~Chapter Four~

Inuyasha walked up to the front gates of the large shrine. He’d just gotten off the phone with Miroku who was blabbering in his ear about being courteous and shit. What the hell did that fuckin’ lecher know about being courteous? He roughly pushed the door bell, letting the button take the brunt of his irritation. The intercom system looked fairly new, especially given the age of the shrine. It made him remember the real reason he was here.

Inuyasha’s ears pricked forward at the sound of footsteps coming at him. He grabbed at his leather jacket, adjusting it nervously. The heavy wood door suddenly swung open and Kagome’s tiny frame appeared in front of him. His body tensed as her smell assailed his nostrils, all sweet and delicious. It would take him a while to get used to the girl’s fragrance. It always seemed to turn his instincts inside out.

Today was the first time he’d seen her in normal clothing. Some of the tragedy and sadness had fallen from her. She was wearing a light pink tee shirt and a pair of faded blue jeans that hugged her skin lovingly, allowing him to see her shape in every beautiful detail. Her crown of shinning black hair was untethered and floating around her shoulders, framing that pretty little face of hers.

“Hi.”

The sound of her voice jerked him back to reality. He averted his gaze and coughed, “Hey.”

She let her head tilt to the side like a curious pup, “So why did I need to wear jeans and boots?”

That made him grin and he pointed over his shoulder.

Unconsciously one of his fangs had popped out, making him look dangerous and more than a little feral. At the sight of his mischievous grin Kagome’s heart flipped over itself and at the same time she got a strange sinking feeling. She took him all in; he was standing in front of her in a pair of low-slung jeans, a plain white tee, and a leather jacket.

Kagome leaned to the side, looking past the large hanyou in her immediate vision, and almost fell to the ground.

A sleek black and red bike was glistening in the mid-morning sun. It was Yamaha’s R1. It was only one of the fastest production bikes available for street use. She knew this model’s name because it was her brother’s dream bike. He’d made her watch this bike perform in a sport arena, so she was fully aware of its capabilities... and its speed.

Did he really think that she was going to be climbing on the back of that thing?

“Uhm… I don’t think so.” Her hands fisted and planted themselves on her hips. Her head cocked to the side defiantly, making her look like an angry clucking chicken.

His grin just widened. “It’s this or yours…” He gestured over to her pathetic little pink bike lying against the gate.

She sighed. She knew she’d never win. Her stomach tightened in anticipation. A part of her really didn’t want to win. I mean what girl wouldn’t want to have an excuse to spend a few one on one time with this gorgeous man?

He walked over to the bike and handed her his extra helmet looking at her expectantly.

She looked up at him, her face a little defeated and a little nervous, “Uhh, how do I put this on?”

He stilled, sighing. “Twist your hair up.” He gripped it and waited until she was done, he flipped the visor up to avoid any suction it might create. Once her head was firmly inside he leaned down to look into her eyes.

“Is it snug?”

“Yeah, it’s kind of uncomfortable.” Kagome made a face, it was hard to move her jaw to speak and it was even harder to hear. She also felt like she’d gained about ten pounds on her face.

“You don’t have to scream, woman, I’m right here.” His face was clearly annoyed but the amusement in his tone belied the expression. “It’s supposed to be tight.” He turned and flipped the passenger peg’s down. “I’m guessing you’ve never been on a bike before right?” Then his hands were gently snapping the strap under her chin.

She could only shake her head lamely, dazed by the feel of his strong hands brushing up against her neck. It took all the willpower she had to suppress a shiver.

“Well, you’re going to wait for me to get on, then put your foot on this stand and swing your leg over to the other side. You can use my shoulders as leverage.” He turned to look at her then. “Is your ankle okay?”

Kagome was taken aback at the soft sincerity in his voice. His eyes were on hers and she’d sworn his gaze pierced straight through her. She opened her mouth, but nothing came. Gods, he was such a brute, and then he turned around and looked at her like that. What was a girl’s heart to do?

