`Notice me
Take my hand'
Kagome's hand was at her mouth, and her eyes glimmered with tears that threatened to spill out anytime. After all she had done for him, in the end, he still cared more about Kikyo than about her, even though the one who completed his precious Shikon no Tama was her. She touched the round jewel that hung on a necklace. It gave off purple and pink sparkles of light, and the power called to all the demons in the surrounding areas. Kagome kept it pure, from being corrupted with evil. As guardian of the jewel, this was her responsibility and also her destiny, one that she would never escape from. This was what she would do until her life ran out. It was her duty and one that she had willingly accepted. She had to do this, but couldn't she at least have a little happiness in her life? The way things were now, she would die of frustration and loneliness long before her time was due.
Inuyasha and Kikyo stood facing each other in the peaceful clearing, and Kikyo held out her hand to her former lover. Inuyasha was so enthralled by Kikyo that he didn't even realize Kagome's presence. Her heart shattering into a million pieces when Inuyasha took Kikyo's hand, Kagome turned to walk away. She froze when a twig snapped beneath her foot, mentally screaming at herself for being so careless. Kikyo, of course, had already known of her being there.
Inuyasha spun around, fangs bared and snarling. Kagome faced him squarely, her eyes glittering. Inuyasha instantly backed down, fearing the all-powerful `sit' command. “Kagome, I…” he tried to explain himself frantically. “Shut up!” Kagome screamed at him. “I hate you,” she muttered beneath her breath. He advanced a step. “Sit!” she ordered. He crashed to the ground and was knocked out.
Kikyo drew an arrow from the quiver on her back and aimed carefully. “Kagome, you will die here, and your soul will be mine once again,” Kikyo sneered. “As always, my dear Kikyo, conceited as usual.” Kagome's chocolate-colored eyes were cold and narrowed. “Is that so? It doesn't matter anymore, does it?” Kikyo shot her arrow, which glowed with the purifying power. Kagome threw up a hand. A shield formed around her, and rebounded the arrow, which buried itself in Kikyo's stomach. “Always and forever, you cause your own death, Kikyo. But this time… I will forgive you,” Kagome whispered.
“Kagome, you don't know how much I hate you,” Kikyo growled. Her eyes sparkled with barely hidden malice. Kagome smiled sadly. “Let's call this my last gift to you… and to Inuyasha. Remember me, Kikyo…” Kagome approached slowly. Kikyo was curled up in the ground. She couldn't bleed, the animated clay body had no blood.
Kagome reached out and plucked away the arrow, tossing it away. She put a hand to the cracks in the clay, closing it rapidly with raw energy. Kikyo struggled wildly, but Kagome held her down. She closed her eyes and her hand hovered over Kikyo's heart. Through her eyelids, she could see into Kikyo, and she looked for the heart. Amongst the clear pink, there was a huge stain of black, and that represented her hatred. Using her hand, which glowed, she wiped away the darkness. Kikyo fainted away into unconsciousness, and Kagome put her down gently. Bending down, she whispered something in Kikyo's ear. Inuyasha was still knocked out, and his flowing silver hair covered his face.
`Why are we
Strangers when
Our love is strong
Why carry on without me?'
Kagome returned to the village quickly, running at top speed. She reached her destination in minutes. She burst into Kaede's hut, where Sango and Shippo were. “Sango… Shippo…” Kagome panted out. “Kagome, what's wrong?” Sango asked in alarm. “Mama!” Shippo jumped onto her shoulder eagerly. Kagome ripped the jewel away from her neck. “Sango… keep the Shikon no Tama for me,” Kagome said, holding it out. “No,” Sango shook her head firmly. “I'm not coming back again,” Kagome warned. “Keep it. Call it… something to remember all of us by,” Sango said softly. The two friends, who were like sisters to each other, embraced. Sango began to cry. Kagome hugged Shippo hard, then passed him to Sango. Picking up her yellow backpack, she walked out of the door, leaving two crying people behind her.
Kagome looked around her one last time, taking in the scenery of the Warring States period, before jumping into the well that would take her home, away from the beautiful place that had managed to break her heart.
