CHAPTER 2: Jewel to Sparkle

Inuyasha stealthily leapt from rooftop to rooftop, he didn't think that this job was such good idea, especially with those so-called `rumours' going around. Besides, if this jewel was so powerful then why was it still lying around in a heap of rubble?

*****Flashback******
Inuyasha, sneezed and coughed, “God, Miroku you really have to clean this cupboard out, all this dust is getting up my nose” he spluttered between coughs and sneezes. “Ah, yes' said Miroku thoughtfully “ You and your precious nose, don't worry, what I tell you will be well worth it”.
“Oh yeah?” replied Inuyasha, dubiously. Miroku only sighed and said,
“Inuyasha, have you ever heard of the Shikon no Tama?”
“The Shikon no Whatta?”. Miroku again sighed disapprovingly, but began to explain.
“The Shikon no Tama is an ancient jewel, said to hold magnificent powers, surpassing all comprehension ”
“huh? What kind of powers?”.

“Well it's believed that the jewel represents the conflict in all our hearts; the battle between doing what's right or wrong. Like our own hearts the jewel's power can be swayed to either purity or malice, depending on its keeper's deepest desires and true intentions” said Miroku seriously.
“So the stupid rock can tell whether a person is good or evil so wha-”
“Its not the only thing it can do” interrupted Miroku “ It is said that the Shikon no Tama will grant its keeper whatever they wish, with no boundaries or limitations. I also heard that it grants great power to those who simply possess it”. Inuyasha became thoughtful for a moment. “I take it you want me steal so you can sell it, right?” he asked.
“Of course, why else would I have brought it up?” replied Miroku.
“Hmmmmm, okay…where can I find it?”
“Do you know the abandoned castle ruins on the outskirts of the city?”
“Umm, yeah, you mean that `haunted' pile of rubble”
“Yes, well If you dig around for it, it should be ther-“
“Now wait just a minute!” Interrupted Inuyasha “If this Shikon no Tama thing is so bloody amazing and powerful, what's it doing lying around in a pile of trash unguarded”
“Ah, yes. I was just about to mention that, you see Inuyasha, the jewel is believed to be cursed, many have tried to retrieve it but they all meet terrible fates” Miroku suddenly grew deathly serious “listen to me Inuyasha, when you find the jewel. DO NOT use it on yourself, I'm being absolutely serious, now. Before stealing it empty your mind of all wants and desires. My intuition tells me that no matter how powerful the jewel is and no matter what you wish there is ALWAYS a catch.” Inuyasha noddly grimly to show he understood, “Fine, I will go after the jewel tonight. Once I find it I will bring it straight to you”. Inuyasha sat up and walked towards the doors, “Wait, before you go Inuyasha,” said Miroku, “ Be on your guard, I've heard some rumours of a strange and new band of travellers in town, they are said to be both crafty and powerful. So remember to watch your back”.
“Keh, nothing I can't handle Miroku” said Inuyasha, grinning and cracking his knuckles. “Inuyasha! you don't need to pull that `tough guy' routine on me. I mean they might be after the jewel”
“Whatever, Miroku. I'll bring your stupid rock”.

**************End flashback********************

As he neared the castle grounds he sniffed the air and choked in surprise. It was the same scent from the night before…. from that Kagome girl. *Wait she's here? What the hell!*. He soundlessly crouched on the roof opposite the castle gates. There she was, alert, tensed up, hiding skilfully in the shadows. *No way* he thought to himself * This Kagome is acting like some sort of pro*. He smirked “As if! “ he whispered. The smirk soon faded as he saw her begin to reach for an arrow, her eyes resting on the exact spot he was sitting * How did she know I was here!! She can't see in the dark or smell me! She's just a pathetic human!*. Not knowing what else to do he leapt down quickly and grabbed her throat.

“KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!” she squealed.
“Just WHAT do you think YOU are doing here?” Inuyasha hissed “ And keep it down or do you plan on waking the entire town?”.It was then that Kagome noticed a silver ring on his middle finger, it had some kanji on it but she couldn't quite make it out. It also seemed his grip on her throat was quite loose and wasn't meant to harm, she grabbed his hand and pulled it off her. “Well! If you hadn't scared me I might not have screamed!”.
“Keh! Not my problem bitch. Besides, you didn't `scream' you squealed….like a fat piglet!” He said, smirking.
“I do NOT `squeal'!” she said primly.
“Whatever, wench. You can deny it all you want but-.“
“Whats with you and calling me wench! I have a name you know!” She interrupted.
“But I prefer calling you wench….wench” it was as though the smirk permantly plastered on his face at this point. “I said, I have a name!” said Kagome, irritably “its Kagome, say it with me now KA-GO-ME-“.
“ Don't patronize me wench, I know what your name is already”. Kagome immediately looked confused, “huh?” she said intelligently.

“Well…you see the truth is” he paused, “I'm…. psychic” he said sarcastically feigning mystery. She rolled her eyes and growled in frustration.
“Keh! You call that a growl” Inuyasha said laughing” Let me demonstrate how one is suppose to do it” he growled , just like a dog. Kagome stared, completely captivated. The moonlight glinted off his hair at the slightest movement and he almost seemed to glow, his eyes were amber- *no, they were gold* she thought, sparkling with alertness and keen intelligence. His puppy ears seemed to be aware of every sound and twitched cutely every now and then. Her eyes unconsciously traced his jaw line, resting on his chin then moving upwards and settling on his lips - *oh.my.GOD* she mentally slapped herself *What's wrong with me?!* she quickly looked away, praying to whatever god there was that the darkness would hide her blushing cheeks.

Inuyasha watched as Kagome quickly look away suddenly after he growled and stare at the ground. He realized that he probably scared her, or worse…disgusted her.* Well, revulsion is usually people's first reaction when they realize what I am, why should she be any different?* he thought sadly.

He turned away and said softly, “ So…what are doing here anyway?” Kagome flinched at his sudden change in tone, it almost sounded as if he was…sad? “Well, I came here to look for this jewel in that ruined mansion” she said, pointing at the ominous gates in front of them *What! Why did I just tell him that!!* she thought slapping her hand over her mouth. “Let me guess” sighed Inuyasha “Its called the Shikon no Tama?”.
“Yeah- Wait! How did you know?” asked Kagome. Inuyasha looked at her seriously “Jeez, I thought I told you” he paused,” I'm psychic” he said. Kagome couldn't help but smile in spite of herself. Inuyasha watched and his stomach did a peculiar flip-flop.

“The truth is I plan to steal it” He said.
“Oh no you don't! I was here first…so you better back off!” Kagome said, starting another argument.
“And what if I say no” he said venomously.
“Go, NOW! Or else!”
“Or else what?”
“ Or else I don't wanna have to hurt you” she threatened. Inuyasha burst into laughter.
“Your funny!” he spluttered between laughs “ YOU really think you can hurt ME? I'm a half demon, remember”. Kagome watched, seething as he began to calm down.
“Oi! Don't take me lightly! I swear, I'll make you into a Hanyou pin-cushion” she said angrily, echoing Shippou's words. Inuyasha looked at her as she gripped her bow tighter, but the look in her eyes was hesitant. *She meant what she said just now* he thought, * She doesn't want to hurt me*. As annoying as she was Inuyasha knew he didn't want to harm her either, but…
“I guess we have no choice but to fight over it then…” he said. Kagome look pained for a second,
“Wait!” she said, and “I have a better idea; Why don't we work together and then we can split the profit, you can have 70 percent and I'll get 30 percent…how's that sound?” He blinked, shocked at her generosity, but then again…
“Nope, sorry, no can do” he flinched at her upset, and maybe frightful expression. *Oh, no…* thought Kagome, she REALLY didn't want to have fight the hanyou, she didn't know why exactly because he had been nothing except rude to her. She sighed and was about to say something when he suddenly spoke, “Okay wench, I'll tell you what. We can work together to get the jewel, after we get it we can decide who gets to keep it or sell it, okay?” She smiled in relief. “Okay…” She said.

