These Knots We Tie
Chapter 2: Eyes Ablaze
-------
Here he was, walking again. Well, of course he was walking again. Where did the notion come from that he might stop here? Something about his hair was wrong apparently. Unless that girl was lying to him. Women were untrustworthy. He had learned that personally.
The streets were fairly empty, except for the occasional man or woman walking by. He noticed that every single one of these people had black hair. What was going on here?
Ignoring the odd looks he was getting, he walked straight, head held high. One man sneered distastefully at him, but he ignored it. Now wasn’t the time to let loose his temper.
A pair of young boys gawked at him as he calmly walked past. The youngest threw his little rubber ball at him before joining in a fit of laughter with his friend. Apparently SOMETHING wasn’t wrong here, HE was wrong here. He picked up his pace and hardened his heart even more to the world.
A good fifteen minutes later, he felt a change in the atmosphere. There were no more glares, no more surprised expressions, and there was no more hate. The black haired townspeople barely paid attention to him. Had he done something?
Before he could inquire, an old woman bumped into him. Both quickly slurred out a “Sorry” without meeting each others eyes. When the stranger was behind him a ways, he looked back. Suddenly, without knowing why, he was running back after the woman. Then it hit him; the woman was older, with long graying hair. He had only seen people with black hair so far. Perhaps he could find some answers.
---
Kagome sighed absently. The smallest glimmer of light was still visible on the horizon. She wondered whether that boy had found a safe place to stay for the night. She shook her head, trying to clear it of these thoughts. It didn’t matter if he hadn’t, she should hate him. She should hate all the silver hairs, for her parents’ sake. Maybe, if she didn’t think about it, she could convince herself once more that she did indeed hate him.
But there was something strange about him. His read haori clad figure seemed to dance through her mind, ever since she had made him leave. Perhaps she could have let him stay the night? Or at least she could have explained about this town, he didn’t seem to be from around here. Although she had never heard of a silver hair coming from anywhere else. He was definitely strange.
This town did look peaceful from the outside though. She should have warned him of the bitter hatred lying underneath the calm exterior.
---
After explaining himself to the woman, he now found himself being led towards a small house a few blocks away. However friendly this lady seemed, he reminded himself mentally not to trust anyone. Everyone only cares about themselves. That’s how his world had always worked.
“Hey boy, what’s your name anyway?” It took him a moment to realize the stranger was talking to him.
“It’s......Inuyasha. What’s yours?” Inuyasha hated giving out his name. No one really used it back home.
The stranger smiled. “Pleased to meet you Inuyasha. My name is Kaede. I know everyone in the Inner Circle, but I have never seen you before. I think you have a story to tell me.”
---
After reluctantly telling Kaede how he had been traveling for several days, she seemed troubled. He asked her what was wrong.
“I didn’t think there were silver hairs outside this town. It is something to think about. Anyway, why were you leaving your home?” After seeing Inuyasha’s downcast look, she changed her question. “Do you understand about this town yet, or would you like to hear the story?”
Inuyasha nodded and she began.
“First of all, you may have noticed that there are two different sections to this town. There is the Inner Circle, where we are now, and there is the Outer Fringe. No one really remembers when this town changed like that, or even why. All we do know is that the black hairs hate us.”
“It has been fifty years since this conflict began. We don’t know what began it, but somehow a rift formed between those with black hair, and those without. They call us the silver hairs, but you’ll soon find that there are many of us with brown hair, gray hair, and even a few with blonde hair. We even have some black hairs among us, people who hate the separation in this town. When I was younger my hair was black, so technically I could go live with the Outer people, but I refuse to do so.”
“Their territory is much larger than ours, but we are forbidden to step outside the Inner Circle. They believe that they are completely superior to us, and it has been this way for a long time now.”
Inuyasha swallowed this slowly. This did explain why the girl had said what she said. It made absolute sense. But he hated it. It was his mother all over again. But something about it appealed to him......It was possible, just maybe, that he could make friends here with people who are like him. He wouldn’t be alone anymore. He wanted that so bad.
With Kaede’s eyes following him, he stepped outside the house they had been talking in. Sure enough, the dirt road was in a small circle with all the houses facing inward. Beyond this circle, there were so houses facing every which way. Past the in between houses he saw even more houses in a large circle. What an odd town. He must not have noticed that the road he had chosen had taken him directly to the middle of the circle.
Kaede was beside him again. He turned to face her and his eyes seemed to be afire. He felt like talking to that girl again and asking why she hated black hairs. He hated it, hated how people could hate others like this. It wasn’t right.
She was talking again. He tuned back in to her voice. “And those in between the two circles don’t mind us. There aren’t too many like them though. Most people choose sides. The ones in between let us go into their territory a bit though, so we are slowly explanding. This is worrying the black hairs. They are afraid we will take over.”
Inuyasha was only half listening now. Under the dark night sky with the street lamps burning steadily nearby, he only knew one thing. He wanted to talk to that girl again. She had to know that something wasn’t right. THIS wasn’t right. In his mind, it was becoming his personal goal to change just one person’s mind on this whole situation.
He quietly accepted Kaede’s offer to spend the night at her house. In the morning, she promised, he would get to meet more of the Inner Circle.
-------
A/N: Yeah, I know, not too much action yet. I had to let poor Inuyasha understand what was happening though, or not too much would happen. He might have left if he didn’t find out, and then where would our story be?
Thanks again to the reviewers. I’ll try and answer questions and whatnot in the beginning of each chapter. Hopefully I’ll be able to get more into Inuyasha’s past at some point. But we shall see! I’m trying to guess how long this fic will be, and I’m really really unsure. Something tells me maybe ten chapters. I lose my attention span after writing a 4 page chapter, so I’m afraid I won’t be able to make these too much longer. I’ll try though!
Cheers!
