InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Wind Beneath My Wings ❯ Oh, how the time goes by ( Chapter 2 )
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
To a casual passerby, the events that took place would only seem like an average day. The sun was shining, birds, singing, and all was peaceful in Inuyasha's forest. The river was clear and flowing, a soft breeze shifting through the air. One could almost fall asleep in the quiet and serene surroundings. It kinda makes you want to hang up a hammock between two shady trees and fall asleep. And that's exactly what Kagome was thinking of doing.
She stood at the door of her hut, yawned, and stretched her arms up over her head. It was a beautiful afternoon, and she had half a mind to make her mate string up a hammock. Not only was it good for relaxation, but it would be a nice excuse to cuddle, she believed. Smiling to herself, Kagome leaned against the doorframe casually, brown eyes shifting across the scenery. It was quiet and nice. She was glad, especially in times like these, that things had played out like they had. Naraku was dead, Kohaku's life was spared and everyone had settled down to marry and have families. She and Inuyasha were no exception. Sometimes she missed her friends, especially on days like this. She could almost imagine the old group sitting down together after a successful fight and having dinner. Back when they were all only young adults. Back when Shippo was a child.
Kagome couldn't help but chuckle lightly as she continued to survey the land Inuyasha had cleared for their home. It was really beautiful, out in the open, but not too far away from the village in case they needed anything. Most women, she knew, would be terrified to be living in the middle of the woods with no other families around but Kagome couldn't feel safer. It was true she'd grown wiser in the seventeen years that had past. Her face was still young and vibrant, her eyes as merry and her laugh as happy as they ever had been. She would be forever young; have an eternal life but outlive her friends. Ah, the woes of loving a hanyou.
A slight frown crossed her face. There was still one -- or rather, multiple -- problems. The jewel shards. Somehow, Naraku had managed to hide away most of them, Koga still had his, and even if they fused the jewel back together, how in the world would they get rid of it? It was still a mystery. but now was not time for that, for her thoughts instantly changed when she sensed the familiar aura of her hanyou husband as he approached, carrying a stack of firewood on his shoulder. He looked tired, and it was no surprise. He'd been out since sunrise, chopping wood. It was a new hobby for him, she supposed. A way to release adrenaline now that Naraku was dead. Luckily, most of the time it wore him out and she wouldn't have to worry about him doing anything incredibly stupid.
He must've caught her scent because he looked up, blinked and smiled as he approached. She felt a grin working its way across her lips as well as he leaned in for a short, chaste kiss. "Hey." he said warmly, and she reciprocated. "Hey, hon." He gave her a wink and moved towards the woodpile, still carrying what seemed like to be a rather heavy load. She instantly reached out for some of the wood to help lessen the weight, but scowled as her hand was pushed away. "No." he grunted and dropped the wood in a heap on the pile. She crossed her arms and glared at him. "Hey! I was just trying to help." He looked at her, eyes dancing with amusement and she felt her heart melt. He chuckled and swept her into his arms. "Well, both of us can't break our backs now, can we? Then who would make my Ramen?"
Kagome giggled as he nuzzled her cheek and she looped her arms around his neck. "No one I guess." He smirked and pulled back, kissing the tip of her nose. "Well we can't have that now can we?" She laughed aloud. "Of course not. You would be impossible." He opened his mouth and was about to answer when there was what sounded like a shout and the sound of a tree falling. Inuyasha instinctively pushed his mate behind him and his hand flew to Tetsusaiga's hilt. His eyes darted around, looking for any sign of danger.
The forest was still.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a snarling blur of black and purple shot past the couple and Inuyasha loosened his grip, standing straight and rolling his eyes. "Izayoi, now what-"
"Hey!"
Said blur skidded to a halt, dust and dirt flying everywhere, making Kagome groan. She'd only just finished sweeping the porch....
