InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Three Riddles and The Arrows of Time ❯ A Demon ( Chapter 1 )

“OK so maybe this wasn’t my greatest idea.” A raven-haired girl in attire that did belong in this era, in any way, ambled through the bushes. Every so often one would hear an “Ouch!” and could assume the state of said girl’s legs. She had departed her party in fury, marched off into the forest and ignored the obvious sunset looming in her mind.
“Stupid Inuyasha!” She yelled as a another thorn caught her calf and she hissed in pain. “All I wanted was a ‘Thank you’ and he could even do that.” She mumbled to herself and realization of her situation began to dawn on her as thunder cracked across the sky. She shivered as the sun left its home in the sky to retreat beyond the horizon and the girl quickly missed its warmth. Her frustration at the entanglement of her clothes and hair in brambles finally took over and she angrily pulled at the bushes. She broke out into a run, feeling the blood on her legs dripping down to soak her socks. She growled out her pain and kept running, assured by the opening she saw up ahead. She broke through sighing with the comfort of freedom only to lose her footing to a steep hill. Her relief quickly turned to fear and she screamed as she slid down the grass, still wet from rain earlier that day. Somewhere in the back of her mind, her years of living in the Sengoku Jidai told her that her screaming plus the scent of blood in the air did not equal good things, but that quickly faded as her destination arrived. Foggily in the back of her mind an old proverb her grandfather had once said arose, “It’s not the fall that kills you, it’s the sudden stop at the bottom.” and the girl almost laughed as her head came in contact with rock. Pain ricocheted all throughout her body and the world soon went black afterwards.
Kagome awoke to the feeling of water dripping on her temple. The water droplets slid down her cheek and then followed the easy trail of her jaw line down to the cold floor below. She faintly recognized her bed as stone and the cold breeze running up her legs was quite discomforting. Her fall came back to her mind and she cringed in pain as she tried to sit up. Her head ached, and her legs burned. She reached down and felt multiple cuts along her calves. It was dark and the girl could see nothing. She heard the crickets though and knew she needed to find somewhere safe to rest until the morning. She stood and felt for anything to guide her through the night, she found more rock and dragged her hands across the rough surface. ’I must have fallen at the entrance of a cave.’ Half of her said that scary things like bears and demons like caves but the other half was covered in goose bumps and wished for a place to escape the wind. Following the want of comfort rather than logic, as Kagome was so fond of doing at times, she continued to drag her hand across the wall and ventured deeper into the cave.
She continued to see nothing but she heard various things. Kagome looked around in wonder as she heard water falling from the formations on the ceiling to the ground. The sound, she at first found annoying, but after a awhile the combined ’tips’ and ’taps’ of the water created music in her mind. Her hand finally ran out of rock wall to skim across and the echoes of the water told Kagome she was in a large room. She edged her foot forward carefully, slowly feeling across the ground as she traversed the dark emptiness. Her foot softly came in contact with a large rock and Kagome reached out her hands to touch it. It was cold as rock should be but as her hands searched the boulder she found something strange about the rock. Her hands met metal and she felt out the shape as some sort of Kanji symbol. That is when the cold rock became as it shouldn’t be: warm. Kagome tried to pull her hands away and screamed when she couldn’t. Like when one is electrocuted, she could not let go of the metal and she felt as the sacred power within her flared to life. She felt the same energy as when she released Inuyasha from the God Tree and she realized she might be unleashing something that was supposed to be sealed for the good of the world. Kagome could not however, do anything about her revelations and the metal grew painfully hot underneath her touch. Right before she felt like her skin was going to fall off, the entire boulder exploded. Kagome was flung back against another rock. She cried as her back came into contact with the hard surface and she strained to see what had happened in the darkness. The world was still black and her hand searched behind her for serious injuries to her person. She quickly stopped her ministrations when she heard a grunt. Kagome fell silent and sat still, she argued with herself determining what she should do next. Should she call out and see who it is, or remain silent and try to stay hidden in the dark? Whatever it was would probably be able to smell her or hear her breathing, and so hiding in her current state wouldn’t work anyways. With a bravery she had no idea she had, Kagome called out into the darkness,
“Hello?” She was answered with a pained sigh, it sounded like a man! Kagome quickly scrambled to her feet, cringing as her back told her how it felt about that action. She filled the gap between her and the whatever-it-was and knelt down next to it, “Hey are you OK?”
“A...miko?” was the pained reply. It was a man! Kagome reached out to help him up but pulled her hands back as a surge of dark aura wrapped itself around her fingers. ’A demon!’ she gasped and tried to pull away. She was stopped however when his hand grabbed her wrist and pulled her back with enough force that she fell on top of him. ‘He sure feels like a man.’ Kagome thought grimly to herself as she ran through various scenarios of death in her head. The vague portrait of Inuyasha and his brother ran through her mind. ‘Ah, Sesshomaru.’ she thought bitterly and the scenes of her death continued to play out in her mind as she assumed this demon would be much like the unpleasant dog lord. The girl then realized the oddly intimate position she laid in with the unknown demon and attempted to right herself in a vertical position. She was stopped once again by his hand and her head remained on his chest. She could hear his weak heartbeat and realized even if he wanted to kill her he didn’t have the strength.
“Hey...umm....” Kagome attempted to break the awkward silence hanging in the air,
“Silence.” His voice was deep, deeper than any man she had ever known. It was raspy too, as if he hadn’t spoke in centuries. She frowned her distaste at the rude command and opened her mouth to reply but was silenced again, this time with his other hand.
“Mmmmnuh!” Was all Kagome could manage to say before she heard a small chuckle.
“Little Miko, I’m using your energies to heal me and I need to concentrate. How can I focus with your sultry little voice ringing in my head?”
“Mm?” He laughed again as she attempted to speak.
“I will not harm you, but I need you to remain very still and quiet.” Even if he was planning to kill her, Kagome could not see the harm in trying to bargain with her obedience. She could not see the harm until she felt all her energy being drained away. She suddenly felt fatigued and could barely keep her eyes open. The last thing the girl remembered was the feeling of the demon sitting up and pulling her into his lap, before she gave into the sleep she so desired at the moment.