“Uhm, it-it’s fine.” She coughed to clear her throat. “We wrapped it and the boots have enough structure to keep the sprain supported. It’s really just sore mostly. I took some minor pain reliever earlier. I’m not limping anymore though, which is good.” She laughed nervously, rubbing her palm on her thigh. Holy crap, she was babbling.

He nodded at her , his long hair was in a loose braid, obviously because its volume wouldn’t fit into the helmet. He turned the key and kicked the bike into gear, revving the gas and letting the engine roar to life.

Kagome jumped at the sound and quickly scrambled to do as she was told. She climbed onto the back of the bike. As she settled into the small seat her body came into intimate contact with his back. She could feel her inner thighs slide into place along his, her breasts being flattened by the plain of his back, and with the purr of the bike vibrating under her the entire experience was fairly erotic. She squirmed against the onslaught of unfamiliar sensations, trying to find a more comfortable position.

Suddenly she felt Inuyasha grab her hands and yank them around his midriff tightly. She hadn’t realized that she had been gripping his shoulders for that long. The motion caused her face to be dragged up against his shoulder blade. Both of their visors were still open and she looked up to see his gold eyes flashing at her.

“You need to hold on to me. There are no seatbelts here. The closer you are to me the better.”

She couldn’t tell because of the helmet, but she was almost sure he was laughing at her. She didn’t have long to brood over it though soon he turned around and let off on the break, letting the bike move forward smoothly.

Kagome got the point real fast. It was a long winding drive down to the bottom of her drive way, if someone could even call it that. Most patrons to the Shrine only used the narrow path if the steps were too much for them. Inuyasha was taking most of the turns at an inhuman speed, testing the bike’s handling. There were moments on the way down she’d swear she was parallel to the ground below her. If Inuyasha had been worried about her hanging on, he’d done it in vain.

Inuyasha couldn’t hide the wolfish grin that broke over his face. He could feel Kagome’s arms quivering around him, whether it was from fear or the tension of holding so tightly onto him he wasn’t sure. Good, he thought, that little girl deserves it. The moment he’d felt her lean body flush against his back he’d known he’d made a big mistake using the bike. And then her hips had started to gyrate against his lower back. He’d had to beat back the overwhelming need to turn around and set her in his lap.

The sensation of her fingers gripping his chest made him grit his teeth. He jerked the bike into another vicious turn. It was going to be a very, very long ride to headquarters.

They arrived at HQ no more than fifteen extremely tense moments later. Kagome had to literally pry her arms away from Inuyasha, and not because she couldn’t stand to let go of the gorgeous hanyou, but because her damn muscles had locked up. And what irritated her most is the fact that the dog actually had the arrogance to ask her if she’d liked it! He’d even chuckled when she’d glared at him.

They were currently making their way through the building and various stages of security. They stepped into an elevator and as he turned away from her silence engulfed them, which was severely awkward. She coughed and reached out and gripped his jacked to catch his attention.

He didn’t look at her but his little white ears flicked to her direction. “What’s up?”

Kagome’s cheeks pinked, “Uhm, I need to use the restroom.”

He still didn’t look at her, arms crossed and staring at the unopened doors. “We’re going to my office, and it has a private restroom. You can use that one.”

She nodded and continued to follow him with her eyes, studying his strong profile. He wasn’t being polite by any means, but he wasn’t being necessarily mean either. Kagome couldn’t wrap her head around his personality. The doors dinged opened and they rounded a few corners in the maze-like building and finally ended at a dead end door. The words “Special Agent Inuyasha InuTashio, Special Agent Miroku Tachibana” were scrolled out in sharp, crisp black lines on the rosted glass. When Kagome walked into the office the view that met her took her breath away.

It was set so they head a clear floor to ceiling view of downtown Tokyo. Row after row of buildings dotted the hazy skyline, “This must be amazing at night!” She exclaimed, she came up on the thick glass and got a sense of being on the edge of a cliff.

He nodded at her, “It’s the only reason I chose it. The bathroom’s through the door on the left.”

