hers' and she immediately looked away.

“You know InuYasha, I have warned you enough times not to torture Buyo…” She drawled, stepping into the kitchen.

“Keh!” the grumpy hand reached up and wiped the tiny bit of blood away with his red haori sleeve. Nothing to bother about, it would be gone by this evening; if not sooner.

He then stood up from the ground and spoke up, “Come on then we are going back.”

Kagome's mouth fell open as she shook her head, “Can't I at least get my stuff and eat?”

“No! Besides you were supposed to be back yesterday.” He growled out.

“Yeah? Well, I can spend at least one night here. I am starting to believe you think I am supposed to live in that era with you.” She spoke and trudged out the room, heading up to her room to get herself ready.

InuYasha's dog ears drooped slightly as he let out a small whine of protest and followed after her. Did she not want to spend the time with him? Didn't she want to come back and see him? See the others as well? Grabbing hold of the door knob he let himself in. Eyes catching the girl in her closet heaving the yellow backpack out of it, as well as grabbing some clothes with it.

“Kagome…”

“I'll be done soon so we can leave.” She smiled towards him as if what they had just debated over the kitchen didn't affect her none.

He slumped down onto her pink spread along her bed and crossed his legs as he watched her every move with his eyes as she slowly but steadily jam packed the bag with what she needed. “We can stay here tonight.” He blurted.

The miko paused with her arm in the bag having been setting down some of the candies for Shippou and shook her head, “No it is fine. I've already spent enough time here and I miss everyone.” She spoke before turning around and tossing some more necessities in to the bag.

InuYasha only gave a brief nod, he had offered didn't he. It wasn't his fault if tonight she complained about not having her bed, and always sleeping outside. Then again, he would just make sure that they slept in Kaede's hut this evening.

Though somewhere in the very depth of his mind, it was yelling at him; although he clearly ignored it; whatever foreboding sense that pestered him could wait later. Right now he watched the girl, admiring as she kept to working in collecting her things. Completely ignoring the warning…

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

InuYasha had been the first one she met- a dog hanyou, his father being the demon, and his mother a human. He had been at the first the rudest person she believed she had ever come across. When he believed that she was still his deceased love Kikyou. And yet over the years it seemed like the two had been becoming closer and closer with there friendship. Even if Kagome thought that there just might be more between the two. It had been at a relative stand still the last year or so. Secret whispers not heard by each other, a catch of each other's eyes. It all just seemed so perfect when he was around, like nothing could ever go wrong. Nothing could ever, would ever, try and hurt her.

Her second companion had been the young kitsune, Shippou; having saved him from the Thunder Brother's wrath, and letting Shippou have revenge on his father's murder. Yet, over the last two years the boy had seemed to suck up his courage when it came to battling and threw his weight into the game. His trickery having saved them enough times to let InuYasha becoming jealous and stop saying that it was pure luck that he had helped kill the demon, and yet Shippou, in Kagome's terms had also becoming a miniature mascot. Whenever she seemed to be having the worst day of her life, the little fox would be able to `flip her frown upside down'. She wouldn't trade him for her life.

Then came the ever flirtatious monk, which she believed at times only used that title in a way that a real monk never would. Miroku's great-grandfather had been cursed with a hole in his hand that could pull demons into a bottomless black void and send them to another world. He of course had used it to his best ability when it came to fighting the demons around them. And with Kagome's meddling, in which he has yet to admit, he has a secret love for Sango. Kagome's matchmaker powers could only work so far and now she believed with one last good push he'll finely admit to her, it hasn't happened yet. But it will.

Sango had been their latest friend. A woman had unfortunately lost all of her family and friends to Naraku's whim, excluding her companion and pet Kirara; a fire cat demon that follows her everywhere and could maximize her size into in which had been both great in travel and battle. Hefting the large bone boomerang surprised Kagome at first when she saw how large it was, but that surprise died and was brought by a new one at how powerful and far she could throw the thing, as it were a weightless paper plane. Between her and Kirara, the two, she believed, could be unstoppable on there good days. Sango had been like the other sister that Kagome never had. She loves the woman dear to her heart, and only hoped that someday Sango would be able to settle down with happiness in her hear with a certain, somebody.

All her friends had become dear to her in different ways, a long while ago she had been explained to about the four souls that were adapt to being able to purify and make the jewel whole once more. Sakimitama (love) which she had come to believe in her heart was InuYasha, Kushimitama (wisdom) which had become Miroku. Aramitama (courage) which indeed had become Sango, and then of course Nigimitama (friendship) which was Shippou. They were her friends, and together somehow. They would manage to get threw this; together, once and for all.

Kagome's brow wrinkled with thought as she looked down at the grass in front of her, as she and InuYasha made their way threw the forest that had been named after him. His voice was the only thing lucky enough to draw her from her deepened thoughts about her friends.

