Chapter Eleven

Sango spun so fast, her ponytail whipped around, lashing her face. Her eyes narrowed, flashing, set ferociously on Kikyo.

“What the hell just happened? I know you know!” she hissed furiously at the miko.

Kikyo didn't even flinch at the demon slayers aggressiveness. It would take more then this meddling girl's anger to disrupt her plans; or get the best of her.

“Kagome pulled him through to her time.” Kikyo explained smoothly, dropping her hands that were still held up in prayer position.

This brought a look of surprise to all faces.

“What?” Miroku gasped.

Kikyo fixed him with a look of indifference. “For a monk, you really are spiritually inept.”

Miroku ruffled at this, ready to throw an insult back, he stepped forward, the gold rings of his staff jingling. Sango threw an arm out, stopping him.

“Whoa, hold on. If Kagome was able to pull him through, can he come back?”

Jaken was now hopping nervously from one foot to the other, sputtering under his breath. He didn't like where the conversation was heading. Surely the miko wouldn't expose her plans to them? Go back on the promises that she had made to him? It wasn't possible…

Kikyo shot him a swift, quieting look, then reset her impassive gaze back to Sango.

“Of course, I'll just bring him back when I retrieve Lord Sesshomaru.” She informed them.

“By using the amulet?” Sango pushed.

It was time for the secrecy to end and bring the situation to a head. Kikyo was the one who sent Jaken to search out the Amulet of Ages, she and Miroku had witnessed that much. Sango wasn't going to let Kikyo hide it any longer; it was time for answers.

“Yes.” Kikyo said simply.

Sango was taken aback by her blatant admission.

“So what was all the secrecy for? Why not admit it was you who sent Jaken?” Miroku asked, still slightly abashed at being insulted.

Sometimes being a soulless corpse, empty of emotion, came in handy, like now when Kikyo pulled out all the stops. They would never be able to read her while she stood here, lying to them.

“I am almost ashamed to admit it,” she sighed, “but I may need to use the amulet to help keep the time barrier open longer than my own spiritual powers will allow…”

Jaken's humungous eyes popped violently at the miko's ease of lying.

“…my strength is not what it once was.” She finished.

Rin put a finger up under her chin, looking puzzled.

“But, didn't Inuyasha say something about Master Jaken dying so Lord Sesshomaru could get back?”

Sango caught Kikyo blanch for a fleetingly brief second, then recover with a cool smile lifting the corner of her lips. She looked softly upon the little girl.

“Yes, that is correct. A sacrifice must be made to use the amulet.” She explained.

Rin looked like Kikyo had just hauled off and slapped her across the face. Tears welled up in her big brown eyes.

“No! I don't want Master Jaken to die!”

Jaken looked at the child, touched that she showed such concern for him. He could suddenly see why Lord Sesshomaru was so taken with her; she was genuinely a precious, loving child…

Kikyo shook her head sadly, her black hair sweeping her back as she did so. The last thing that she wanted to do was worry the little girl, yet it couldn't be helped at this point.

“I'm sorry, that's the price that must be paid.”

Sango still glared at her.

“Kaede said a chanted incantation by a powerful monk or miko would be enough to keep the portal open. She never mentioned an amulet.”

“Hai, it is true. However, the spiritual power I invoke may not be enough.” Kikyo told them.

She didn't appear to be easing the demon slayers mind, so she put the most convincing smile she could muster onto her clay face.

“Look, if I don't have to use the amulet, I won't. Does that suit you?”

Sango looked over at Miroku, who exchanged her doubtful look. The fact that Kikyo had even amused the idea of a sacrificial offering was a blow. The Kikyo that they had known wouldn't ever think of human death in a means to open a time portal; what had changed?

“No,” Miroku finally said, “if your powers don't work, we'll find another way, death is not an option…not even Jaken's.”

Again, Jaken was moved at the outward display of generosity being thrown his direction. A twinge of guilt began to tug at his conscious. Could he have been wrong to aid Kikyo in her deceitful plot? Was any price too great to have Lord Sesshomaru returned to him? He hadn't thought so, but…

Starting out once more, the bright afternoon sun beating down on the group, the Southern Shrine was now mere hours from them.

Kikyo, still bringing up the rear, scowled at the backs of the monk and demon slayer.

Those damn prayer beads were linking Inuyasha to Kagome, even across centuries of separation. She'd been foolish to overlook that.

Kagome could now call Inuyasha to her whenever she wanted. This made the miko an even bigger threat to Kikyo. Hopefully, the unknowingly clever girl hadn't discovered how to return him. If so, Kikyo's hopes were lost, if not, she could still play her cards…

She'd open the doorway via the shrine's powers, pull Sesshomaru and Inuyasha back through first then just as Kagome was passing through, she'd invoke the amulet's power, sealing the powers of the shrine forever. Kagome would then be trapped in between both times.

The price expected by the spirits would be paid, Kagome, unbeknownst to her, would forfeit her life. A small price, in Kikyo's mind; Inuyasha had grown too fond of the girl. This was something Kikyo could no longer allow.

She alone would possess Inuyasha's heart; she alone would be Inuyasha's future, just like she had been all those years ago.

In a few short hours, Kagome wouldn't be an obstacle, in her time or theirs, to Kikyo any longer…
