This isn't happening, this just can't be happening...Kagome thought urgently as she ran forward through the hazy purple mist surrounding her.
It hadn't taken very long at all, the battle with Naraku. Surprisingly, it was a simple weakness in him that sent the poor psuedo-hanyou to hell. Kikyou had fulfilled her duty, and filled the jewel, by taking Kohaku's life. That last piece completed the jewel, and the priestess had taken the last of her strength to take hold of Naraku's spirit, and purge it, dragging him down to hell with her.
Kagome had never understood what she did, except that she saw the look cast from the dead priestess to her hanyou, Inuyasha. It was a look of repentence, one of peace, as if to say, "This is what I want, I will finally be able to rest.." almost as if she were wishing him a good life?
In the end, it was Naraku's own drunken greed for power, and the death of Kikyou, the woman Onigumo lusted after, that lead him to his own demise.
But it was what came next, that had driven the groups world into complete disarray.
The completion of the jewel, yet destruction of it's predator, as well as the woman who had guarded it, left it in Kagome's hands, and soon as it settled in her hands, there had been a blinding flash of immeasurable light, sending the raven haired teen, and her companions into a world of darkness. Leading her, at this moment, to where she stood currently. Or more rather, ran.
She had no idea at all where she was, and had no clue where Inuyasha and the others were either, all she knew was this; there was darkness, light, mist, and voices, so many voices...
"Inuyasha!!" she called through the haziness, and all that came to her was the hollow echo of her own voice reverberating back at her, as if in mockery. "Inuyasha, where are you! Sango, Miroku, Shippou, please answer me!"
A flash of black light, followed by the sound of metal against metal drew Kagome's attention to her left, where she saw something she'd never forget.
Inuyasha, fighting side by side..the long dead priestess.. Midoriko. They were fending off a demon, one of thousands, that apparently were in this...place.
"Inuyasha!" she called out again, catching the ears of her companion, only he seemed different. He still had his outfit, and he was still a hanyou, but he seemed a bit less destructive than he could be. She couldn't quite explain it as she watched him turn to her.
Another blast of power caused Kagome to sheild her eyes, and when she could afford to open them again, there was nothing but mist again. Mist, Midoriko, and Inuyasha.
"Wha..." the question died on her lips as the miko-in-training watched Midoriko move from her spot next to Inuyasha and come towards her instead. "Where are we?"
"In the jewel," she said so simply it almost made Kagome feel ashamed to have asked, "you all, bear the traits of what have created the Shikon-no-Tama,"
"But I thought it was the-"
She was shushed by the elder woman who continued on, "Indeed, it was the combination of my soul and the demons I was battling, that inevitably created the base for the jewel, but it is that of the four souls, yuu (courage), shin (heart), chi (power), and ai (love), that drew the jewel's power together, combining the energy of my soul, as well as that of the demon, and spawned the birth of the Shikon-no-Tama so many years ago."
This silenced the girl, who glanced over at Inuyasha, who was staring right back at her.
"But why are we here?"
By this time, Inuyasha had moved closer and was now standing behind Midoriko, looking rather sullen. "You are here, because this is where, truly, your souls belong. However, this is where it gets complicated, originally it was my soul, that created the bondage for the jewel itself, hence the existence in the first place. You Kagome, are the bondage, like myself, as my reincarnation, ara- the spirit of yuu, is that of the half demon's soul-"
"Inuyasha.. I've heard this before, Izumo.."
"Kushi, spirit of chi, is that of Miroku's soul, the monk; Saki - spirit of ai, is that of your taijiya, Sango, and Nigi, spirit of Sin, is Shippou, the fox pup. Together, your souls, like Izumo said, could very easily create another jewel, stronger and more destructive than the rest." the explanation stopped there.
"The deal is, we're here to put a stop to the battle Kagome, to make the jewel disappear forever, set Midoriko's soul to rest, and to put things back in the right direction. " he said simply.
"And how do you know this?"
"Midoriko found me first, and told me everything, just like she told you. Only, Kagome, this is where I come in. I am not to battle, like you saw before, I was only defensive. I'm here at this moment, and still in my Hanyou form, because I am to make a wish."
"Kagome, it was always to be this way, Kikyou.. you, it was fate that you would meet Inuyasha. My wish upon creating the jewel, was that the proper balance of darkness and light, and that of the spirit of yuu would be able to over power the darkness within this jewel and dispurse it forever."
"You need to be here Kagome, with Inuyasha, for this moment."