The blur had taken shape now, in fact taken a female shape. The young woman, who appeared to be about sixteen stood, arms crossed and eyebrows raised. She was wearing blue jeans, ripped at the knees, and a light purple shirt that said-- 'G[] F[]CK Y[][]RS[]LF ... Would you like to buy a vowel?' Black hair was pulled into a ponytail with a few loose strands sweeping into her eyes. She seemed to be a normal... MODERN girl, except for a few things. Her ebony bangs, she pushed roughly out of her narrowed eyes. Golden eyes. Velvety black dog ears twitched upon her head as a clawed hand clenched into a fist and she bit her lip in frustration, revealing a fang.
"Why is it that you always assume I'm overreacting??" she demanded of her father, anger flashing in her eyes. Inuyasha rolled his eyes. "Because you always do."
Izayoi growled. "I do not overre-- Aacck!!!" With a thud, a huge paw came crashing down where Izayoi was standing. Kagome let out a terrified yelp, fearful for her daughter, but Izayoi landed beside her. "It's okay, Mama." she soothed. "I'm way too fast for this bastard." Fear filled Kagome's eyes as she looked at her firstborn daughter. "But-"
The youkai after Izayoi, which happened to be a bear, turned around, obviously having noticed that it had not killed it's prey. Izayoi's ears perked up. "Chat later, Mama, gotta run." With that, she dashed away from her parents, leaping to once agian avoid deadly contact with the bear's claws. "Hup!" She landed with inhuman agility atop a tree branch, crossing her arms and smirking. Kagome would've laughed in a safer situation. She looks just like her father.
Speaking of Inuyasha, he had Tetsusaiga bared and ready, the lust of battle showing clearly in his eyes. "Okay, you stupid furball, it's time to die."
Izayoi's hand had also flown to a sword at her hip, though it was not easily seen by the normal passerby. It was slender and long, but deadly. Kenshuga, made from her father's fang. And more powerful than Tetsusaiga... or so she hoped to believe, even if it wasn't true. Ego, it ran in the family. With another deadly smirk she whipped it out. "I couldn't have said it better myself."
With a roar worthy of a full youkai, Izayoi lunged at the bear and slashed Kenshuga right across its heart. The bear let out a horrible wail, making Izayoi and Inuyasha flatten their ears in irritation at the loud sound. Slowly, blood pouring from the fatal wound on its chest, the bear fell to the ground, dead. Deftly, the young woman landed and sheathed her sword as the dust began to clear.
Kagome ran over to her daughter and pulled her into her arms, shaking with fear. "Oh, Izzy, you're okay! Oh my goodness!" Izayoi sighed but let her mother hug her tightly and wrapped her arms around her back. She was nearly two inches taller than the slender, petite human whom had given birth to her and she nearly chuckled in spite of that fact as she rested her chin on Kagome's head. "It's okay, Mama." she said soothingly, pulling back to smile brightly at her. "I'm fine."
Kagome nodded and wiped at her eyes, trying to rid herself of tears as she turned to Inuyasha and hugged him tightly as well. Her father was almost six inches taller than her mother and he kissed her head soothingly. "We're alright, koi." he murmured softly as he stroked her hair. Izayoi's ears perked up as her mother's muffled voice caught her attention. "I know, I just worry." Izayoi sighed slightly and she and her father shared a secret smile. Kagome always thought of everyone before herself. Izayoi dusted herself off a bit and sneezed. "Let's go inside then, eh?" she said with a smile, taking her mother by the arm. Kagome smiled at Inuyasha before letting her half-hanyou daughter lead her inside. "I have dinner made." Kagome said gently as Inuyasha followed, closing the door behind him. Instantly, as though nothing had happened, Kagome hurried into the kitchen and began bustling around, chattering incessantly about her day in the market.
