A/N: This is NOT the beta-read version, once I it's been beta-read, I'll re-post it so until then please ignore any and all grammar/spelling errors, okay?

A/N: Nasty cliffie last time eh? Well, that is what you get when you don't review enough! Ahahahahahah!! Anyway, from now on, unless I receive a minimum of 5 reviews per update, then there will be a cliffhanger in the next chapter… unless it is a chapter where nothing important happens yet… but if it is an important chapter, like the battle scene in the last one, then there will be a cliffie.

Now, for those who don't keep track of this story, it will be very hard to determine if there have been 5 new reviews or not… and that is the point, if you want to play it safe, review. Just a simple “Good fic, update soon!” or “Good chapter” will do nicely, even bad reviews and constructive criticism are welcome but if you flame… oh boy, do I have a special response in store for you, heheheh…

To put it simply:

5 reviews = Cliffie free chapter

Not enough reviews = Expect a heavy cliffie

Understood? If not, too bad! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

WARNINGS: Death, blood and action, need I say more? Oh yeah, NOT FOR THOSE UNDER 18… though, that hasn't stopped anyone in the past so why should it work now? LOL… Just remember that you are reading at your own risk!

Disclaimer: I don't own anything that's related to Inuyasha, I do own Arc though and if someone intends to copy him without my permission I'll F*** you up!

Chapter 22: =Battle Cry of the Awakening Demon=

It came as such a shock that no one who saw it could believe it… they could not react at all, the shock of it happening was just too huge… that insect had just… killed Arcerdo…

The cloud of dust was still up, so they couldn't see it, but neither did they want to see it either… because if they did see it, it would probably come true too.

It was just so hard to believe that just now, just like that, an insect Youkai had killed Arcerdo… the young man who had helped them without asking anything in return, who had fought with his life to defend them, he was killed just like that.

Sumira was one of the three who had the hardest time believing it had happened, she knew Arcerdo was a quarter Youkai and immensely powerful one at that too, not to mention he had had a heart more human than most humans do and… she just found it hard to believe he had been killed just like that…

Renko was the other one who found it hard to believe, she had talked to Arcerdo and had seen not just the sadness in his heart, but also the strength that was there… the kind of strength that someone who the gods favour could possibly have, a person who has something important to do, yet… now…

But, the third one out of these three had by far the hardest possible time believing it…

As Chizu had seen her `hero', Arcerdo being tossed into the air by that monster, how he had flown high into the air completely helpless and how that monster went after him and… killed him…

The shock that had hit Chizu right into her heart was something she could not take, she had believed Arcerdo to be a guardian dog who could not lose, who would protect them… and now…

Tears were forming in her eyes, the pain of loss was rearing in faster and harder… then, as the cloud of dust kicked up from the impact of the insects and Arcerdo's onto the ground, all she could do was scream out as loud as she possibly could with tears flowing freely from her eyes: “ARCERDO-SAMA!!!”

As she screamed that out, her initial reaction was to run out there to him, but Renko saw this and immediately clutched her daughter onto herself, hearing her crying for Arcerdo and struggling to get out of her mothers grip, while Renko herself couldn't help but feel her eyes slowly starting to form tears as well from the sheer emotion that her daughters voice held.

For Hanataro, it was a shock that went directly through his mind into his spine, and from there to his legs, causing them to fail as he fell onto his knees while holding onto the sliding door of the shrine, muttering to himself as his mind kept drawing blanks: “He's… he's dead…? That… that can't be… it just can't be…”

He just couldn't believe how a person so, noble, could die just like that… it was just too hard for him to understand how this could happen.

As for the Moon priests, Flint was both pleased and as well as frustrated because of this, one side of him was pleased to see that warrior wannabe dead for all the humiliations he had caused for him but the other half of him was frustrated and disappointed because he didn't get the chance to do kill him himself, so he thought to himself: `Hmph… idiot, got killed before I had the chance to kill him… oh well, weaklings aren't really worthy to be killed by me anyway… but still, how dare he humiliate me like that and then die before I can get revenge.'

