Chapter Twelve

Much to Inuyasha's dismay, Kagome intentionally avoided him the rest of the day. Inuyasha tried persistently to explain himself to Kagome, but she would have none of it. She acted like he simply didn't exist, and that was what hurt most. Kagome didn't scream at him, nor did she give him any indication that she was upset; rather, she simply ignored him. If Kagome was purposely trying to hurt him the way he had seemingly hurt her, she had certainly succeeded, only the mental anguish Inuyasha was experiencing now was ten times more painful. He hadn't felt so utterly vulnerable since he had broken up with Kikyo, and it was certainly a feeling he'd rather not experience again.

`What did I do to deserve this?' Inuyasha thought dejectedly. `It's not like I cheated on her.'

At first, Inuyasha thought Kagome simply overreacted. He hadn't actually done anything to invoke her wrath. He figured what happened had happened a long time ago, far before he ever even laid eyes on Kagome. If Kagome had been mad at Inuyasha for not telling her about his past relationship with Sango, that was another issue. Regardless, Inuyasha would have told her when the time was right. They only went on one date for Kami's sake! The more he thought about it, however, the more he realized how Kagome must have been feeling when she discovered he and Sango had a history together. Inuyasha tried to walk in her shoes for just a moment but couldn't find the mental strength to do it. If Kagome had told him that she slept with her last boyfriend, Inuyasha supposed he would have reacted in a similar fashion. Inuyasha only hoped Kagome would let him explain. Perhaps then she would understand.

When his Calculus class was dismissed, Inuyasha wanted to go after Kagome again but decided against it. Maybe she was right. Maybe there had been too much drama for one day, at least enough to make his head spin. The fact that Kikyo had made her untimely return into his life didn't help matters either. Inuyasha spared one final glance at Kagome before he left for home. He needed to think.

***********

Despite the calm and collected countenance her face displayed, Kagome's thoughts and emotions were quite flustered. For starters, Inuyasha's ex-girlfriend had returned out of the blue. Add in the fact that Sango had slept with Inuyasha and Kagome simply went nuts. She was vaguely aware that Inuyasha had relentlessly tried to explain himself to her because she was so lost in her own thoughts. Initially, Kagome felt devastated that Inuyasha had a sexual history with someone, let alone with Sango. She wanted to be his first, and hopefully, his only. The knowledge that Sango had slept with him obliterated that aspiration. Then another thought occurred to her. Had Inuyasha also slept with Kikyo? That thought saddened her even more, if that was possible.

`What was I thinking?' Kagome inwardly scolded herself. `I'm such a fool!'

When Kagome had fallen for Inuyasha, a part of her had always hoped that he was meant only for her and no one else. The past week was so utterly perfect that she didn't think anything could ruin the fairy-tale relationship that she and Inuyasha shared. Enter Kikyo, and her relationship with Inuyasha suddenly seemed threatened, if not by Kikyo then by the state of mental instability that her mind was in at the moment. As she pondered on about the events of the day, Kagome realized she might have just jumped to conclusions. She left abruptly after discovering the disturbing truth from Sango, and she didn't even give Inuyasha a chance to explain himself. Kagome wasn't sure she was ready to hear what he had to say, yet, she owed him that much. Perhaps his explanation would put her mind at ease.

Kagome was so consumed by her thoughts that she barely realized class was over for the day. She searched for Inuyasha in the crowd of students who were currently trying to get through the front door. However, Inuyasha was nowhere in sight. Sighing despondently, Kagome headed for home. She needed to think.

***********

A day off from school, and life, was certainly what Inuyasha needed. He didn't get much sleep the night before; his mind was too preoccupied with thoughts of Kagome and their relationship. He desperately wanted to see her again, desperately wanted to hold her in his arms, and desperately wanted to kiss her sweet, tender lips. Did Kagome feel the same way he did? Was she still upset? Inuyasha didn't have answers to those questions, but he no longer felt content in staying at home and reflecting on events that he could not change. Instead, he opted to visit her house in hopes for a chance at an explanation.