She approved. “Thanks.” She turned to use the facilities.

Inuyasha walked over to the window as she closed the door. He looked down at the endless view of concrete and pollution. He remembered his father telling him stories of this area being covered in green leafy foliage. He sighed and crossed his arms, letting his mind wander away after thoughts of his father.

His reverie was cut short as his office door swung open to reveal Kagura Hiromi, his commanding officer and the person who was going to interview Kagome. She was a taller woman, all long lean lines and some sharper angles. Her jet black hair was pulled back into a professional and somewhat severe bun at the nape of her neck, her bangs hung in a straight line above her dark thickly rimmed glasses. Despite the matronly up-do it didn’t detract from her natural beauty. She was wearing her typical black pencil skirt and dark burgundy silk blouse, it outlined her curvaceous silhouette wonderfully. Her would-be red eyes flashed a lovely chocolate brown at him.

“I heard you were going to be arriving shortly, so I just decided it would be more efficient to meet you here.” She grinned at him.

He couldn’t help but return the look, this woman really was something else. The only female with enough courage to go toe to toe with his asshole half-brother, even had to the gall to date the fuck-head. “Bullshit. You’ve come here to keep an eye on me. What’ve you heard?”

Her eyes twinkled with amusement. “Miroku said you’ve taken to this young woman.”

Aahh, so that’s what she was after. “Keh. That fucker doesn’t know shit. I knew you had ulterior motives.” He turned his head away, clearly irritated.

“Of course, I am woman.” She actually chuckled at him, making herself comfortable in his over-stuffed desk chair.

He rolled his eyes. This woman was such a pain in the ass. He heard the flush of the toilet and his bathroom door click open. Kagome appeared in front of his desk, opposite to Kagura, she bowed slightly at the sight of the woman.

“Hello. My name is Kagome Higurashi.” She said politely.

Kagura smiled sweetly. “Nice to meet you, I’m Kagura Hiromi Inuyasha’s boss.” She tilted her head in acknowledgement.

Kagome looked at Inuyasha in surprise. “Oh, will you be the one asking the questions?”

Kagura nodded. “Yes, I only need the beginning details of the day though. Anything after Inuyasha arrived is not needed.”

Kagome looked down at her hands, a slow throbbing pain curiously close to heart started. Dread coated her mouth like wax. “Alright, I understand.”

Kagura’s eyes softened as she looked at the obvious sadness radiating of the girl. She gestured to the seat in front of Inuyasha’s large mahogany desk. “Please.”

Kagome took the seat gratefully, she knew once she started to relive that damned day she was going to have a very hard time standing. She took a deep breath to steady herself.

Inuyasha didn’t like the smell that was coming off the girl. It was like burnt oranges. It was as perverse as the look on her face and in her defeated posture.

A low rumble emerged from deep within him, pure vibration with enough power that it reached the two women at the other side of the room.

Kagura had to force herself not to jerk her eyes up at Inuyasha in surprise as she felt the growl hit her. Her gaze fell to the little girl in front of her instead, watching her relax under the careful vibration. Kagome stopped ringing her hands and let them fall loosely in her lap, her tense posture also visibly loosened. Kagura stole a quick glance at Inuyasha, he was still gazing out the window oblivious to the entire thing.

The puppy didn’t even realize he was doing it! Kagura almost grinned. Interesting.

She internalized the observations and returned to the task at hand. “Okay Kagome, I’m going to need you to start at the very beginning, what happened that afternoon?” Kagura pulled out a recorder so she could type the confession into her file at a later time.

“Well, I was on my way back from school and I dropped my backpack by the stairs and walked around the shrine to the Goshinboku.–“

“For the record Kagome what is the Goshiboku?”

“It’s the large five hundred year old tree at the back of the property.”

“Alright, go on.”