Jei, well, he just looked at the dust cloud and offered silent prayers for Arcerdo… since even though he had been somewhat disrespecting towards them, he had still fought like a warrior to the end, and when one is dead, there is reason to mock them. So, he offered silent prayers to his soul.

Arbel… well, he couldn't say or think a damn thing, because he still had hard time just realising what had happened: Arcerdo had saved his life at the cost of his own… but, even though he was too shocked to do or think about anything, his mind was able to replay the image of his face when he had tossed him to the shrine, the look in his eyes when he did it… the look he had in them, showed so much regret, as if he knew that by doing what he did, he would lose many things important to him… yet, despite that, he still did it, even with all those looks of regret, he still did it…

All they could do at that moment was to stand there, shocked from what had happened… but… that would not last for long.

*Where Heitaro is*

Heitaro looked at what had happened with a raised eyebrow, then thought to himself while rubbing his chin: `Now, that was unexpected… that stranger sacrificed his own life to save the life of one of his enemies, how very interesting. Oh well, when I get back to the master, I will offer my prayers to his actions, self-sacrifice is something that not everyone can do, and he fought to the bitter end, I will honour that.'

Then, with his mission complete to observe the stranger, Arcerdo, he started to get ready to leave, by taking out the orb he used to teleport when he had talked before…

But then, just as he was about to use it, his instincts and senses picked up something… and as soon as they did, he felt an immense surge of energy passing through him as well.

Heitaro stilled his movements immediately, since the surge of energy that had passed through his body just now, was something he had felt before, no more than a year ago.

However… the thing about this surge of energy, what made him still all his movement and even make his hand tremble slightly, was not the power behind it, immense as it felt, but because the [soul pulse] behind it was almost identical to the one from year ago… and that, was impossible…

The pulse was slightly different, but the core of it was the same, which is why it was impossible… no core of the pulse is ever identical, yet this one…

He put the orb away and looked towards the source of the pulse he felt, and despite his mind reasoning it was impossible, neither his eyes nor his instincts were lying to him: The source of this immense, cold, powerful and primal pulse was…

… Arcerdo.

The dust cloud still covered the scene, so he didn't know what was going on, but, despite his body slightly trembling from the memories of when he had first met this soul pulse, he thought with a grin: `Now this… this is… something beyond what I could have expected, this is… amazing… now, show me, Arcerdo, show me what you hide underneath yourself, show me…'

*Where Kedaru is*

Not too far from the battlefield, Kedaru stilled his movement too as he felt the same surge of energy as Heitaro had… and just for a moment, he felt fear rushing through him, making him talk to himself: “What…? What was that just now? That immense surge of energy…? There is someone with this level of power in the area, and I did not know it? How is this…?”

But, the fear that he felt soon dissipated and he began to laugh to himself, then continued his walking and kept talking: “Keäh, it doesn't matter who it is… the guardians are more than enough to handle whoever it is, and even if they are not, they will still wear him completely out and when I get there, I'll teach whoever it is not to mess with me, the hard way… hahahahaha… interesting, let's see what these puny beings can do against me when I get there…”

*Back on the battlefield*

Jei and Sumira were the first ones to feel it, in the middle of being shocked by what had happened they had felt it… the sudden, violent pulse of energy.

Flint and Arbel were the next ones to feel it, as the pulse of energy became stronger with each second… and what both failed to notice at the moment they felt it was that their arms began to tremble from the feel of it, not because of how strong it was, but because of the sheer, cold, intense and controlled killing intent that followed it.

It was indescribable what it felt like exactly, but if needed to put into words, it felt like something unstoppable had just been unleashed… no, not unstoppable, but more like, something `inevitable' had just began, like this was something that could not be avoided, something that would happen no matter how much you struggle against it.

It was confusing, but that is what it felt like.