For the moment she'd almost forgotten Shippou and the others, why weren't they there? Of course, as if to answer her unasked question, images of her friends, flashed through her mind, they were encased in a crystallized type object, in a slumber, but the feeling that went through her, was serenity. So, it was alright?
"I'm confused still... why do we have to-"
"Because, this was the way it was fated to be, you, the bonding soul, stand with Ara- spirit of yuu, and the wish is made. If the wish is that of purity, than the strength of your two combined souls will cleanse the darkness within this realm. Do not worry, you're friends will be okay." Midoriko said calmly, as if sensing the miko's fears.
"They're merely entrapped momentarily to harvest the strength of their souls. It's a delicate process..." she trailed off again, and then looked to Inuyasha with a serene smile.
He glanced at her, then at Kagome, as he took her hand, pulling her a little closer than before.
"Are you absolutely sure that the wish you will make, is the wish you truly want in your heart?" she asked him calmly, and he nodded, eyes shutting.
There was a distinct crackling of energy with his nod, and Kagome could have sworn she felt the world shift slightly.
"Very well, then let the process begin. Inuyasha, I beg of you, make the decision truest in your heart." Midoriko said and backed away from them, as a swirling vortex of light opened on the ground beneath them.
Shocked at first, Kagome looked down to find they were no longer on solid ground, though truth be told she was never sure if they were to begin with. At the moment they were on a sea of violet, touching the liquid, yet not touching it at all.
"Inuyasha, what..." her question faded when he pulled her in close, for a tender hug, which intensified as his grip strengthened. What exactly...is his wish?
The vague murmuring of voices started between them, and then she saw Midoriko, standing off to the side, hands clasped in prayer, a vortex of white light surrounding her. The prayer heard: "Yuu, Chi, Shin, Ai - yon no seishin wa ketsugou. (Souls of the four combined) The end draws near, the beginning of life..." her voice quieted and there was a burst of light again underneath them.
Kagome found herself clinging to Inuyasha's haori, only to look up and see his eyes shut, hands snaked around her head, as he too spoke in whispers, though, too low for her to hear.
Though in the end, she would regret never having heard the wish he made.
Because after he spoke, a shockwave slammed through her body, but she held tight, though noticed that everything surrounding them, lost their traits, the darkness and the evil air that clung to the ground, disappaited, and she watched also, as Midoriko smiled at them before her body disintigrated, leaving a sparkling dust to disappear with the second wave.
Eyes shutting she could again hear him mumbling, and knew he was repeating his wish, almost a mantra. She buried her face in the folds of his robes, tears trickling down her cheeks as she finally caught his words.
When the first step had been completed, and the jewel completely purified, all that was left, was the last step, the completition, the wish granting.
"Kagome..." he muttered once before his body glowed a blinding white and his hair flew around them, covering her in a blanket of silver as she felt a familiar warmth trickling upwards. That of a soul.
She felt his arms around her, but could no longer 'feel' him in the sense. He was fading.
And with another flash of light, she felt herself being slammed backwards, and into darkness.
-----------
When she awoke next, she was in a forest, on her knees, as the sun shone brightly through the branches of the trees around her.
Tears stained her face as she pushed herself up, and spotted him.
"Inuyasha?" she spoke gently, unsure of her voice as she stepped forward towards him, though he did not move.
Smiling at her lovingly, he stroked her cheek, when in reach, and again, though he was not real, she could feel the carress, and leaned closer to him, feeling very empty when his hand fell down to his side.
"Kagome," he started, and then paused, in that brief moment she expected an explaination of some kind, for the words to tumble from his mouth, for something. Anything but what she received.
He was no longer a hanyou, the loveable Hanyou she knew, he was a human, a blanket of obsidian surrounding him, and his violet eyes bore deep into her own.
He touched her hand, and brought it up to his heart, and pulled her close again, "I love you..." he said gently and her eyes widened, he leaned down slightly, and she shut her eyes, reaching up and their lips met in a momentarily eternal show of affection.
And as he kissed her, he faded, drifting like the wind through her hair, and when she opened her eyes...
He was gone.
I have been granted the chance to love again, the live and be free, my wish now, is for everything to be set straight, for everybody to live on...and for the power to protect the one I love forever more...
It echoed in her heart, as tears once again cascaded down her cheeks, as she slipped to her knees, glancing to the heavens above her through the canopy of the forest. No sound escaped her lips when she opened them to scream, all she could do was cry.
And that's what she did.
She lived on, but she cried. A little, every day...