“Okay” he repeated and crouched down slightly “ get on”. Kagome looked confused, “Ummm, what do you mean?” she asked nervously. Inuyasha sighed in frustration, “I'm not gonna wait for you to haul your pathetic human ass over that gate, by the time you get over the sun will have risen” he said. Kagome bit her lip, he was right, that gate did look awfully high. Kagome asked nervously “but how?” Inuyasha sweat-dropped,
“Didn't anyone ever play piggy back rides with you when you were little?” he asked.
“Ummm. N-no' she stuttered back, and stared at the ground, suddenly looking slightly embarrassed. *Keh, what does she have to be ashamed about?* then he remembered how, when he was still a pup, he would watch the other kids play, he remembered how he knew that if he tried to join in they would run away or throw stones at him. He felt his chest constrict slightly and felt a flicker of something unfamiliar. Unfortunately Kagome still had her head bowed so she didn't see the brief look of understanding he gave her, but as quickly as it came his expression disappeared “ Come here Kagome, “ he said patiently,” I'll show you”. She looked up quickly, and gaped at him. It was the first time he had actually used her name, then it hit her,” Hey! I just realized something!” she said suddenly.
“ What?”
“You haven't even told me your name”
“ Keh! Maybe later” he replied, “Now, put your arms around my neck” he said, turning around and crouching down again. Kagome was glad it was dark and he couldn't see her blush, and he was also facing the other direction. She laced her arms around his neck.
“okay, hold tight and don't let go” he said.
He gripped her thighs and Kagome fought the urge to slap his hands away. Inuyasha arbruptly hoisted her up by her legs and brought her body forward to rest against his back. Kagome `eeeeeped' at the contact, she was now beet-red . Inuyasha just smirked at her reaction.

He turned around and began to jog down one of the side streets. “Umm, what are you doing? You're going in the opposite direction”. Kagome asked, leaning closer into him. He noticed that he was now completely engulfed in her scent and almost stumbled. * I'm over-reacting” he thought, *she doesn't smell that great*.
“Oi! Dog-boy!” Kagome said, wrenching him from his thoughts.
“Dog-boy?” he asked incredulously.
“Well, since you don't want to tell me your real name-“ she stopped mid sentence as he stopped as well and turned around to face the gate again, which was now an odd hundred metres away. “Wh-What are we d-doing?” she stuttered, but she had a pretty good idea.
“Isn't it obvious?” asked Inuyasha” We're taking a run up..”
“oh.” She managed to squeak weakly.
“You have to understand” continued Inuyasha, “ Normally I wouldn't need to, but now I have to take a run up since I'm carrying all this errrm, extra weight” He accentuated the last couple words, especially the `extra'.
“Oi! Watch it Dog-boy! What are you trying to say?! I'm not heavy!”
“Keh!” he said, but then grew serious “Now listen wench, Hold on as tight as you can, okay? I can't have you falling off in mid-air”.
“okay” she squeaked again.
“ready?” he asked
“Yip” she lied.

Inuyasha leant forward slightly, adjusting the weight,. Kagome felt the muscles beneath her ripple as he tensed. Suddenly, He lunged forward and went into a sprint. Kagome squealed at the speed at which they were going. She couldn't take it anymore, she leant forward closing her eyes, tightening her grip around his neck slightly and buried her face in his hair in the crook of his neck.

She all of a sudden felt a jolt…and then nothing except for the wind in her hair. She chanced a peek and had to catch a breath, it seemed as though they were floating above the city like a cloud, quiet and calm. From so that high she could see all around her and she glanced at the sleeping city. She loosen her grasp and threw her head back, her hair whipped around her but she didn't care, she let out a carefree, euphoric laugh that rang through the night air like music, Inuyasha allowed himself to grin like an idiot.

They started to descend and Kagome, once more, tightened her grip. There was a muffled `thump' as they landed surprisingly softly. Both of them were silent (for once) but after a few seconds Inuyasha let go and let her slide delicately off him onto the ground. He turned around and looked at Kagome, who was glad she could stand (her legs felt a bit wobbly after what had just happened). There was a buzzing sound behind him but before he could turn around-
“Inuyasha” Kagome blurted out. Inuyasha looked at her as though she too had dog-ears.” Your name's Inuyasha, isn't it?” she whispered.
“How did you….?” he asked trailing off. Kagome just glanced quickly at his ring rereading his name. She smiled at him mischievously and winked, “I'm psychic”…
