InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Wind Beneath My Wings ❯ The Woes of Being Human ( Chapter 4 )
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
Izayoi giggled and was just about to answer when her ears twitched and she spun around, hand flying to Kenshuga's hilt. She growled, pushing Linorah behind her protectively. The little girl yelped and clung to her nee chan. "W-What is it?""Quiet." she mumbled, eyes darting around. Something was coming. Something big.
For one, long moment the forest was completely silent and still. Linorah's breathing quickened slightly as the suspense frightened the young half hanyou even more than she already was. Suddenly, out of nowhere there was a terrifying screech and a loud crack, and that 'something' came barreling out of the forest. Even Izayoi's eyes widened with fear as the creature skidded to a halt in front of them. She gasped, looking up at what stood before her. A dragon youkai?? But I thought they were extinct!
Linorah's silver ears flattened behind her and she whimpered. "Nee-chan, what is that thing?"
Quickly, Izayoi's mind snapped back to reality and yanked Kenshuga out of its sheath. "Run for Papa." she whispered to her little sister, her eyes never leaving the dragon youkai in front of them. "Run as fast as you can and don't look back, not for anything. Got it?"
"But Nee-chan!"
"GOT IT??!"
Linorah whimpered again and gulped. "Hai." With that, the toddler let go of her death grip on Izayoi's leg and dashed off into the forest towards their home where her parents were, oblivious to the danger. Izayoi's eyes narrowed as the dragon's bloodthirsty red eyes fell upon her. Her teeth gritted. She knew she couldn't take it down on her own, but she'd fight to the death to protect her little sister. At least she could hold out until her father came.
Izayoi rested Kenshuga casually on her shoulder and smirked at her foe, portraying confidence when in reality she was terrified. She hoped the youkai wouldn't hear the rapid beating of her heart and sense her fear. "Hey, Scaley, how about you turn your ass around and leave? If you go quietly I'll spare your pathetic life."
The dragon exhaled loudly, sending tendrils of dark black smoke out of its nostrils as it glared at Izayoi. Ignoring her cocky statement, it simply chuckled and spoke in a loud, threatening voice that made Izayoi flatten her ears against the sheer volume of it. "Spawn of the miko and the hanyou. Where is the Shikon no Tama?"
Once again maintaining her cocky disposition, Izayoi puffed out her chest proudly and flexed the claws on her free hand. "Ha, so you've heard of me."
Red eyes narrowed as the dragon hissed, more smoke billowing from it's slightly parted jaws and nostrils. "Of course, who hasn't heard of the filthy scum that roams the land and claims to be nearly as powerful as the half breed Inuyasha himself? Popular, you may be, scum, but for being filthy and nothing more."
Izayoi merely grinned and leapt up into a nearby tree to get a better view of him. It didn't make much difference, however, seeing as he towered well over eight stories. "But see, you HAVE heard of me, and, I, however, have not heard of you. Now, if for some odd reason I were to give a damn, I might ask your name. I do hate fighting things without first knowing their name so later on I can brag about how easy they were to bring down. But in your case I think you'll be too easy and I don't think I'd like much to brag about killing you, I'd just embarass myself."
True, she was partially stalling, hoping if she talked long enough her dad would come back in time. Her eyes flickered to the setting sun and she cursed inwardly, wishing there was some way she could stop time. But slowly, irrevocably, the sun was sinking lower and the dragon, whom was throughly pissed off now, noticed her distress and merely laughed.
"It's just a facade, I should've known. Why so nervous? Are you about to turn into a snivelling human? Afraid that if you don't get away in time you'll only be that much easier to kill?"
Izayoi's teeth gritted and she growled. "I could kill you with no sword and one hand tied behind my back."
The dragon smirked. "But not if you're human."
That did it. With a feral snarl, Izayoi pushed off the tree branch straight for the youkai, swinging Kenshuga. The dragon, knowing it had succeeding in provoking her simply opened its mouth and spewed forth a great amount of deadly flames. Izayoi's mind barely had time to register what was happening. Golden eyes grew wide and could only stare helplessly as fire surrounded her and the force knocked her to the ground.
"Haha, surely the spawn of the 'great' Inuyasha would not falter so easily? You were easier to destroy than I thought, and you're not even human yet."
Stars spun before her as she lay panting on the ground, squeezing her eyes shut in an attempt to dull the pain. She could tell her left leg was broken but her youkai blood quickly hurried to mend it, pulling it back into place and working at the tendons, pulling them back together and smoothing them over. Soon the sharp pain was reduced to a dull ache and Izayoi stuck Kenshuga into the ground, using the sword as leverage to stand upright once again.
"H-Ha!" she managed, sounding a little shaken but confident as ever. "You think you can bring me down that easily? Well think again, bastard."
She could smell the dragon's surprise and uncertainty as she rose to her feet. "Wondering how I survived that?" she asked menacingly as the sun began to sink even lower and she cursed in her head. "I've got something to live for, people to love. I don't have time for this. Now die!!"
With that she raised her sword and let an attack smiliar to the Windscar fly, straight at the dragon. But, as she had hoped would NOT happen, the dragon's scales protected him and he merely laughed again as she gritted her teeth. Damn!
She jerked suddenly upright as a tingle and a pulse shot through her body. No... not now!! Horrified, golden eyes turned to the horizon and she gasped as the last rays of sun disappeared into inky blackness. No!! Not this night!! Papa, where are you?
She stiffened as her senses dulled, fangs and claws disappeared. Her hearing was severely muffled as her dog ears vanished, replaced on the sides of her head with weak human ears. Ebony hair stayed the same but golden eyes bled violet and she gritted blunt human teeth. Kenshuga grew heavy in her weak mortal grasp and she sunk to her knees, her leg breaking all over again.
She cried out in pain and shoved her sword tip first into the ground, holding it for support as she sank to her good knee and her hair slipped over her shoulder. She panted, eyes squeezed shut against the pain.
The dragon roared with laughter, taking a step forward so one foot with three sharp talons attached landed dangerously close to her still form. "This is much to easy, and I was hoping for some fun."
Determined, and feeliing the part of her father in her surge into control, Izayoi stood, now violet eyes blazing.
"I'm not that easy to knock off." she hissed shakily with a somewhat cocky smirk. "Bring it on you fucker, I'm not giving up."
The dragon's foot raised and attempted to swipe at her but Izayoi simply smirked and lifted Kenshuga's sheath to protect herself. Her modern gym shoes dug into the dirt as she struggled to stay upright against the powerful swing and the pain in her broken leg.
Finally the talons retreated and Izayoi smirked, lowering the sheath. "Ha, is that the best you can-"
A scream tore from Izayoi's throat as the dragon's spiked tail caught her across the chest. With a yelp, somewhat muffled by several obviously broken ribs, Izayoi felt herself flying backwards until she stopped abruptly. Pain seared through her entire body and now her head as she tried to push away the inky blackness consuming her vision.
N-No... Linorah... she's still... out there...
That was her last thought before the half hanyou slid down to the ground, unconcious.