Inuyasha chuckled to himself as he sat down on the couch he'd somehow managed to let Kagome convince him to drag back from her time through the well. He sighed, content to be home at long last and ran a hand through his hair, mindful of the ears. Izayoi perched on the arm beside him, obviously a bit tired too. Still, he was proud of his pup and he couldn't resist. As Izayoi's ears twitched, a sign she was listening intently to her mother, Inuyasha's arms snaked out and grabbed her, pulling her onto his lap and tickling her sides. "Oi!!"
He chuckled to himself as his teenage daughter struggled to get free and refrain from laughing. But the more she protested, the more he tickled until finally she submitted and laughed aloud. "Okay, okay you win!! Quiddit!!" He laughed himself and let her roll off and sit beside him, glaring at him with a hint of amusement in her golden eyes. Golden eyes she got from me. he thought proudly and ruffled her hair. But if it wasn't for the youkai traits and the eyes you couldn't tell. On her human nights she's the mirror image of her mother.
"I'm proud of you, pup." he said sincerely, ruffling her hair. She tried to remain indifferent, but he saw the smile twitch on her lips. 'Thanks, Dad." He grinned and was just about to answer when the door flew open again and a very disgruntled inu-half hanyou walked in. Inuyasha sighed. "What is it now, Tai," he asked, standing up and leaning against the kitchen wall to study his son. His daughter followed him but walked over and stood in the doorway, gazing at her brother intently.
It was easy to say that his son, Inutaisho, was... how do you say... anger. He had a lot of frustration inside of him that usually didn't show. On the outside, he seemed cool, calm and caring, but inside he was like a volcano. Too much pressure and he blew his stack. Inuyasha could tell that Izayoi sensed something was the matter too because she whined and her ears flattened as she moved to hug her big brother.
He pretty much ignored her except for a faint smile and a rub to her ears before sitting down at the table, where Kagome was setting out plates.
"Just the stupid villagers again." he grumbled, scratching the back of his head. Looking almost identical to Izayoi, his features were more distinctly pointed. He was a mirror image of Inuyasha, save for the dark ebony hair he had received from Kagome, which was currently tied back in a loose ponytail out of his face.
"Wanna talk about it, koinu?" Kagome teased, giving him a little nuzzle. He smiled half heartedly at his mother. "Naw, I'm okay. Just tired. I'm going to go ahead and hit the sack."
Kagome sighed. "Don't you want any Ramen?"
Without a word he shook his head, kissed his mother on the cheek, Izayoi on the head and nodded towards his father, before turning and heading up the steps and into his room. Kagome sighed and scraped his bowl of Ramen onto a plate and stuck it in the cold box. "He might change his mind." she said, as if to justify her actions. Inuyasha sighed inwardly, knowing he wouldn't.
Dinner past quickly, with Izayoi and Inuyasha slurping down the instant noodles. Kagome giggled at the two of them, eating her oden quietly with her chopsticks. While Izayoi still held her chopsticks and was using them whenever they came in handy, Inuaysha had completely abandoned the idea and was eating somewhat like a dog. This resulted in a moment where Izayoi said so, and this resulted in a growl and her remaining Ramen being stolen. Ready to fight for it back, but hit by a sudden wave of fatigue, Izayoi kissed her mother and her father and headed up to bed.
Kagome cleared the dishes away as Inuyasha sidled up behind her and planted a soft kiss on the mark on her collarbone. It was permanent, and a youkai sign that they were mated and married forever. With a smile she turned and kissed him gently, before pulling back and nudging his nose with her own.
"Let's go on up to bed, koinu." she said gently and he gave a yawn, silently agreeing with her. Tugging gently on his hand, she led her tired hanyou up to their bedroom and soon found herself under the covers and nestled in his warm embrace. "I love you, koishii." he whispered, kissing her temple. "I love to you." she whispered back and he sighed contendedly. Soon he was fast asleep, holding her from behind, his arm securely around her waist and his nose buried in her flowery ebony hair. She smiled to herself and closed her eyes, silently deciding that the hammock could wait until tomorrow.