Then, if that wasn't enough to spook them, what they saw happen next certainly did spook them… well, except Jei, who did not faze easily, but when he too saw what happened next, he couldn't help but wonder whether this was a miracle from god… or the work of the devil.

It happened so suddenly, all they did was see something shining move in the dust cloud, followed by a loud sound of flesh tearing… and then… they saw it, the two things that made them wonder the same things Jei did.

All of a sudden, without any warning, a very large body of flesh flew out of the dust cloud and rammed against the barrier, scaring just about everyone inside the shrine… and the body, that had rammed against the barrier…

… Was the body of the huge insect, which had attacked and `killed' Arcerdo.

The condition of the body was also something that made them all stop whatever they were thinking, even Chizu went completely quiet when she saw it, her young mind not sure whether to be afraid or something else instead… the body looked like it had been butchered, one of the sabre like arms was missing, half of its head was gone, its chest seemed like it had been cut open with extremely hot, sharp blades, half of its wings were also shredded and its other arms looked like it was about to fall off any second…

And the most disturbing thing about this was that…

… It was still alive.

It was twitching, making weird gurgling sounds, and the spot where the arm was severed was bleeding quite rapidly, its face looked like something out of a zombie horror movie and the chest, even though the wounds were burned shut, they could still see the entrails inside, some of them sticking out, burned and crispy…

And the stench… the stench of its flesh sizzling against the barrier, was making them all feel weak to their stomachs.

As a result, Hanataro and Arbel both threw up, and Chizu hid her face against her mother, trembling.

Then, as the dust began to settle down, they all saw a figure standing there… holding something that looked like the insects missing arm. This time, Jei could not hold back a look of surprise, because when his senses confirmed to him that the source of the immense pulses of energy, the violent, cold and lethal aura that he had felt, where in fact coming out of that figure… who he knew all too well right now, he couldn't help but feel a slight shiver of fear before squashing it run through his being, forcing him to think: `How is this… possible…? This aura, this energy, he can't be the source of them, no… this aura, this energy, there is no doubt about it, and no human could possibly posses them, for this energy, it is without a doubt, it is none other than…'

Then, when the dust finally cleared enough for them to see the figures facial features, they couldn't help but gasp in both fear and shock, except for Chizu, who was still hiding her face. Even Sumira, who had know that Arcerdo wasn't human, couldn't help but feel afraid the moment he saw him…

The hair was still steel grey, though it looked more beastial…

Over both his eyes, there were three deep, black stripes in shape of wolf like claw marks…

As they saw his hands, they had become slightly scaly, with small amounts of silver fur growing out of them; his nails had become silver coloured claws as well…

And lastly, his pupils… they had become beast like slits and were glowing with silver, almost celestial looking colour; the eyes themselves had become dark red, darker than blood was.

When he saw this, Jei could not believe it… it was just not possible, how could this be possible? There were just so many things that made this go against all laws of reason, against everything they knew about things.

Then, he finished the thought he had: `… You-ki… demon energy… Youkai…'

For Hanataro, this had been a shock like nothing else… and for a reason too, the noble person, who had helped them and asked nothing in return, was a… Youkai…?

But for Arbel, this was something that, literally, tore him in half… this person, who had risked his life to save his, who had such regret filled eyes, who had been nothing short of a benevolent person… had been a Youkai all this time? But, it didn't make sense, if he was a Youkai, how did he pass through the barrier around the village before it was shattered? How did the sacred ground not affect him in any way? And lastly… how… how could he have had holy powers?! It made no sense!

And as for Flint… well, he wasn't sure at all what to believe anymore, what the hell was he?! A Youkai, human… or the devil…? Because, that is what it looked like and felt like to him at the moment, when he stared at those cold, murderous silver and red eyes, and with him standing there in the settling dust, holding a severed insects arm, with his eyes and aura… it literally looked and felt like to Flint that he had gone to hell and met the devil. They had killed plenty of Youkai to this day, yet this one… this was the one Youkai, who he admitted to himself, scared him to the very core of his soul.

