Through a Cat’s Eye
She sat and watched as the rest of her little group rested. It had been a hard won battle, but they had all survived. She’d had doubts about the outcome several times during the fight, but her friends had shown their true worth, once more.
Looking at her mistress, a warmth settled over her mind. The taijiya had shown the world the strength of her core. She would never back down, never accept defeat. That was what the cat loved about her. She was the home of Kirara’s heart. The one she could show her most vulnerable side to, without worry of rejection from seeming weak.
Sango would always be there to protect her when she was in need of protection. She and the slayer had both taken their turn at playing the role of mother, daughter, sister and friend to the other. They had been together for so long now, that they could tell just what the other needed without having to be asked.
Kirara gave her silent promise to her companion to always be by her side in any time of need.
Next, she turned her attention to the monk. He seemed so much more innocent in his sleep than he did when awake. She knew how he vexed the slayer with his wandering hand and lecherous thoughts. She also knew how the hoshi never failed to come to her mistress’ aid when he was needed. He came willingly, even if he thought the cost might be his own life.
He had shown that he was willing to sacrifice his own happiness to insure the taijiya’s. In Kirara’s mind this made him worthy of her mistress’ affections.
To the monk, Kirara gave her promise to never interfere in his pursual of the girl.
Looking further, she saw the small kitsune. She knew that he tried to put on a brave face for all to see, but she also knew of the loneliness that came out in the deepest hour of the night. Tonight he had cried out more than once for the lost family that had provided comfort to him in his youth.
He had shown courage beyond his years when in battle, but she knew that he still felt the need to be comforted as a child when he saw how cruel the world could be.
Kirara made a promise to him to always bring a warm embrace when the kit needed it most.
Next, she saw the strange miko, who had the ability to guide them on their path to find the jewel, and the future. Kirara knew that the miko had the warmest heart of all the group. The girl could feel the good within any soul. With an essence that was so open to others, the cat knew the miko often felt the sting of an injured spirit, but still would not back down from the desire to feel life to the fullest.
Kirara also knew that without the girl by their side, the group of travelers would not have the spirit to complete their mission.
To Kagome, Kirara made a promise to always add her strength to the miko’s when the girl’s endurance was low.
Last, her gaze drifted to their leader. Her eyes met his amber eyes, and were not surprised to find he was also awake. He took great pride in watching over the others, just as she did. They were very alike, in her mind. Both would sacrifice themselves to insure the safety of any of the others. Both would give their all in protection of the only family they would ever again know. Both felt the never-ending responsibility of making sure that this strange journey came to a successful conclusion.
Both of them felt the weight of the future rest upon their strong shoulders, and did not consider it a burden, but a solemn trust placed in them by a greater being.
To him, she gave her most potent promise. She promised to always stay by his side, to provide a shoulder to lean on when he stumbled, to provide friendship when the rest of the world didn’t understand, to guard him in his own time of weakness, to help him make the world right, once again.
As she looked into his eyes, she saw her own promise reflected in his. Settling in for the night, she felt the warmth of friendship enveloping her as her blanket.
