The worth of a friend

 

A/N: I'm not really one for complaining but come on people! I've had over 100 visits to my story and not one of you has left a review. It doesn't take long to write one, even if its just a few words I'll be happy. Come on, don't be so tight!

Chapter 5

 

On the road again after only a few hours of restless sleep Hoshiko was at the back of the group with her sister, chatting away quietly about the night before and where she and Sesshoumaru had gone off too.

 

“Went for a midnight tryst I see?” Kagome joked as she elbowed her in the ribs gently.

 

Feeling a dark blush creeping over her face Hoshiko tried not to splutter as she glared playfully back. “What! As if Kags. Every time the guy opens his mouth I get mad. How the hell does he do it?”

 

Chuckling Kagome chanced a glance to the front of the pack and looked at said taiyoukai, who was walking in front of Ah Un and Jaken. She could've sworn she saw his back stiffen slightly. Oh yeah, Sessy-poos has got something for my sis. I can't wait to watch him when he trains her. Speaking of which…

 

“Hey Hoshi, when's he going to start training you anyway? We've been travelling for a few days now and he hasn't took you aside yet.”

 

Snorting and crossing her arms Hoshiko just looked away, then to the front of the caravan when Sesshoumaru suddenly spoke.

 

“A wolf approaches us.”

 

Suddenly sensing two jewel shards she looked at her sister when she heard her anguished groan and the name `Kouga' muttered under her breath. Hearing someone approach them she turned and saw Inuyasha standing next to Kagome with a hand already on Tetsusaiga, waiting to draw.

 

“Hoshiko, better go stand with the others, I'll deal with the wolf.” Inuyasha growled out as a tornado appeared from the trees along the road, which swiftly dissipated to reveal a man dressed in pelts and wearing armour on his chest.

 

Not arguing Hoshiko did as she was told and went and stood beside Sango and Miroku, who both had expressions of worry on their faces. Remembering her sister mentioning about an avid wolf guy that wouldn't leave her alone she watched him intently, hoping he didn't make a foul of himself and leave just of quickly.

 

“What do you want Kouga?” Inuyasha growled out as he stood between the other male and his mate.

 

Crossing his arms and turning his nose up in the air Kouga started to walk around them, smirking when he saw the Inu follow his moves. “I've come to see my woman mutt face. So stand aside or I'll send you packing with your tail between your legs.”

 

“Kouga…”

 

Cutting his mate off by wrapping his arm around her waist he pulled her into his side as the other one pulled the collar of her shirt aside to show of his mating mark. “See this wolf, shows that she's no longer yours to have. She's my mate, so why don't you piss off before I start sharpening my claws on your smelly hide.”

 

Seeing that a fight was about to ensure Hoshiko grabbed hold of her sister when her mate released his grip of her and pulled Kagome out of harms way just as the enraged wolf and Inu leaped at each other. Holding her hand they all watched as the two battled it out, insults and fur flying as they swiped claws at each other. The fight didn't last long though, as when Kouga jumped again at Inuyasha in a rage he left himself too open for attack, and taking the advantage the hanyou kicked his unprotected left side, sending him flying into a tree with a loud crash. Going after him Inuyasha grabbed Kouga by the throat with one hand while the other poised the claws of the other before his shocked face.

 

“Do you yield to your better Kouga?” Inuyasha growled out lowly, his eyes flashing between gold and red, putting the wolf on edge with fear as he watched them with wide eyes.

 

Gasping for breath Kouga managed to ground out threw clenched teeth. “I submit. You win. But you better not hurt her mutt.”

 

Quickly releasing him Inuyasha didn't give him a second look as he turned and leapt over to where his mate stood waiting. And in a swifter move he snatched her from her sister and bounded off into the woods.

 

“What the…” Hoshiko got out as she watched the two disappear, and taking a step to go after them she was stopped in her tracks by a strong hand on her shoulder. Thinking it was Sango she was surprised when she looked behind her to see none other than the taiyoukai himself standing there, his gaze locked on the ookami prince as he watched him still sat where he fell with his head down sadly.

 

“Leave them. He needs to reaffirm himself as the miko's mate after the challenge by the wolf.” Sesshoumaru assured her, and then added. “They will be fine.” Before letting her go and turning away to address the rest of the group. “We will rest here until they return. Come wench!”