*On the battlefield with Arcerdo*

It was beyond words to explain what it felt like, for his Youkai side to awaken and take full control… there were no words to explain the feeling of power that surged through every last part of his being, the feeling of it pulsing through his hands, legs, heart, mind… it was like an ancient instinct, long ago forgotten, had awakened from slumber more older than life itself and was now consuming his senses, mind and soul.

§ The heartbeat of awakening… but of what: Our saviour or our destroyer? §

All his instincts, senses and knowledge of battle felt like they had ascended to a level that would forever be beyond his reach, he could hear everything, see everything, feel everything… from the slightest breeze on his skin to the feeling of his blood rushing in his veins, he could smell the smallest particles in the air, no matter how miniscule, he could hear the sounds in the wind, as they carried them over the plains, mountains and forests, he could even hear the heartbeat of all living creatures around him.

§ The eyes of the awakened one are looking at the world around it… what does it see through those eyes…? §

The fire in his veins, the power that was the legacy from times of old, from the times of war and great Youkai lords… it filled his every particle with their immense, primal power: His muscles had become like steel, his blood had turned into fire of battle, his mind had become that of a Youkai warrior, his You-ki now rivalled that of a demon from hell, and his holy powers… he could feel them, deep inside his soul, as if protecting something there.

§ The time of birth had come and gone, now it was time of the awakening, awakening to the world… but what has awoken? Is it hope, or is it terror? §

But, even though the awakening felt like this, it also felt like he was losing something… but his mind did not pay any heed to it, because now, his mind was being filled with something else, a feeling, an urge, a command from somewhere deep in his mind was rushing out like an angry river through a floodgate…

… Feeling of hate

… Feeling of murder

… The need to kill, to make those around him suffer

… He did not resist it, for there was nothing left in him that could resist

§ The awakened one abandoned its humanity, to experience the awakening, it let go of its humanity… or was it even a human to begin with? §

As he turned to look at the three remaining enemies, the annoying, stinking insects that dared to attack him, yes… they would suffice, he would enjoy it greatly when he tore them into pieces, like the one he had killed just now.

For he had awakened, he did not talk, he did not smile, grin, or frown… he merely stood, his eyes full of cold hate and killing intent. If he had to describe the feeling into words on what this felt like, then there was only one word that could describe it:

Resurrection…

He did not make a sound, but, the feeling of impeding battle in his veins, the knowledge that soon he could fight to his fullest… made it impossible to stay quiet, so as his eyes looked at his three opponents, he bared his fangs, lowered his head and after a few seconds, suddenly raised it towards the sky, and let out a battle cry.

It echoed far away, but, even though he was a inu-Youkai, the battle cry, it sounded nothing like that of a dog roaring… it sounded more like an ancient voice, echoing from an abyss with endless depth, literally, to those who heard it… it sounded like a twisted howl from hell itself.

§ The cry of the awakening… what does it entail? Is it the cry of that of darkness, or that of light? Time will tell…for nothing is decided upon ones birth§

*Where Heitaro is*

As the battle cry echoed throughout the battlefield, Heitaro could not help close one of his eyes and grit his teeth from the pain that was caused when he heard it, yet, as the howl died down, he couldn't decide how to feel… should he be scared, or excited? This had been a turn he had not foreseen or could ever have guessed, Arcerdo had been a Youkai all this time?

It both made sense and did not make sense at the same time, the part that made sense was that how fast he had recovered, how he had been able to push himself like that, why the aura around him felt so strange and how he had been able to cut that guardian into pieces without his swords…

But, the parts that did not make sense were that where on earth had he come from? It was clear that he was either a hanyou, or some form of half-breed, but how could he be this strong? This was not normal You-ki…

No…

No this was the You-ki of that of a Tai-Youkai, perhaps even greater! So, where had he come from?!

Then, how did he make it through the barrier that had surrounded the village? Kedaru had to destroy it before getting through but Arcerdo here had just walked through it like it had not been there at all, then the sacred ground where they were right now, it had had absolutely no effect on him, positive or negative.

