Epiphany
Kagura stretched once more, holding back a yawn as she debated if she wanted to go home or not. Inuyasha and Kagome had just left for their date in Kagura's car. Since the only vehicle Inuyasha had to drive was a mountain bike, Kagura let him borrow her Mustang.
She sighed, rising from her resting place on the couch. She didn't have rehearsal tonight. They let the cast rest on the weekends. Slipping on sandals, she opened the door to see Aiko struggling with two or three grocery bags. She quickly reached to relieve her of the burden.
“Oh, hi honey, Inuyasha leave already?” Aiko asked smiling.
“Yep, I was actually getting ready to go myself.” Kagura said carrying the groceries into the kitchen and beginning to put them away.
“Her name's Kagome, right?” Aiko said carrying the rest of the groceries in. “The girl he went out with.”
“Yep. Kagome. She's actually in the play with me. She plays the other major female role.” She answered.
“Do you like her?”
Kagura paused, a box of cereal in mid-air. She hadn't really thought about if she liked Kagome or not. She had yet to make a decision on it. In rehearsal she thought Kagome was the only other one in that play who had some common sense.
“I suppose I do. I can't really say, I don't know her well enough yet.” Kagura said finally, shrugging her shoulders. She finished with the bag she had carried in, “Ok, Mom, I have to get going. My mom is going to start getting worried.” She leaned over and kissed Aiko on the cheek. “See you, later.”
Aiko waved her goodbye as Kagura walked out the door. She had to walk but it wasn't that far so she didn't mind. The sun was still up and the day was still warm. The weather was making her feel better and she was hoping Kohana was home by the time she got there.
`No, she's not, stupid. She's working late tonight.'
Damn it, she had forgotten that she was going to be late tonight. She started humming and singing a Bowling for Soup song that popped into her head as she walked home.

“Ok, ok, you're saying that you beat the crap out of Miroku the first time you met him?” Kagome asked, her face turning red from laughing.
Inuyasha took a bite of his ice cream, keeping a straight face. “I'm telling you, he hurt Kagura and it pissed me off. Plus he was huge geek so it wasn't anything new.”
“No way.” Her jaw dropped. “Smooth talking, flirtatious Miroku was a geek.”
This time Inuyasha laughed, “Oh yea, big glasses and everything.”
Kagome sat back, licking her ice cream. “I guess people can surprise you.” She let out a small giggle as if she was thinking about something.
“What's so funny?” Inuyasha asked, staring at her oddly.
Kagome shook her head, “Nothing.”
Inuyasha reached and grabbed her cone, pulling it out of her reach before she even realized what happened.
“Hey, give that back.” She yelled offended.
“Nope,” He smirked, “I'll give you your ice cream after you tell me what you were laughing at.”
She laughed shaking her head. A thoughtful expression came over her face and then she frowned in defeat, pouting her lip out. “Stop being a baby. It's no big deal.”
Inuyasha crossed his arms, which was quite hard to do holding two ice cream cones. “Tell me or I'm eating your ice cream.”
She laughed, “Fine.” She studied him for a second, “The other night at rehearsal Ayame walked in on Sesshoumaru and Kagura playing tonsil hockey in the piano room. I always thought that they hated each other and it surprised almost everyone.”
“What the fuck did you just say?” Inuyasha said clipped, the laughter gone from his face.
Kagome narrowed her eyes at him. “Excuse me?” She frowned, “Don't talk to me like that.”
Inuyasha shook his head, “Sorry.” He handed her ice cream back, “When did this happen?”
Kagome bit her lip thinking, “Maybe Wednesday, possibly Thursday.”
Inuyasha stared at her for a second like he was trying to read her mind. Shaking his head as if clearing his mind he smiled again, “Sorry, usually Kagura tells me all that stuff so it kind of surprised me.”
Kagome smiled back still surprised and annoyed by his initial reaction. “It's ok. No big deal, I was surprised myself.”
~*~*~*~*~*~
Kagura sat on her couch watching Law and Order, which was one of her favorite shows. She was chowing down on popcorn more for the sake of being bored than hungry.
`I wonder when Inuyasha's going to get back.'
She kicked her flip-flop off trying to amuse herself.
`He better be good to my car.'
Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door. Kagura growled to herself, annoyed that someone would dare interrupt her in her alone time. Standing up, she glanced at her watch as she made her way to the door. Only 8:30, way too early for Inuyasha to be bringing back her car. Even he couldn't screw up a date this early.
She opened the door, surprised by the person standing in front of her. “I thought I told you to get the fuck away from me.”
Mika frowned, “Kagura, I wish you would talk to me.”
“No, I won't. Sorry about your luck. I wish you wouldn't have walked out on me. Guess we can't all get what we want.” Kagura said venomously.
“Hon, won't. . .” She stopped at Kagura's look, “Kagura, can I just talk to you for a few minutes?”
Kagura looked at her watch, “You have three minutes.”
“Don't you think that a little unfair?”
“Two minutes and forty-two seconds.”
Mika sighed, gathering her thoughts, “Listen I made a lot of mistakes when I was a kid.”
“Yea, like getting knocked up and not being smart enough to use a condom.”
The comment hit home, Kagura could tell. She could almost physically see the damage like Kagura actually hit her face.
“Yea, like that. I want to explain it to you better so maybe you'll find it in your heart to forgive me and maybe understand the decisions I made.” Mika said quietly not looking Kagura in the eye.
“Listen, you're not getting any pity from me and your times up.” She shut the door and walked away not caring if Mika left or not. She grabbed her purse and left out the back door, cutting through her neighbor's yard to avoid running into Mika.
She started to go toward Inuyasha's but she knew he wasn't home.
“Fuck.” She mumbled to herself changing her direction to the park. She hated being by herself so a public place was the next best thing.
The swing set that marked the entrance to the park came into view. She walked to the back part where the benches and canvases adorned the lawn.
She sat down pulling her knees to her chest. Her eyes burned, knowing she was going to start crying. God, she hated to cry. How could Mika do this to her? What right did she have to just decide to come into her life again?
Did she just think that Kagura was just going to drop everything and call her `mommy' again? God, she pissed her off.
“So the fearless bitch does have a weakness, then. I didn't think it was possible.”
Kagura looked up to see Sesshoumaru standing above her, a curious expression on his face. She shivered, “Fuck off, Sesshoumaru. I'm not in the mood to deal with you.”
She heard movement and when she looked up she expected to see him leaving but instead he was shrugging off his jacket. “Here.” He said quietly as he handed it to her. “You look cold.”
Kagura pulled the coat around her shoulders and rubbed her arms trying to warm them. “Thanks.” He sat next to her, saying nothing. She risked a peek at him. He was wearing that red sweater she had seen him wearing at rehearsal one time. It looked good and she cringed inwardly. He was probably not the best person to be checking out. “Why are you out alone this late?” She asked making conversation.
He shook his head, “I should be asking you the same question.”
She sighed, “I was having some, well some issues and Yasha wasn't home so I came here to think.”
“You know it's probably not for safe for you to be out here alone.”
She looked at him annoyed, “I can take care of myself. Thank you.” To prove her point, she pulled out a can of mace.
“You know a simple spray from that wouldn't do much good. It wouldn't stop me.” He said calmly.
She stared at him, her grip tightening on the pepper spray, “Is that a threat?”
His eyes met with hers, “Hardly.” He turned away from her again. “So what's bothering you?”
She let out a bark of laughter, “Why the hell do you want to know?”
“Kagura, I'm your lover on the stage. Can't we at least be friends off of it?” He said not looking at her.
She watched him carefully. He was acting differently and she couldn't decide if she liked it or not. “I'm adopted, you see, like Inuyasha, and well my biological mom decided that now that I've grown up, it's time for her to be a mom. It's just a little bit aggravating knowing that I was such an inconvenience.”
“Makes sense.”
“What do you mean it makes sense?”
“Well most women feeling guilty about abandoning their children, the same as women feel guilty about having an abortion.” He explained.
“No, no, no that doesn't work with me. It took her almost fourteen years to feel guilty.” She shook her head. “That's not all right with me.”
“I never said it was right only that it makes sense. You know, Kagura, not everyone in the world has a chance to go back and fix his or her mistakes. Are you going to deny your own mother that chance?”
“I have a mother already. One who never thought that I was a mistake.”
Sesshoumaru was quiet as if thinking. She was beginning to think he wasn't going to talk anymore when he sighed, “You know I was really young when my mother died.” Kagura stared at him, not saying anything. “It was right after my father left my mother for Inuyasha's. It was cancer but for almost all of my life, I blamed it on my father leaving us.”