***********

Kagome didn't get much sleep either, mostly because of her erotic dreams of Inuyasha. It seemed as if Kami personally hated her because her dreams left her so unsatisfied. She needed Inuyasha's touch so badly it almost hurt. To think it had only been a week since they first met bothered Kagome to no end. If her feelings for him were so strong already, how strong would they be in another week? A month? Kagome didn't want to think about that at the moment. Inuyasha probably hated her after her blatant display of indifference towards him the day before. She only hoped he would forgive her. The sound of Kagome's doorbell disrupted her train of thought.

`Who could that be?' Kagome wondered. `It's only ten in the morning.'

***********

Of all the people Kagome had expected to see on the other side of the door, Inuyasha certainly wasn't one of them. Yet here he was, standing on her doorstep, a pained expression adorning his face.

“Can I come in?” Inuyasha inquired softly.

“Yeah,” Kagome responded almost immediately, eager to see him again. She moved aside to allow him entrance to her home and led him up the stairs and into her bedroom. An awkward silence was prevalent until Inuyasha spoke aloud.

“Look, I want to explain…about what you heard yesterday,” Inuyasha said, not wanting to procrastinate any longer. He needed to get this off his chest.

“I'm listening,” Kagome acknowledged, much to Inuyasha's relief. Inuyasha took a seat at the edge of Kagome's bed and she promptly followed suit

“Where should I start?”

“Is it true?”

“Is what true?”

“Have you slept with Sango?”

Inuyasha should have expected this question, but he still wasn't quite sure how to answer it. Then again, it was just a simple yes-or-no question, but it held such complicated overtones. After a moment of indecision, Inuyasha decided the best way to answer the question was to be as honest as possible.

“Yes, I did…but that was a long time ago, long before I met you.”

Kagome was hoping against all hope that he would deny it and say it wasn't true, but she reckoned she'd only be fooling herself.

“How long were you two together?”

“About two months.”

“Why'd you guys break up?”

“We just weren't meant for each other, is all.”

“Care to tell me what happened?”

“It's a long story.”

“I have all day.”

“In that case, I guess I'll start from the very beginning…”

A loud knock alerted Sango to someone's presence at her front door. When she opened her door, Sango was stunned to see Inuyasha in such a state of sheer helplessness. His normally exuberant amber eyes were glazed over in sadness, and his head hung low in defeat.

“Can I come in?” Inuyasha asked whispered softly.

“Yeah,” Sango replied immediately.

After he entered her home, Sango wasted no time inquiring about his current state of distress.

“What's wrong?” she asked worriedly.

“Do I look that bad?” Inuyasha countered, trying to sound humorous but failing miserably.

“Uh huh. Now spill it.”

“I broke up with Kikyo.”

“It's about time!” Sango exclaimed, obviously excited at the fantastic news. Apparently, however, Inuyasha didn't think his recent break-up was an issue to celebrate about, for he gave her an angry glare.

“Oh. Is that what's keeping you down?”

Inuyasha merely nodded.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Not really.”

“Well, you didn't come over for nothing. Come on.”

Sango led Inuyasha to her room and sat on the edge of her bed, waiting for Inuyasha to follow suit.

“Do you still have feelings for her?”

Inuyasha carefully contemplated her question but was reluctant to give her an answer.

“I'll take that as a yes.”

Inuyasha was in no position to object to her assumption. If, in fact, he had relinquished his feelings for Kikyo, he wouldn't be here right now seeking consolation from Sango. Even after his profound realization of why his relationship with Kikyo had failed, he wasn't ready to let go, not yet anyway. That was why he came to Sango. She always had been the most insightful person he knew, although she was quite direct and blatant at times.

“Look, Inuyasha,” Sango said to gain his attention. “If it makes you feel any better, you did the right thing. Kikyo was a complete bitch, for lack of a better term.”

“It doesn't, but I guess it's a start,” Inuyasha admitted.

“Do you want to get over her or not?”

Again, Inuyasha was hesitant to give her an answer.

“You're hopeless, Inuyasha.”

“It's just, I thought our relationship would work out.”

“Well, it didn't. So get over it and move on.”

“Easier said than done. It's not like you've ever been in my position before.”

“No, but I know what it feels like to let someone slip away.”