 

Starting at the nasty pet name he had quickly bestowed upon her the rattled teen turned and looked at him as he headed further down the hill they had all stopped on and towards a grassy field at the bottom on one side of the road. Looking to the others who all just shrugged she quickly followed him. Coming to a halt a few feet away from him she watch as the light wind ruffled his silk clothing and long hair.

 

“Remove your pack girl and come closer, you will not be needing it in your first lesson.” Sesshoumaru spoke, breaking the long silence that was stretching between them.

 

Lesson! Oh, so now he's finally decided to train me.

 

Doing as she was told for once she let her backpack drop to the ground behind her. Walking closer to him she stopped about two arm lengths away and waited patiently for him to continue.

 

Feeling pleased that she wasn't questioning him and following his instructions Sesshoumaru carried on. “You do have some control over your powers, that I will admit, but it is very little. I will help you strengthen it and your sword skills. I do not trust you sparring with the taijin with the way you let yourself be ruled by your emotions.”

 

Realising he was referring to yesterday when she calmed herself down during their last argument Hoshiko nodded her head in understanding. “So how will you help me strengthen my control?”

 

Chuckling the taiyoukai suddenly appeared by her side and breathed threateningly down her neck and in her ear. “I will engage you in a fight until your powers reach a peak, then I will demand that you reel them in of your own accord before any damage is done. Understood?”

 

Snapping her head and backing away she felt one hand drop to her moon dagger strapped to her hip automatically in response, and resisted the urge to rub her arms as they broke out in chills from his youkai brushing so suddenly against her aura. Forcing her hand away from her weapon she clenched her fist and glowed back at his smug looking face, and remembering her promise to herself that she'd show him she tapped into a little bit of her power, and chucked it straight back at him.

 

Feeling his skin crawl and tighten when her aura lashed out at his in retaliation Sesshoumaru had to smirk when he realised that Hoshiko was doing this all by herself, and not letting her emotions control and unleash it on him.

 

“Very good little one. You will refrain from using any weapons in this lesson. Now, come at me!” Sesshoumaru ordered with his hand out to the side.

 

Come at him, with what? Oh right, hand to hand. Heh, good think I know how to punch properly. Though I wish I took those judo lessons with my friends back home.

 

Seeing where her thoughts were going she swiftly shook her head to clear them, and seeing that the taiyoukai was still stood there waiting for her she ran at him, aiming a right punch for his smug looking face, which he easily blocked with the back of his hand. Before she could retract it his long fingers hand grasped her wrist tightly before with a strong pull he flipped her onto her back, where she lay a little dazed looking up at him.

 

“Be aware of your opponent at all times girl, never leave yourself open to attack.”

 

Glaring up at him Hoshiko rolled away from him and to her feet. “This is ridiculous Sesshoumaru! How am I supposed to attack you when I don't know anything about fighting form?” Before she could rant any further the taiyoukai had a firm grasp of her neck and had lifted her slightly into the air.

 

“You dare question this Sesshoumaru's methods wench?” He seethed. I may have some feeling for her but I will not have her question me like this. She will have to learn. “Fighting form as you so put it comes instinctively, and once you have found yours then we can build up on it.” Letting go of his hold on her he turned his back on the girl that slumped to the ground and walked away, taking up his last position from before. “Now, come at me and don't stop until I tell you to do otherwise.”

 

Feeling a little fear from his sudden attack on her but feeling surprised that he hadn't hurt her Hoshiko got to her feet again, her mind tumbling over his words as she edged closer to him. Realising that she had gone a little too far with him this time she attacked, her right punch aimed for his left shoulder this time, and learning from before she quickly snatched it back and hit with her left at his stomach. As the minutes passed by she would incorporate kicks into her attacks on him, all being blocked by his single hand or a raised knee. Getting a little more bolder she managed to flip behind him and deliver her version of a roundhouse kick, which successfully nicked his side as he turned away from it. Rolling out of the way when his arm raised up to backhand her Hoshiko could feel her power rising, and witnessed it when she punched out again and saw that her arm was glowing with a white hue.

 

Seeing and feeling her power was rising Sesshoumaru barked out his next command as he jumped out of her reach. “Stop girl and pull your power in until I can no longer see your aura around you. Then come at me again.”

 

Panting from the exertion she stopped and did as she was told. Sensing it was at a comfortable level she went after him again, but noticed that her speed had increased a little more even though she was in control.

 

An hour later of repeating this found the pink haired girl knelt on the grass as she gasped to catch her breath. Wiping sweat from her brow she looked over at her new sensei and caught a glimpse of a small smile on his face before it slipped away.