Lastly, the king of all things that made no sense… how in the name of seven hells did he posses holy powers?! Holy power and You-ki the exact opposite elements, like fire and water, so how could he posses both powers like this, without being in immense pain, or better yet, how did he survive even being born? During the Youkai war 20 years ago, there had been cases where a Youkai had raped a priestess that caused the priestess to become pregnant with a hanyou… in most cases, the priestess had the hanyou killed at the womb, but in some rare cases, where the priestess believed in the sanctity of life, gave birth to the hanyou, but it always ended the same way.

The hanyou always died during the last months of the pregnancy, along with the priestess, for holy powers and You-ki do not mix, they ended up destroying one another.

Which is why, this made absolutely no sense to Heitaro, how did Arcerdo posses holy powers and You-ki at the same time!? Especially right now, with the You-ki being this strong, this dark, this lethal… why did the holy powers not rise up against it?

As those thoughts kept rolling back and forth in his head, he grinned and said to himself: “You are just too full of surprises, Arcerdo… however, it seems like you are walking on dangerous grounds now, I wonder… are you in control of that demon side of yours, or is it in control of you? Hehehe, show me now, Arcerdo, show me if this is your true self, or not.”

*Where Kedaru is*

As for Kedaru, the howl just now was something that actually scared him, yet it did not waver him from his destination, instead, it made him all the more curious on just who could let out such an in-human howl… for if he heard right, that was the howl of a demon about to enter battle.

He laughed to himself; this was getting more and more interesting by the second.

*Back on the battlefield*

The now fully demon Arcerdo looked at the three insects, the howl he had let out would have scared anyone to the core of their being, yet these three had not reacted at all… this puzzled him, deeply, did these insects know no fear? Were they brave or just plain stupid…? Yes, that must be the answer; they are too stupid to know what fear is all about… and also, the stench they emit, it is obvious these things are not alive, or to be accurate, their bodies move but there is no soul inside them, simple yet effective method.

Take away the soul, they lose their ability to be independent completely, no free will or free actions but, in return they feel absolutely nothing, no pain, no fear, no joy, nothing.

Yet, despite them not being alive, there was something about them that just didn't fit into this picture: if they were soulless, how did they posses the ability to regenerate from damage that would kill no matter what sort of regenerative powers you posses?

Normally, he would be puzzled about how he knew these things, but that was the thing, he was not in his normal state, he was in a state where instincts and subconscious actions were the ones in command, not his human reasoning.

He would be frightened, if he were conscious about what he was feeling right now, this state of eagerness to kill, this state of cold calmness even though his blood was burning…

However, his thoughts were interrupted when one of the insects suddenly opened its wings and started its attack run towards him.

As the insect approached with immense speed, Arcerdo's You-ki flared up and he took a stance, signalling he was ready for battle. As he did this, his eyes landed onto his two swords firmly planted onto the ground, there was a small distance between them and him, but that wouldn't be a problem.

When the insect came right in front of him, its right sabre like hand coming from towards him horizontally, Arcerdo let go of the insect arm he was holding and crouched down, low enough to avoid the sabre like hand completely, feeling the rush of air passing over him as it moved over him with immense speed, yet, in his eyes, it was moving in slow motion.

Then, as he could hear his own heartbeat in his ears, stable and normal as always, his eyes narrowed, his fangs were bared and when the insects arm was in the right position after passing him, he moved his right clawed hand so fast it was hard to determine if it had moved at all, but it had, his claws went straight onto the root of the insects arm with lethal precision… and slashed it off.

The insect felt no pain, which was creepy, considering its arm had just been cut off, but then again, even if it could feel pain, it would not have time to feel it because Arcerdo was now moving more faster than anyone could have thought possible.

It was so hard to describe just how fast he was moving, but in our terms, it would be like this: Everything was moving in slow motion, but he himself wasn't.