“Uhm, well, I continued on to the Goshinboku and my Da–“ She swallowed harshly and took another settling breath. “My Dad was standing under it. We talked for a couple of minutes when Grandpa came out and started yelling at us about keeping up our chores. Dad coaxed me into helping and I went to the well house to grab another rake. ‘Cause it doubles as a shed we keep all of our tools in there.” Her eyes suddenly went glassy as she remembered back to that day. “I was trying to find the right one when I heard this weird noise. It was coming from the well. I didn’t think anything of it. I’d been kind of freaked out by the well since I was small so I chalked it up to childhood imagination. But–“ She stopped, her brows drawn like she was looking into the well at that very moment.

Inuyasha’s growl went from silent to a full blown warning, straight at Kagura. He didn’t like where this was going. The tirade of smells coming from Kagome was putting him on edge.

Kagura ignored him and pushed even further. “But what Kagome?”

“But it came again,” She whispered, eyes wide in fear. “It was like this awful clicking noise. I couldn’t help it, I had to look. I walked over to it; it was still pretty dark even though it was daylight. This hand shot up out at me and grabbed the edge of the well. It looked like a dead person’s hand. All gray, like stretched leather over bone… Then I heard it say something, it hissed ‘Shikon no Tama’.” The girl visibly gulped, her tiny hands were shaking.

Kagura started at that, “What did it say?” She asked incredulously.

Kagome looked up then, the spell of that day broken, “It wanted the Shikon no Tama. I have no idea what that is. I’ve never heard its name before that. Do you know what it is?”

She didn’t even register the girl’s question. Kagura’s breath rushed from her lungs. She hadn’t heard of that damned jewel in centuries. “Are you sure?” She implored, leaning forward, she looked Kagome in the eye.

Kagome watched as the woman’s eyes in front of her flashed red, and her delicate ears suddenly became extremely pointed. Kagome blinked and looked again, only to find everything back in its place. The matter of the Shikon no Tama was momentarily forgotten she heard herself ask: “You–are you a youkai?”

Kagura was taken aback for the second time that day by this little girl. She saw no reason to lie. “Yes. But how did you know that?”

“I–I saw it. You’re eyes were red for a moment.” Kagome’s head tilted in confusion. “Why are you hiding your true form? You’re much prettier without the human illusion.”

Kagura smiled, she didn’t know whether or not to take that as a compliment. “Thank you, but not many humans feel very comfortable under the watchfulness of blood red eyes.” She said with an ounce of drama and a whole lot of common sense. She was surprised at how naturally this girl accepted her true form. She didn’t even flinch at it. No wonder Inuyasha was acting like this. Her grin widened a little.

Kagome nodded absently, “Oh, I see. Well, how did I see it? Isn’t it an illusion only for humans? I’ve heard stories about them.”

“That’s a very good question Kagome.” She waved her hand dismissing the topic. “We need to return to the rest of your story. Go ahead.”

Kagome rushed through the rest of the story. She tried to think of it as a band-aid. The quicker you pulled it off the sooner it was over with. It didn’t work like that at all. After she gave her the details of how her father received his fatal wound, that pain in her heart became almost crippling. She’d had to turn away for a moment to gather her-self back up and finish it.

“Okay Kagome. That’s enough.” This was from Inuyasha. He was behind her, giving her quiet comfort. He’d been relatively silent the last couple minutes.

She went to get up from her seat and asked, “Is that everything? Do you need anything else from me?”

“Actually, Kagome, I need you to come visit me one more time. I need to tie up some loose ends up on this case. Unfortunately I’m not prepared today, so I’m going to ask that you come back in tomorrow. Can you do that for me?”

Kagome’s brows drew together curiously, “Well if you need me, sure.” She’d have to miss another day of school. Not that she minded, everyone at school looked at her with pity in their eyes. She hated it, made her feel uncomfortable and angry.

“Good. Inuyasha will escort you again tomorrow.” She said as she gathered up her loose papers and tape recorder.

“Oi woman, I’m not a damned chauffeur!” Inuyasha huffed.

“Kagura tipped her glasses down, looking at him above them. “You’ll be picking her up.” This was obviously not a request.

“Keh!”
