An evil laugh. “Puny human.”
Katsuhiro stopped walking upon hearing the voice. “I’ve been looking for you,” he remarked without looking at the female figure ahead of him.
“So I gathered,” replied the voice. “Any particular reason, or are you going to waste my time as you’ve done so much in the past?”
“Oh, this time is gonna be different, trust me.” he chuckled. “Much different.” His gaze continued to meet nothing but the ground.
The voice feigned surprise. “Oh, really? How so?”
“Because-” he jerked his head up and stared at the origin of the voice, “-this time, we fight.”
The figure’s eyes narrowed. “You wish to fight me?”
His eyes didn‘t move. “That’s what I said, isn’t it?”
She grinned. “Yes, it is, I was merely making sure you truly wanted to be as foolish as I thought.”
He recoiled at the remark. “Did you-” He looked around. “Did she-” He looked back at her. “I am not foolish!” he yelled.
She chuckled briefly, then suddenly all pretext was gone, and she was all business. “Then let’s do it.”
“About time.” He drew his weapon, a plain-looking long sword with gold edging and a gold hilt. “Bring it on.”
She drew her sword as well, which transforms into a long, primarily black, fang-shaped blade, with red leather on the handle and a red animal-like mane around the hilt. She lowered her sword and pointed it at Katsuhiro. “Show me what you’ve got.”
He twirled the sword around and took a stance with his blade pointed forward. “I’m gonna take you down!”
She shook her head. “I doubt it.”
Yelling, he charged. Bringing his sword up, he launched himself at her and attempted to make a high cut down across her body. But he had underestimated her. She unfurled her bat-like wings and took to the air, causing his attack to miss. He landed and looked up in time to see her dropping toward him, bringing her sword down at the same time trying to split him in half. He barely got his weapon up in time to make the block. Their blades connected, the high-pitched clang resounding through the forest surrounding the clearing they fought in.
As they struggled for dominance, their weapons pushed at each other’s, and they drew closer. Katsuhiro grinned. “You’re pretty good.”
“I’m not good,” she growled. She forced him away and thrust her right palm at him. “I’m the best!” From her outstretched hand sprang a yellow-tinged ball of energy that leaped toward Katsuhiro.
He jumped in an effort to get out of the way, and just barely made it. The ball of energy missed its target and proceeded to turn the ground where he had just been into a fairly large smoking crater. He looked at the crater, then back at her. “I don’t care if you can do that, Sonya. I’m still taking you down!”
“”Not in this life, human!” She flapped her wings and shot toward him. This time he didn’t have time to react as she covered the rather long distance between them in mere seconds. He was only able to blink before he was kicked hard in the stomach. He was then kneed and slammed into the ground.
She landed at the same time as Katsuhiro. “Time to finish this.” She spun her sword around in her grip and stabbed it through Katsuhiro and into the ground, where it stuck. “Game over, you weak, pathetic human.” She looked down at him. “I’d advise you not to try anything like that again. For your own safety. I hope you’ve learned your lesson.” She withdrew her sword from his nearly-lifeless body, sheathed it, and flew away.
And he simply lay there on the ground, the only action he had enough strength left to accomplish. His weapon rested a few feet from him, out of his reach. Not that he would have been able to retrieve it if he had to, anyway. He tried to get up and found out the hard way that it was a futile venture. Giving up, he allowed himself to be overcome by darkness, hoping that when it went away, if it ever did, he would have the strength to live that he so dearly wished he had now.
