Chapter 1: Mourning a Loss
"I can't believe I managed to catch up with all that work. I thought I was going to fail for
sure." Kagome was thanking her lucky stars she was going to pass highschool. It had taken her a
while and a lot of hard work but she finally was back at A's and B's in her studies.
"Hey Higurashi, wait up!" Kagome turned around to see who was calling her. It was Eri.
"Hey Kagome, do ya got a sec?"
"Not really Eri. I'm really tired and my mom is expecting me home."
"Oh come on. It'll only take a sec."
"What is it Eri?'
"It's Hojo. He's been looking everywhere for you. I think he wants to ask you out!"
Kagome just rolled her eyes at this. Hojo was a really great guy and all, but he just wasn't
her type. They talked and had even gone on one date, but then Kagome realized she didn't love
him or even like him like that. No, she was in love with Kouga and once she finished school, she
was moving to the Feudal Era permanently to be his life mate. They had both just recently
declared their love for each other. Well at least she did. Kouga always made his love for her
known. Ever since she had been dragged down that well and ran into him three years ago.
"Eri, please, stop."
"What?" Eri put on that innocent face and pouted.
"You know I have a boyfriend now and I love him."
"So."
"So, Eri, stop trying to hook me up with Hojo. I love Kouga and nothing is going to change that."
"Okay, okay. Well if you don't want him anymore does that mean he's up for grabs now?"
"Sure Eri. He's all yours."
With that, Eri gave Kagome a big hug and took off in the direction she came from.
Finally Kagome was free to go home. She continued to walk and finally came upon the Higurashi
shrine. She looked up and noticed a black car there. She had never seen it before. I wonder who it
could be, she thought. She quickened her pace and headed into the house.
Kagome stepped into the house and closed the door. It was silent except for a soft crying
that sounded like it was coming from the living room.
"Mom? Are you here?"
"In the living room Kagome."
Kagome walked into the living room to find her mother, grandfather, her brother, Souta,
sitting with two strangers. One was a rather bulky looking black man wearing sunglasses and the
other was a very pale and petite woman with red hair pulled tightly into a bun. Both were dressed
in black and looked ready for a funeral. They were seated on the love seat directly opposite from
Kagome's family, who were seated on the couch. Kagome looked to her family and saw her

mother was crying and holding Souta while her grandfather were a very solemn expression.
"What's going on? What happened?" Kagome questioned. She was starting to get really scared now.
"Kagome, I think you had better have a seat next to me," stated Ms. Higurashi.
Kagome did as she was told. Her grandfather got up and left the room allowing Kagome
a seat next to her mother. She was preparing for the worst. Her mother turned to her and took a
deep breath.
"Kagome, I have something that I have to tell you. You remember your Uncle Keichi don't you."
"Of course mother."
"Well he's been in a horrible car accident. He died yesterday in the hospital."
Kagome took in a sharp breath. She couldn't believe it. Her uncle was dead. No. It
couldn't be. Kagome instantly felt the tears well up in her eyes. They began to fall in rivers down
her cheeks. Her Uncle Keichi was the only brother, or sibling for that matter, of her late father.
He was actually the last living relative on her father's side. Her mother instinctively wrapped her
arms around Kagome to try and comfort her. After a few moments of silent morning amongst the
three individuals, the woman in black spoke up. Up until then, Kagome had forgotten they were
there. The woman spoke in Japanese but with an American accent.
"Ms. Higurashi, I'm sorry to have brought you such troubling news, and I also apologize
for being so dismissive but we must deal with the other matter of where we shall place Mr.
Higurashi's daughter."
Kagome shot up. She had forgotten all about her cousin.
"Mr. Higurashi leaves soul custody to any immediate family, state side or overseas.
Unfortunately, there is no immediate family willing to take her in the United States and so that
would leave you her next of kin. If you can not or will not take the girl", the woman looked down
at some papers in her lap, "one Nicohacqua Higurashi, then the U.S. Government will have no
other option than to place her in a "half-way house" until she turns 21. After that she will be able
to do what she wishes."
Kagome instantly spoke up. "Of course we can take her. She's family. Why wouldn't
we?!"
Everyone was surprised by her sudden outburst. The woman spoke again.
"I'm sorry young lady but that decision is not up to you. It has to be made by Ms.
Higurashi."
Kagome looked at her mother with pleading, tear filled eyes. "Of course she can stay with
us, can't she mother?"

Ms. Higurashi looked down into her daughter's face. She thought about all the changes
that would have to be made and all the affects this would have on the house hold. Of course she
didn't want to leave her niece out in the cold like that, but they didn't have an extra room, there
would be another mouth to feed, and there was always the deal about Kagome's ability to travel
back to Feudal Japan through the shrine well. Oh but her and Kagome were so close even if they
did live an ocean away, they were constantly writing to each other and every Saturday they would
be on the phone, and they always sent things to one another via mail.
Her emotions must have been playing on her face the whole time because Kagome spoke
again.
"She can live with us, mother? Can't she?"
Ms. Higurashi looked at the emotionless agents across from her and asked, "Would it be
alright if I had a moment to discuss things with my family. It's such a big decision."
"Of course Ms. Higurashi. We'll you give you the rest of the day to consider and you can
call us in the morning with your final decision," replied the woman.
"Thank you," replied Ms. Higurashi.
With that, the man and woman stood up and made ready to leave. The woman shook
hands with Ms. Higurashi and again offered her condolences. They walked single file out of the
living room, Kagome's mother escorting them to the door, leaving Kagome to think about
everything that happened. She still couldn't believe it. Uncle Keichi was dead and her cousin
Nico was homeless. Then it struck her. How could that be? Didn't Nico's mother have any
family? Surely she had a grandmother or something. Then Kagome remembered the agent saying
that there was no immediate family willing to take her. So does that mean Nico's mother's family
didn't want her? Why would someone not want their grandchild or niece? Well I want her. She's
my cousin. Of course I want her.

Kagome was jerked from her thoughts by her mother's voice.
"I think we should call a family meeting tonight. Then we shall discuss the situation."
Kagome just sat on the couch, still overwhelmed by the horrible news. The thought of her
uncle gone and her cousin alone and homeless brought a fresh bout of tears to her eyes.
Kagome's mother made to sit next to her daughter and comfort her, but Kagome got up and
slowly walked to the stairs.
"Kagome, are you alright?"
"Yes mother, I just need to be by myself right now, okay?"
"Okay. If you need anything, I'm here. Don't forget about our meeting, though."
"Thank you. Don't worry, I won't. I'm just going to take a quick nap. "
With that Kagome walked up stairs to her room. She plopped on her bed and began to

reminisce about all the times her and her cousin had together. Her eyes welled up again and she
cried herself to sleep, wondering if her cousin was okay.
"Don't worry Nico", Kagome said to herself. "I'm going to take care of you now."
