Chapter Nineteen
Sesshomaru's muzzle shrunk into the nose and jaw of his handsome face, his four-legged form becoming two. Rin's kimono slipped from between his clenched teeth, he caught her in his arms, cradling her to him.
His eyes were transfixed to the demolished heap that had just been the Southern Shrine. So, he thought irritably, Inuyasha's modern miko did have more spiritual power than he had originally credited her with. He knew of no mortal that could've passed through time with the amulet and wield it to cancel out its own power.
Of course, he assumed that she probably discovered how to use it in that old book her grandfather had given her, yet it still took immense inner strength to use power like that. Cross with himself, he found her…unduly impressive.
He felt his innards curdle; she must truly love his brother. Disgusting.
The small shifting body of Rin, slipping her arms around his torso, brought his gaze from the shrine debris to her. He tightened his hold on her, nestling her to his chest. Sesshomaru quietly thanked the spirits for her safety, as Jaken resumed his role as pesky henchman, buzzing around at his feet.
The stoic youkai shot Inuyasha's troop a quick glance. They were absorbed in their own conversation, the women embraced happily. He simply took leave from the scene, his mind in contemplative speculation. When and how had that depraved creature managed to plant a larva in Kikyo?
He'd probably never know, nor did he really care, however, Sesshomaru had to admit, it was a stroke of genius on Naraku's part. Keeping a piece of himself in slumbered suspension, tucked away and nurtured off the souls that fed Kikyo. Knowing that when and if his true body was destroyed, the parasite would come to life, feeding off its host. Naraku would then be restored to life.
As Sesshomaru's figure darkened, vanishing into the northern forest, he shook his head. Naraku had once again underestimated Kikyo. By tainting her with evil, he transformed her true love for Inuyasha into a maniacal envy. What was with his brother's ability to attract senseless mikos?
Rin rested an exhausted cheek against her lord's chest. He felt a delighted smile curl at the corners of his lips. Unconsciously, he actually cuddled her closer. Emotions were such a bother; fortunately he had so few to contend with…

Kagome gave Sango, Miroku, and Shippo quick hugs, her eyes swimming in salty tears, wishing she had more time with them.
“I'm sorry, I've got to go…” she choked.
Inuyasha stood, feeling beaten, as he watched her head towards the vanishing portal.
It had been bad enough leaving her the first time, now they had to do it all over again, watching her leave and saying good bye was harder than facing any frenzied youkai.
He felt a failure. He couldn't say what he wanted to the woman he loved, and on top of that, Kikyo was dead. He had once again come up short in his ability to save her from that filthy youkai's plan…he lost both of them…
Kagome had no link to him any longer, that truth alone hit harder than any as he followed her to the windy opening that was already half its original size. He could feel his friend's eyes boring them from behind. Why was this so hard? Why was letting her return to her happy life, so damn disheartening?
She stopped, turning towards him, he watched her soft, dark hair swing, draping over her shoulder. Say it you fool! No! Then she'd not want to go home, where she belongs! I can't ask her to make that kind of decision…his internal battle was beginning to sicken him.
“Inuyasha…” “Kagome…” they spoke in unison.
The wind was dying as the hole shrunk, Kagome knew she had to hurry, but was held, captured by his golden stare.
She took half a step backwards towards the opening.
“I…I'm sorry about Kikyo…” she told him. Her heart was hammering furiously against her ribcage. She had to tell him now. Regardless of the fact that he'd always loved Kikyo more, she couldn't face the rest of her life without at least making her feelings known to him.
“Oh…” he began.
Then, he saw it. Like a bucket of ice water washing over him, alerting him to the truth. The answer that had been eluding him since he first became aware that he was in love with Kagome. She would return to her life, her happy life and it wouldn't include him. She'd create a future with someone else; he'd be a mere memory to her. He wanted more, to be more than that to her. Whether or not she felt the same, he wanted the chance to be more, to win her over forever. Why didn't he realize this earlier…?
“Inuyasha,” she backed closer to the black hole, now a square window of time.
“Kagome…”
Their eyes were locked, hearts echoing in their ears. Behind them, their friends watched with bated breath to see what decisions would be made in the next brief moments.
“I love you!” they shouted in sync, as Kagome stepped backwards, into the portal, feeling the pressure as it pulled at her, wanting to suck her in and back to her time.
In the nanosecond it took to process each others expressions of love, Kagome's eyes popped at his confession, as his did. She pulled against the consuming pressure, reaching her hand out to him, wanting to touch him one time, now knowing that he loved her; time, however, stands still for no one, it swallowed her.
Inuyasha lunged for her vanishing hand, brushing her fingertips as they followed the rest of her disappearing form down the throat of the time portal…