 

Is he amused by my actions or what?

 

“You have done well for your first lesson. That will be all for today.” Sesshoumaru informed her as he headed her way. Stopping beside her he looked up the hill at the others that had gathered to watch and could see that his brother and his mate had returned. Not looking at her he added `rest here awhile' before strolling quietly up the hill.

 

God what a slave driver! But he is kinda sexy when he scowls like that. WHAT!!!

 

Sitting up very straight Hoshiko knew her eyes were as wide as saucers as she realised just what she had thought of the taiyoukai. Pursing her lips as she looked down at her hands in her lap she pondered over why she suddenly thought Sesshoumaru as sexy, and why the thought was bothering her.

 

I feel like a little girl that's realised she has a crush on the boy next door! Wait…oh god. Hoshiko, what have you gotten yourself into this time! Sigh, no wonder he's been getting me mad. I've been unconsciously letting him get to me on purpose. I have a really twisted mind.

 

Too wrapped up in her thoughts she didn't notice that her sister and Sango had suddenly joined her until Kagome pushed her over.

 

“Earth to Hoshiko, come in Hoshi!” Kagome giggled as she watched her sister right herself and cast her a playful glare.

 

“Are you alright Hoshiko? Sesshoumaru didn't hurt you, did he?” Sango asked worriedly as she carefully looked the young girl over for any injuries.

 

“No Sango, I'm fine, just a little tired.” Hoshiko replied before getting to her feet as the rest of the group came towards them. “Are we leaving now?”

 

“Its still light, and we have only been travelling for a few hours, so we might as well continue on.” Inuyasha replied before taking up the lead of the group as he walked back onto the dirt road.

 

Together again they all headed out on the trail of more jewel shards and hints of where Naraku had gotten too.

 

Walking between her sister and Sango Hoshiko suddenly looked back as she remembered about the ookami that battled Inuyasha earlier. “Hey, what happened to Kouga?”

 

“After you followed Sesshoumaru Kouga joined the rest of us and watched you train. He was very curious about you Hoshiko. He said he was surprised that someone from the clan of the moon was still alive, and actually needed training by Sesshoumaru.” Sango answered thoughtfully.

 

Suddenly having a flash back to watching the demon Mikal berating Kaffifi she quickly looked around the group for the wolf. “Where is he?”

 

Looking at her sisters pale face Kagome quickly held onto her arm when she suddenly swayed on her feet. “Kouga went back to the rest of his pack, from what Sango told me. Hoshi, what's wrong?” And why do you want to know where Kouga is all of a sudden?

 

Sensing someone coming up behind them both Kagome and Sango turned round and saw Sesshoumaru with Ah Un in tow. They both quickly latched onto the girl between them when the taiyoukai suddenly reached for the still unsteady Hoshiko.

 

“The girl is tired.” Sesshoumaru stated as he looked at the two blankly. Pulling Ah Un closer by his reins he instructed the two women to remove the girls pack, before lifting her up and placing her on the two-headed dragon. “She will ride on Ah Un until I deem otherwise.”

 

Holding onto her sisters pack Kagome nodded her head in understanding then watched closely as Hoshiko slumped forward on the beast. Running to her side she quickly checked her over and sighed in relief when she noted that the girl had only fallen asleep. Walking behind Ah Un where Rin and Shippo was she kept looking from Hoshiko and Sesshoumaru, and could see the taiyoukai's aura expanding to brush warmly over her sisters sleeping form.

 

Smiling knowingly to herself Kagome distracted her mind by talking to the two children she was walking beside, all the while wondering if Hoshiko knew how much Sesshoumaru liked her.

 

Only time will tell.

Somewhere Naraku sat as he watched the group of shard hunters through Kanna's mirror, his lips forming into a smirk as his eyes latched onto the sleeping form of Hoshiko. Done with his observation the dark hanyou sent the albino child away with orders to find her sister Kagura. Leaning against the stonewall of the cave he rested in Naraku smiled devishly as his twisted mind thought up his next plan of action.

 

It appears that this Hoshiko is somewhat descended from the warriors of the moon that the demon Mikal supposedly wiped out some time ago. Hmmm, this could prove most pleasing. I think it is time I resurrect some old enemies.

 

Cackling darkly to himself Naraku slowly disappeared from site, melding with the shadows around him until all that was left was the lingering sound of his deep laughter.