“What are you thinking about?” He said in a rather soft notion as he shifted the backpack over his left shoulder in a more comfortable position, he had offered to hold it for her; though even over the time that he knew the young woman he had to wonder why earth she kept bringing all this stuff with her.

“Just our friends,” She said looking up at him with a brilliant smile that made him somewhat weak in the knees. Even if he would never truly admit to her how much in the depth of his heart he was truly feeling for the girl. He suppressed a small whine as his ears flicked slightly to the sounds of the night.

The rest of the walk to the old priestess's hut had been silent. Almost nerve wrecking.

“Kagome! You've come back!” A happy childish voice squeaked in excitement and the next thing the young miko knew was that she was pummeled into the chest by a light wait, small arms wrapping as far as they could around her neck.

”Shippou, I brought you candies.” She supplied with her own arms around the small child.

“Are you serious?” His blue eyes twinkled with excitement as he managed to scurry onto her shoulder and both her and InuYasha continued there walk down towards the hut.

”Yup, when we get backs to Kaede's I'll give you one box.”

“Oh! Oh! Let me go warn the others you are on your way!” He said leaping on with such enthusiasm it surprised both her, and she could have sworn she heard an odd sort of noise from InuYasha as well, as they watched Shippou run down the hill and back into the village, disappearing into one of the huts.

“Why do you spoil him with all that stuff? It could get him sick.” InuYasha spoke out quietly, though he surely didn't mean it. She could have sworn she heard a hint of jealousy within it.

“I thought you said that youkai can't get sick?” She asked turning and raising an eyebrow towards.

An indignant snort was all she got for an answer as her crossed his arms in a stubborn way, ears flickering just slightly.

His actions only made Kagome giggle slightly before she pushed passed the mat door of the old priestess' hut.

“Kagome, it is good to see you again.” Miroku supplied from his spot near the fire as he waved his purple fabric, white bead clad hand towards her. The one with the cursed wind tunnel, smiling she waved back.

“How was your visit? Sorry it was very hard to keep InuYasha at bay; but he is always moping and complaining when you leave.” Sango replied from her spot, a mewling Kirara supplied her welcome from the comfort of her owner's lap.

InuYasha growled out something like a `no', but no true words came threw as he lightly set her bag down next to the door itself and walked over to the wall and sat cross legged, pulling Tetsusaiga in front of him and crossing his arms over it.

Kagome smiled at Sango, as they both tried to contain their laughter. After another moment Kagome took another glance around the hut, “Where is Kaede?”

“She went to assist with the birth of a child, said she would be back much later and not to wait up on her if we wanted to sleep.” Miroku said as he turned in his spot to face Kagome.
“Okay, just wondering.” She said kneeling before her backpack, rummaging around for a moment before pulling out the pocky and entering it into Shippou's already waiting hands.

The kitsune scampered of to his seat, and gorged himself happily into the sugared sweets that he got nearly every time Kagome came back from her time.

Kagome sighed as she stretched her back a moment before sitting down comfortably near the fire, her eyes meeting InuYasha's closed ones before she turned to Miroku himself, “Has there been any word of the jewels?” She asked curious and ready to catch up on business and news that she had missed threw the last few days.

Miroku only shook his head, “There was rumor of a band three tiger demons running a muck two villages over, while they might have a jewel; it is also a very good chance that they don't have any either. So it could be a good waste of our time.” He said with a shrug of his shoulders.

“That still doesn't mean we can't say no, I think we should go. Even if they don't have the jewel, we could be saving many villagers!” Sango countered eyeing Miroku.

“My dear Sango, I was not saying that we allow them to die. Merely that it we might be able to find better leads.” He said holding his hands up in mock surrender.

“I still think we should go, maybe if we do; then some people will have the answers we need. Who knows, there demons could be related in Naraku's plans somehow.” Sango spat back.

As Kagome watched this tiny brawl happen between the two she turned and looked at InuYasha who had opened his eyes to watch with a curious glint in his eyes.

“What do you think InuYasha?

The quarrel ended abruptly as both Miroku and Sango turned to look over at InuYasha, who immediately looked away and towards Kagome. “I don't see why not, anything for a jewel shard, right?” He said quickly adding in the last bit. It would be a cold day in hell before he admitted he cared about pathetic weaklings.

Kagome clapped her hands together, “Fine then it is settled, and we will leave tomorrow then. Bright and early, we best be getting to sleep!” She said rather quickly. The others nodded their agreement.

They all began to get settled for the night's sleep. InuYasha stayed where he was calmly closing his eyes, his ears flickering every so often. While on the other hand everyone else grabbed a mat from the corner and settled down near the dying fire. Shippou automatically curled up into Kagome's arms. Sleep seemed to find everyone very quickly.

Alright, this is my first fan fiction, and this chapter is rather very short. Sorry, but my beginnings are never my strong point. I will warn you now, this chapter is rated for future scenes that will occur in later chapters.

The next update probably won't before a little while, I am rather very sick, and may end up in the hospital, but I do promise when I get better I will update when I can. School also approaches.
