The Untouchables

Part 3

"I wonder what could have happened to those three." Kaede spoke her thoughts out aloud, not expecting a reply from anyone. The other two were asleep. Miroku was sleeping due to the medicine and Shippou was sleeping since it was so late. 'The sun should be coming up soon. I know I should go look for them, but something tells me it would be wiser to stay here.'

Kaede sat still awhile longer, looking into the fire. Considering what she should do, when Miroku groaned in his sleep. Kaede rose up from her sitting position and walked over to the monk. Picking up the cup she had next to him, she made him drink more.

"It isn't wise for you to awaken just yet." Kaede whispered. She couldn't help but notice how young and fragile Miroku looked like that. His face was scrunched in pain, and from the bitterness that she was making him drink. There were bandages wrapped around his head, laced with medicine to help his jaw heal. Even in such a state, Kaede couldn't help but think he was still handsome. It was no wonder that Sango fell for him so easily.

"Kaede…" The older woman jumped at the intrusion on her thoughts, as Sango spoke her name. Turning to look at the teen, Kaede noticed that should was hurting really bad.

"Are you all right Sango?" When Sango looked down at her feet, Kaede knew things were worse than she had thought. The girl seemed too sad to even speak. "Did Miroku really give you this much distress?" When Sango gave her a puzzled look, Kaede realized it wasn't about that any more. Something deeper…something much more hurtful. "Nay it can't be that. What's wrong Sango?"

"I-" Sango paused, looked for the words to say. "In-" She was afraid to tell Kaede what had happened. Panicked by the look Kaede was giving her, Sango blurted "Kagome went home. She will be back soon."

"It's so good being up before the sun. Getting to watch the sun rise has definitely got to be one of my favorite things." Mrs. Higurashi said aloud to herself.

She was sitting on the bench beside the great tree. Watching the sky become lighter. Waiting for the sun to peek out at her. She was wearing a light blue t-shirt, and a pair of white slacks. She hadn't even bothered with a pair of shoes; relishing in the feel of the grass, wet with morning dew, between her toes.

"Yes this is definitely the way to start the day!" She said, while stretching her arms out wide, toward the sky. As if she were embracing it within her outstretched arms.

The sky itself, slowly turning a shade of blue, was speckled with stars. The wind, warm to the touch, was bringing all kinds of sweet smells; toward the lounging woman. The smells of freshly blooming cheery blossoms was most alluring.

"Mmm… that brings back memories." Memories long suppressed. Memories of her husband and herself. Memories of the day Kagome was born.

Just then, Mrs. Higurashi heard a noise coming from the direction of the well. Standing up, she began to walk toward the well. The grass crinkling under her feet. When the door to the shrine opened, she saw her daughter. Standing there, with a look that would make the coldest heart weep.

"Kagome." She managed to say, before the teen ran down the steps and into her arms.

"Oh Mother! It's just so awful!" Kagome sobbed into her chest.

"There there dear. It'll be okay." She spoke, trying to calm her trembling daughter down.

"No it won't! It will never be okay again!"

Surprise showed on Kaede's face. "I see. Did she and Inu Yasha get into another fight?"

"Well." Sango squirmed at Kaede's inquiring expression. "I'm not sure where to start." Pausing again, searching for the words that eluded her, Sango was not able to meet Kaede's stare. "We were-"

"That's enough Sango!" Inu Yasha said, making Sango jump from the harshness in his tone. He had walked into the hut unnoticed, until he had spoken. "What happened last night well not be spoken of to anyone!"

"Inu Yasha what has gotten into you?" Kaede said worry creeping into her voice. "Has the sent of the medicine affected you this much?"

"That has finally worn off!" Inu Yasha practically spitted out the words. "I won't hear of anyone speaking anything that happened last night again!"

"Aye, it may have worn off. But I liked your attitude better before!" Kaede snapped back at him. "I don't know what has gotten into you, but you-"

"Kaede." Sango interrupted. "Inu Yasha is right. It's best not to speak of this just yet." Sango's face held a look of great pain at the decision. "What will you do now Inu Yasha?"

"Hmph. Don't you worry about that." Inu Yasha walked back out of the hut as he spoke. "I'll figure out how to make her understand." He squinted as the sun's new waves hit his eyes. Pain creping into his voice, he added: "I've just got to make her understand."
