Chapter Five
His prideful gruffness, the red that crept into his cheeks whenever she'd lay her head on his shoulder, the way he'd sulk up in the treetop when he hadn't been quick on the uptake or had his ego damaged. Everything, from the top of his silver head down to his bared feet, was gone. He was gone.
Brutal reality left a hollowed space inside Kagome's heart. How could it end this way? Without even a goodbye…
“Think, miko,” Sesshomaru's voice penetrated her deep despair.
She shook her head, looking down at the table. Her mother had made a small breakfast for her…it sat untouched. Teardrops slipped from the corners of her eyes. Sesshomaru stood with his back to the wall, glowering at the pathetic looking miko.
Apparently, she was upset at not being able to get back to his time through the bone-eater's well, he figured she was longing to return to his half-witted brother. He scoffed inwardly at this disgusting thought.
He, however, had more pressing reasons to get back home. Aside from the stench of what Kagome called `automobiles' and `industry,' this place was hideously ugly. The structures that littered the skyline were eye sores. Sesshomaru wasn't one to dwell on what couldn't be changed, but he did find it disheartening that his home had turned from beautiful, lush green forest and countryside into this `cement jungle', as Kagome had referred to it.
But the unstoppable changes destined to come to the land, wasn't the center problem. His thought flickered to the small girl that relied on him. Thinking of her alone, on her own, didn't sit well with him. Why was that?
Even Jaken being with her didn't ease his bothered mind. Damn! He'd never done anything for a mortal before, never even cared to. They were like ants scurrying under his feet. They were worthless, unpredictable; how had they managed to survive another 500 years?
In his high and mighty opinion, aside from Rin, they didn't deserve to be the dominate species. Besides, what he'd done for her had been done out of his sense of duty towards the kindness she'd shown him while he was injured.
That didn't mean that he had any kind of feeling for her. He was obligated to tend to her; she had no one, after all. Seeing to her safety, that was what it was. That was what was causing his insides to writhe with urgency in returning home…
That had to be it….
Now, with growing aggravation, he stood watching the emotional miko. She wasn't even attempting to find another way back. As much as it pained him to admit it, he was going to need her cooperation in finding another way to open the time barrier.
“Is there anything else besides the Shikon no Tama linking you to my time?” he fought to keep his voice the steady calm that he always spoke in. She was really starting to piss him off…
Kagome threw her mind around, trying to grasp onto something, anything that might be able to take them back. Nothing surfaced, the hollowness spread deeper into the abyss of her soul.
“Gomen, Sesshomaru…there's nothing…”
He stepped forward, a growl threatening to escape his lips, ready to unleash on her, when a small boy came sauntering into the room. Stopping dead in his tracks, Sota eyed Sesshomaru up and down with pure curiosity.
“You're not Inuyasha…” the boy said, innocently enough.
The growl finally escaped. “Small favor, boy.”
Sota was caught off guard by Sesshomaru's angry, insulted growl. “W…what's going on Kagome?”
Kagome shook her head, not wanting to relive the events that she was having so much trouble accepting as the truth.
“Not now, Sota, just go away…” she said, much more sharply than she had intended.
“Who's this? His hair looks like Inuyasha's.” Sota jumped when Sesshomaru growled at him again.
Kagome cut in quickly. “Look, Sota, this is Inuyasha's brother.” She spoke softly, but hastily. “He's stuck here with me right now, but I've got to find a way to send him back, okay? Now just go on…” His nosiness knew no bounds!
Sota eyed Sesshomaru just as suspiciously as Sesshomaru was eyeing him with contempt. No, Sota decided, this wasn't the kind of guy to take lightly.
Grabbing an apple from the table, Sota leaned in near his sister, whispering in her ear.
“Be careful, sis. He's not as nice as Inuyasha…too bad you can't sit him…” he jerked his head in Sesshomaru's direction.
Kagome, laying her chin in her hands, watched Sota's back as he exited the room. She was already distressed enough as it was, why do little brothers make it that much worse! She knew she was in bad company, he didn't have to…
She bolted upright. What did he just say…? Jumping up, she knocked her knee on the table, cutting open the skin, producing a splendid gash. Ignoring it, she spun towards Sesshomaru. He merely lifted an irritated eyebrow at her.
“What is it?”
“C'mon, I need to find my grandfather. I have an idea…” she said excitedly.
Sesshomaru followed her calmly from the room as she dashed out, full speed.
Authors Note: Once again, so I'm not sued, I don't own Inuyasha, Rumiko Takahashi is the incredible person that created them. Thanks for reading and reviewing!
