Chapter Thirteen
The blazing mid afternoon sun was now relentlessly beating down upon the traveling entourage as the sparkling ocean grew ever larger before them.
Jaken, having taken Shippo's place behind Rin atop Aun, hashed over all the happenings since undertaking Kikyo's request, in his mind.
There was simply nothing he wouldn't do to get his Lord Sesshomaru back; yet a nagging doubt had taken seed in the back of his brain.
Kikyo had put on a sure fire, straight faced lie to Inuyasha's human companions without batting an eye. What if she'd been lying to him as well? If her intent was to have Inuyasha as hers, did she truly care about bringing Sesshomaru back to him and Rin? How was a dead woman able to care at all? He wondered.
What could he do now? He'd already retrieved the Amulet of Ages from within its hiding place; he'd set the wheels of her strategy in motion.
He should've never been swayed by her; never let her convince him that she was on his side…
`only if you help me can I return Lord Sesshomaru to you…fetch the Amulet of Ages for me and I can bring about much more; your lord will praise you…'
`Deceptive witch,' he cursed inwardly.
She had no real concern for Sesshomaru, Jaken was sure. It appeared her main objective was to rid herself of the oddly dressed miko; to have Inuyasha all to herself.
Not only did he find this selfish, but the thought itself left a sour taste on the amphibious youkai's tongue. How disgusting…
Yet, no matter his opinion of Inuyasha and his fellow comrades, Lord Sesshomaru was still the focal point. The miko was of no help, he knew this without a shadow of a doubt now.
He leaned forward, after casting casual glances at the miko, monk and demon slayer, who now had the kitsune perched upon her shoulder, his lips near Rin's ear, whispering.
“Don't say anything, Rin, just listen to me…”
Kikyo, now leading the small band, turned off the main trail they'd followed down from the north onto a narrow path leading to a more eastern direction.
She almost felt and coveted more of the thrill of adrenaline, had she had any in her clay body, coursing through her. Her soul collectors had rejoined her, dropping more of the eerie glowing souls into her lifeless form. For some reason, she felt stronger than usual, as if her body once again possessed its own soul…
It wasn't far now; she reached up to the amulet, which now hung around her throat. There was now no need to hide the beautiful aquamarine gem now that its presence was known.
Soon she'd be able to pay off the debt to the spirits with Kagome's life…
“Hey! I think I see something over there!” she heard Sango's voice from above. Glancing up Kikyo saw her pointing in the general direction of where the shrine should be.
A slight smile pulled up the corners of Kikyo's lips. She was feeling more alive with every approaching step.
`Soon, my love, nothing will come between us ever again…'
Sesshomaru led Inuyasha from rooftop to rooftop through the city. His nose wrinkled with distaste at the odor. He moved in the direction in which he knew the amulet was housed.
Kagome clung to Inuyasha's back, his silver hair whipping around her face. She could see Sota dangling from under Sesshomaru's arm.
“That bastard!” she heard Inuyasha growl.
He was just as infuriated at Sesshomaru for using Sota as bait as she was; yet Kagome felt an unwanted, almost sympathetic sense of understanding. Since their abrupt return to the future, Kagome had come to see that Sesshomaru loved Rin as a father loves his daughter. She was pretty sure that he was still unaware of his emotion…
Sesshomaru had claimed Rin as `his', he obviously viewed himself as her parent which made his anxiousness in returning to her logical. That didn't make this attempt to persuade her to find the amulet and use Sota as a hostage acceptable! She flared up at the thought.
Sesshomaru came to a stop, turning to Inuyasha, who'd just alighted from the previous building, fixing them with a bold, self-assured look.
“Let the boy go, Sesshomaru!” Inuyasha ordered.
Sesshomaru smirked.
“I don't think so,” and with a graceful leap, bounded from the roof down into the oncoming traffic in the intersection below.
Kagome shrieked as a small car, brakes squealing, tried to stop at the sudden appearance of Sesshomaru in the middle of the street.
The flashing whip from Sesshomaru's fingertips forced the car off course, crashing into another. Rolling over, it skidded some thirty feet and came to a stop, still upside down.
Inuyasha was down among the bustle instantly.
“Knock it off, Sesshomaru!”
Sesshomaru looked passed his irksome hanyou brother to Kagome.
“Worried for him?” he indicated to the limp form of Sota, hanging like a rag doll under his arm.
“Come with me and I shall release him.”
Kagome, face set, eyes just as piercing as the gold ones proposing the trade, climbed down from Inuyasha's back. What choice did she really have…?
“Kagome! Don't!” Inuyasha shouted at her.
“I have to, Inuyasha. I can't let Sota get hurt,” she explained, her eyes trained to her helpless brother.
She moved to step out into the street, to swap herself for her kid brother. Inuyasha cut in front of her, placing his hands on her shoulders.
“No, Kagome, please…”
She was startled, staring at him with confused arched eyebrows. His voice sounded desperate, almost pleading.
“I…I can't lose you again…” he stammered, his golden eyes suddenly soft, begging her to not leave him.
Her eyes widened slightly. Did he want to say that he…?
A tch-ing sound came from Sesshomaru.
“Well, then, I guess I'll have to try and barter for the amulet with this boy's life.”
Another bound and he leapt from the pavement, luring them ever closer to the amulets resting place.
Authors Note: Another reminder that I don't own Inuyasha, Rumiko Takahashi does. Thanks for reading!