“I'm sorry, Sesshoumaru.” She said quietly.
“I spent a lot of my life on my own from foster home to foster home. I was never lucky like you and Inuyasha and got adopted.” He leaned a little closer to her, just barely touching her arm. “So I understand what it's like to think you're not loved.”
Kagura was at a loss for words. Two hours ago he was an egotistical, self-centered, arrogant jerk and now he was compassionate and understanding. It was a little unnerving. Just as she started to speak up, a clap of thunder sounded. They both looked up surprised. Almost as soon as the thunder came, rain started coming down.
Kagura smiled, it was her favorite rain. It was heavy but it wasn't really cold and perfect to be stuck in. Sesshoumaru was starting to go under one of the canopies to hide from the rain but Kagura grabbed his arm to stop him. “Wait, I like the rain.”
He looked at her like she was an idiot but stayed in the rain with her. She stepped away from him and tilted her head back feeling the rain hit her face. It was so refreshing. She did a little spin and started laughing, her head still tilted back.
She felt a presence in front of her and she opened her eyes to see Sesshoumaru standing in front of her. His white hair was plastered against his head and Kagura smiled. “See, isn't the rain nice?”
He merely smiled back, something she had never seen him do that before. He leaned forward wrapping her in his arms and she welcomed his touch as he brought his lips down to hers.
A shock ran down her body as their lips met. No kiss had ever felt quite like this. Sesshoumaru pulled her closer to his body and she wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling to him almost desperately. She felt her hips being pushed against his and she moaned into his mouth. Her mind was being taken over but she still felt the rain falling down around her.
A droplet hit her face and she pulled away from him. They both stared at each other shocked and he licked his lips as if tasting her. “I . . . I need to go.” She said as she started to walk away.
“Kagura, wait.” He said catching up with her. “Are you walking?”
“Yea, I let Inuyasha borrow my car so I'm currently transportation-less.” She said sheepishly.
“Let me drive you home then. If you got sick you'd ruin rehearsal.”
She shook her head, “Somehow you continue to be so damn arrogant.”
“It's a gift.” He said absently. He gestured toward a black car, “That ones mine.”
She jumped in when he unlocked the door, rubbing her arms because she was cold again. He reached for the radio and turned on Disturbed. Kagura's jaw dropped for a moment but she quickly closed it, thinking it was best not to comment. She always pegged him for a classical kind of guy.
“So where am I taking you?”
“You know where Erie St. is?” He nodded. “I'm on the 600 block.”
The ride was quiet but comfortable and Kagura snuggled back in the seat feeling the warmth of the heater lull her into sleep.
~*~*~*~*~*~
“Kagura.”
“Hm. . . Go away.” She turned away from the offending voice.
“Kagura, unless you plan on spending the night in my car, you have to get up.” Sesshoumaru said chuckling.
She blinked and shook her head, “I'm sorry. I didn't mean to fall asleep.”
“It's ok. I understand.” He shut off the car and got out, opening her door for her. She smiled, he was a gentleman. He walked her to her front door.
She leaned up and kissed him. “Good night.” With that she walked inside and shut the door.
She didn't hear him but he smiled to himself, “Good night, Kagura.”
~*~*~*~*~*~
A crash brought Kagura out of her dreams. It wasn't loud but it was enough to disturb her sleep.
“Kagura, wake up.”
She rolled over, covering her ears from the offending voice. `Maybe if she laid here long enough it would go away.'
“Kagura, get up.” The voice commanded a little louder this time.
`No such luck.' She opened her eyes to find herself face to face with very familiar amber eyes. “What do you want, Inuyasha?” She asked groggily, “It's only. . .” She looked at her alarm clock, “It's past midnight.”
He shrugged, “Couldn't sleep.”
Kagura stared at him blankly for a minute. He used to do this all the time when he was younger but that had stopped when he stopped believing in the closet monster. “Inuyasha shut my window, will you?” She scooted over on her bed to make room for him.
He shut her window softly. Apparently the noise she heard was her book falling off her shelf when Inuyasha tried to sneak through the window. He sat on the bed with her but he sat across from her instead of next to her. `Fuck.' She thought to herself. `Something's wrong and he's completely pissed. Hopefully he won't blow up.'