Inuyasha turned his head to face Sango when she made that comment, genuinely confused by the implications of her remark. At first, Inuyasha thought she was referring to a deceased relative, perhaps, but the far-away look in her eyes told him otherwise. Sango timidly leaned forward and quickly brushed her lips against Inuyasha's, tacitly admitting that she harbored feelings for him. Everything seemed to go on from there. Articles of clothing were swiftly removed and cast aside as Sango acted on her desires for Inuyasha. Before he knew what was happening, Sango screamed out her pleasure for all to hear.

“I guess it all went downhill from there,” Inuyasha explained.

“Why? It sounds like you two were…inseparable,” Kagome said with a hint of envy.

“We were, but in the physical sense of the term,” Inuyasha replied bashfully. “I suppose that's where we went wrong. We rushed into things.”

“Wow,” Sango said breathlessly. “That was…phenomenal.”

Sango laid next to Inuyasha on her bed, sweating profusely but completely sated. Her right arm lay strewn across Inuyasha's bare chest, caressing it occasionally. Inuyasha, however, was consumed by his thoughts. After all, he had just broken up with Kikyo, and here he was, lying naked on Sango's bed. He barely registered what was going on, but that soon changed when Sango began touching him in more sensitive areas. Inuyasha's inner voice had been alert then, but her ministrations simply felt too good for him to protest, so he let her continue. When all was said and done, Inuyasha began to ponder the consequences of their actions.

“Inuyasha?” Sango asked, sensing his unease.

“Hm?” Inuyasha replied, his thoughts interrupted by Sango.

“What's wrong?”

“Nothing. Nothing's wrong.”

“Do you regret what we just did?”

“No, I don't. I was just thinking.”

“About what?”

“About us.”

Sango smiled.

“Does this mean, you know, that we're together?” she asked.

“Yeah, I guess it does.”

Sango, it seemed, was able to give Inuyasha the solace he so desperately needed. The time they spent together erased all thoughts of Kikyo from Inuyasha's mind, and for that, he was thankful, but the time they spent together was often spent in bed. Inuyasha didn't know what it was about their relationship. Sango couldn't keep her hands off of him and he couldn't keep his hands off of her. Initially, neither Sango nor Inuyasha had any problems with their relationship. They were friends, the sex was good, and everything was fine. Wasn't it? As the days went by, Inuyasha had begun to ponder about his future with Sango. Sure, the sex was great, but other than that, they hadn't really connected. Inuyasha and Sango had been friends since…Kami knows how long. That in itself was the problem; Inuyasha and Sango were far better friends than they were lovers. Sango, insightful as usual, noticed it as well, so neither party was relatively hurt when they decided to call it quits.

“Look, Sango, this isn't working out,” Inuyasha said before they had a chance to become intimate again.

Sango sighed. She knew this moment was coming. “I know.”

“Can we still be friends?”

“Of course, Yash. You know we'll always be friends.”

“So, you're not sleeping with her anymore?” Kagome asked.

“No. That's what I was trying to explain to you, but you ignored me for the better part of yesterday.”

“I'm sorry. I guess I jumped to conclusions. I just freaked when I found out about you two.”

“You're forgiven. Does this mean we're okay now?”

“Yeah. I have a few more things I'd like to know, though.”

“What is it?”

“Do you still have feelings for Sango or Kikyo?” Kagome asked fearfully.

“Absolutely not,” Inuyasha answered truthfully.

“Good,” Kagome said, releasing a sigh of relief. “Did you and Kikyo ever...you know…do it?”

“No. Kikyo wasn't that kind of person, and I wasn't about to pressure her for sex.”

“One more thing,” Kagome said. “Why did you and Kikyo break up?”

“What is this, twenty questions?” Inuyasha laughed.

“No, I was just curious,” Kagome countered.

“Can we talk about this another time? I just want to hold you right now.”

Kagome didn't object as Inuyasha laid down on her bed and gathered her into his arms. She hadn't felt those arms around her in over a day, and that was longer than she was willing to wait. Every second she was without his touch was pure agony, but she was glad he was with her now, and that was what mattered.

“So, Kagome, you haven't told me about any of your ex's yet,” Inuyasha pointed out. “It's only fair that you tell me about your past relationships.”

“Later,” Kagome mumbled. “I want to take a nap.”

Inuyasha chuckled, but he supposed he could use a nap, too, after yesterday's restless night. Inuyasha gently pulled the covers over Kagome and himself, and the couple quickly dozed off, completely content to be in each other's arms.