As he slashed the insects arm off, and blood began to spew out of the wound, yet, before the first spurts of blood even had time to reach the ground, or the arm that was severed to get any kind of distance from the body it was separated from, Arc quickly spanned a full 360 degrees so fast it caused quite an amazing rush of wind around him, outstretched his leg and performed a spin kick right into the gut of the insect. Upon contact, the force of impact and the You-ki he had focused onto the kick to give it more strength, caused a massive shock like wave to burst from the point of the impact… or to be more accurate, it was like Arcerdo had just broken the sound barrier, or to be more accurate, he had just kicked the insect more faster than the speed of sound.

The insect flew from the force of the impact, and as it had reached a little distance away from Arcerdo, he quickly grabbed the severed arm that was still falling towards the ground before it reached it, and with immense force and speed, threw it like a spear towards the insect, aiming for its chest.

Then, as if defying the laws of physics and whatever laws of nature or whatnot there were, he grabbed the other severed arm he had let go a second ago, and quickly moved, leaving after images of him behind but the speed he moved with was unreal, he actually PASSED both the arm he had thrown and the insect he had just kicked, moved behind it and then did something that would most likely give nightmares to Arbel and Hanataro for quite a long time to come.

Before the insect could recover from the kick, it felt the arm that had been severed and thrown towards it hitting its chest, penetrating it, going through the back and then stopping, yet, before blood could begin to spew from the entry and exit wound, its body began to bend from the force of the sabre like claws penetrating it, Arcerdo took the other severed arm and… skewered the insect, the sabre like claws going through the lower back and coming out through the stomach, the force of both the kick and first arm hitting the upper chest pushed both of them backwards quite a bit, Arcs legs forming skid marks onto the ground, yet he held the sabre like arm still until they both came to a stop.

It looked like a picture from hell, Arcerdo, standing beneath the insect, both its upper and lower body skewered, green, stinky blood spewing and gushing out like crazy, it's body twitching and struggling until falling completely limb, not because of the wounds, but because it ran out of blood to bleed.

After it was dead, Arcerdo looked at it with his cold, silver red eyes, then he let go of the arm he had used as a skewering spear… but before the insect could fall down, he used his claws and severed the whole insect in two from its other rib to the other, just to make sure it stayed dead.

Yet, despite all the blood that had spilled, not even one drop had touched him, not even his claws.

Then his eyes landed on the two remaining insects, his You-ki flared up and he growled at them, that had been too easy, not nearly enough to satisfy his need for battle, nor enough to sate this feeling of immense hate that coursed through him, hate that didn't seem to have an end… then, he let out another battle cry, almost as bad as the first one, and took off running towards the remaining two insects, claws stretched and ready to kill…

As they all saw this happening, they all couldn't help but think the same thing:

= What kind of a monster is he…? =

To Be Continued

“The demon in me is loose…

The first blood has been spilled…

But how much more has to be spilled…?

… Or worse yet, whose blood is it that will be spilled?”

- Arcerdo Higurashi

Next chapter: = The Path of Asura =

A/N: There we go, now things are fully heated and ready to rock… hehehe, if this was an evil cliffie from your opinion, then by all means review and I won't make another! LOL

Anyway, thank you all who reviewed and gave me the energy to write this, the next chapter is going to full of battle and gore. Yet, will Arcerdo be able to return to his normal self? Or will he remain as a cold, lethal monster? We shall see.

PS: for those who wonder, the name “Asura” (At least, that's how it was written where I found it) refers to a sub-human demon that revels in war and hatred, it is said that once a warriors take this path, there is no hope of them ever coming back from it and they become nothing short of beasts who only find joy in killing, hate and war.

[Soul pulse]: This is something that only Heitaro can feel, why, will be explained later in the story. A soul pulse is basically a certain, never ending pulse like feeling that the soul emanates, much like heartbeat, except that each soul pulse is different from one another, there are no two identical ones. This way, Heitaro can always remember who the person is by the pulse their souls emit.