“Kagura, what the hell?” He asked quietly, which was very unlike him.
“Inuyasha, stop it. All right? It's almost one `o' clock in the fucking morning. Don't play mind games with me.” She said, trying to rub her eyes into better focus. “What's your problem?”
Inuyasha glared at her for a second, “Fine.” He crossed his arms, meeting her angry stare. “What's this I hear about you locking lips with that Sesshoumaru bastard?”
Kagura groaned, “Inuyasha, don't do this.”
“I'll do what I want, bitch.” His voice hurt her, he was really angry with her. “Is this true?” Inuyasha spat out angrily.
“So what if it is?” She spat right back. “You're not my fucking father or my fucking boyfriend so fuck off. You have no right to tell me what to do.”
“Kagura, that guy's a bastard.” Inuyasha yelled in a barely controlled whisper. “Stay away from him.”
“Stop it. Stop it right now.” She said, biting down on tears. “I'm not your little sister, Inuyasha. You can't tell me who I'm allowed to talk to. He's not the evil guy you're making him out to be.”
“We're talking about the same guy that demanded that I go prove my relation to him so he can have money from some dead guy that I don't even know.” Inuyasha said sounding a little less mad. “That whole arrogant, the world revolves around me attitude pisses me off. He doesn't care about anyone but himself, you can just tell by the way he trounces around.”
She shook her head, “You have no idea what you are talking about. Today when you were off trying to seduce some little tramp, Mika decided to come by and try to fuck with my life again.” She felt tears start to come down her face. “Then someone helped me remember that things were gonna be ok, Inuyasha. I'll give you three guesses as to who it was.”
Inuyasha sighed and scooted next to her, wiping the stray tear off her face. “Kagura, I don't like him and I don't think you should trust him.”
“Inuyasha, I'm a big girl. I can make decisions for myself.” She slid into his arms, resting her head on his chest. “I know you only want to protect me but you can't control me.”
“I'm sorry, Kagura, I don't know why that pissed me off so much.” He said quietly, rocking her a little and rubbing her arm reassuringly.
“Your advice is important to me but don't tell me what to do. Ok, Yasha?” She said softly. “I need to find out for myself what I think of Sesshoumaru.”
Inuyasha sighed and laid down pulling Kagura against him. “Fine but if he does something wrong, don't think I won't think twice about kicking his ass.”
Kagura was still mad but she had to smile at his protective personality. “Ok, I believe you.”
Inuyasha chuckled softly as he leaned down to kiss Kagura. He tightened his hold on her as he moved on top of her. She started to do what was automatic but she stopped, pushing Inuyasha off of her.
“Yasha, you can't have it both ways.” She said quietly, drawing her knees up against her chest.
“What's that supposed to mean, Kagura?” He asked, narrowing his eyes.
He was getting mad again but he was being unfair. “Inuyasha, you can't tell me who I can and can't date and then just date whoever you want.”
“I thought we came to an agreement. I just said I'd back off.” He said frustrated.
He had no idea and it was pissing Kagura off to no end. “You can't tell me who I can date, date someone else, and then expect me to spread my legs every time you clap your hands.”
“Kagura, you're being ridiculous. Me and Kagome went on one date.”
“Inuyasha, I'm not stupid. I know you like her a lot.” She shook her head, sighing. “You can't have it both ways, Yasha. Me or her? You can't expect to get it from both of us”
Inuyasha glared at her. He opened his mouth to answer but closed it. Without saying anything he stood and opened her window, leaving the way he had come in.
Kagura laid her head on her pillow trying not to cry. She hadn't wanted to say that to Inuyasha but for some reason what they were doing just didn't seem right to her. Almost like she was lying to Sesshoumaru and Kagome. But most of all like she was lying to herself.
She pulled the covers up over her head realizing then but not really caring that Inuyasha still had her keys and she wasn't likely to get them back tomorrow. The only person she knew who could hold a grudge as long as herself was the only person who's grudges mattered to her.
Disclaimer: As you've already guessed, I don't own Inuyasha but I wish I did.
Author's Note: I apologize for not updating for so long. I now have a class that consists only of story writing but they have to be original works so I've been neglecting my first love. I finished my assignment so I'll be working on this more often. Thank you to those read and then to those who review.
