Belonging
Chapter 14 - Interludes
Inuyasha had to get the tape from security at the club. The only thing was he didn't know when he would be able to get up enough strength to actually go. His body was still screaming at him, which lead to a very painful headache.
It was still early in the morning but he had no idea if someone from the Wolves would care enough to see what happened to him last night. It didn't really needed to be known right now that Kagome was a miko. Kikyo knew and already the girl's life was danger.
Inuyasha couldn't take the chance of someone finding out before he told them so he decided to give the club a call. He struggled to pickup the phone and dial the numbers.
"Hello Pussycat Club." A sweet, sultry female voice greeted him. It was Lieth, a nice 20-year old girl from Kyoto studying at the university to be a doctor.
"This is Inuyasha."
"Oh Inuyasha what could I do for you?" Her voice changed from sultry to innocent and light. He had had many talks with her and knew she considered him a friend after he took it upon himself to save her from Kouga. His friend had yet to totally forgive him for that rescue.
"Connect me to security, please."
"Okay hold please."
"Security. Myugi Jiro speaking." A man's tired voice answered. Inuyasha would have guessed he would be tired. The Pussycat Club was open nearly 24 hours a day and although security had shifts and time off each officer had to work at least 12-14 hours a day. The work was long and sometimes hard when customers got out of hand but the employees were greatly compensated with high wages and large benefits.
"This is Takashi Inuyasha. Jiro can you do me a favor?" Inuyasha asked getting straight to business.
"Sure anything Mr. Takashi." The man was slightly nervous; Inuyasha could hear the apprehension in his voice.
"I need you to take the security tape from last night and destroy it."
"Sure but can I ask -"
"No you can't ask why. I just need you to do it." Inuyasha interrupted with. No options were to be left open for the officer. The hanyou sweetened to deal with a special bonus for the man. "If you do I'll make sure the girls at the club are extra nice to you. Now can I trust you to do this?"
"Y-yes Mr. Takashi."
"And Jiro if I find out you didn't I'll have to see you personally. And if that happens then I'll make sure the last thing you ever see is me." Tapping on a threat at the end never hurt. It was just a way to make sure that what he wanted was done.
"That won't be necessary Mr. Takashi. I will destroy that tape right away." The anxious man rushed out.
"Thank you" he said and promptly hung up.
Inuyasha lay there on his couch thinking, which had become his pastime, of Kagome. Not because he wanted to or anything but because her scent was still their lingering in his living room and it was hard to not to think about her. He was thinking not only about her but the situation that was happening now. He wished she wasn't a miko. Not because his brother was going to use her but because of Kikyo.
I know she doesn't like this. She'll want to do something about it.
Inuyasha already knew Kikyo knew what really happened last night. They were bonded together through a spell she had cast long ago when they were younger and too stupid to think about consequences. He didn't necessarily dislike the spell in fact more then once it had saved one of them from some dire situation that seemed to have no hope.
It was just in a situation like this it was not the best thing. He sighed. He had already admitted that he didn't hate Kagome; the girl was too nice. She was too innocent to be there but she was. He didn't think she even knew what his brother wanted her for.
It was for the shikon, at least that was what he guessed she was for. He really couldn't think of any other reason for his brother to take a girl like her; unless he wanted to have a miko just to have one.
Bring Bring The shrill ring of the phone brought him out of his thoughts. He looked at his watch; 12:30 PM. He didn't need to be a physic to know it was Kikyo. She always called when he least wanted. And what better time to call then when he was thinking about someone else.
His muscles groaned as he shifted to get the phone. When Kikyo had hit him one time it had taken almost the whole day for him to heal, but that was years ago so he guessed he would be better by at least the afternoon.
He picked up the phone and answered with a gruff; "Hello?"
"Hey. Are you okay?" Kikyo's voice sounded anxious. He could hear a crowd of people as background noise. She was at the university probably running between classes.
"Yea I'm fine. Its not like I haven't ever been shot before." he sad tiredly. He really didn't feel like talking to anyone right now. He had to think about what to do.
"This is different it wasn't by me. She could have killed you Inuyasha." Her voice rising during the statement.
"But she didn't." he said shortly. He knew she wasn't being over-exaggerated but it still didn't stop making him feel like she was making a big deal out of it. He needed to keep her calm.
"But what about next time? She needs to be dealt with Inuyasha. Oooo. Can I deal with her?" she asked hopefully. Her voice turned from anxious to sounding very light. He could imagine the small smile on her face and the light in her brown eyes. He swore sometimes the girl was too happy about her powers and ability.
"Kikyo she's no trouble. She doesn't know how to use her powers. I don't want you to do anything until we are sure about her abilities. Just because she shot me doesn't mean anything." He growled. The tension was rising in him. He didn't like anyone pressing him to do anything about any situation.
"Do you think Sesshoumaru will just let her be? I bet he's already doing something about it. Training her." She said thoughtfully. Inuyasha knew she was right; it was never like his brother to just sit on something so powerful. The clicking of the lock on his front door drew his attention. Miroku walked in and only nodded to him as he went for the kitchen.
"Hey listen. Miroku is here. I'll talk to you later." He broke in hurriedly. She was in between classes anyway and had no reason to talk to him extendedly. "Just go to class and we'll talk later." He glanced at Miroku as he started puttering around the kitchen.
"Okay fine but I'm coming over tonight." He would have said something to stop her but she had already hung up the phone, basically putting her plan in cement. He just sighed and hung up the phone while trying to sit-up without showing his discomfort; he decided to only raise his head above the back of the couch just enough to see Miroku.
"You didn't scare Kagome completely did you?" he asked his friend.
His friend gave him an innocent expression and said just as harmlessly; "Inuyasha you would think that you would have more faith in my loyalty to my Sango. Really after so long of being together -"
Inuyasha rolled his eyes. "Okay I get it Miroku. You always say that." He said with a huff and flopped back down.
He stared at the ceiling as he felt the miniscule muscles in his ears twitch ever once in a while to the small sounds Miroku made in the kitchen. "You know" Miroku suddenly said from his position, "that Kagome is real nice."
"I guess…" he didn't really want to agree with his friend for the fact he was afraid of what it might lead to. Miroku was silent but Inuyasha could hear his footsteps as he came towards the couch.
His friend sat down on the same chair Kagome had earlier occupied and asked bluntly; "How do you know her?"
"Can't I know someone that you don't know?" Inuyasha asked slightly annoyed. He didn't want to tell Miroku what was going on just yet, because whatever Miroku knew Sango knew and if Sango knew then Ayame knew and that would just lead to Kouga.
Miroku shrugged; "Sure but you don't know schoolgirls. I do but you don't. Now tell me, who is she?" he asked again.
"No one. Just some girl I met."
"Where?"
"At a store."
"What store?"
"At the fucking market. Why the hell are you interrogating me?" Inuyasha said his voice lifting to a yell.
Instead of answering Miroku asked; "So you like her?" there was a hint of a smile on his lips.
Inuyasha grumbled, remembering how much Miroku loved to embarrass him; "No. I'm not like you or Kouga I don't chase everything that can walk."
"I was just asking Inuyasha. I mean you wanted to left alone with her, what was I supposed to think?" he asked innocently.
The hanyou's body may have hurt but his hand was strong enough to be lifted so he could flip off his perverted friend Miroku. "Nothing happened Miroku. I have Kikyo." He turned his attention back to the TV as he heard Miroku chuckle and get up from his seat.
Kagome's scent was all but gone and in its place Miroku's. Not that he had a problem with Miroku's scent; he had decided though he enjoyed Kagome's more.
A concern suddenly popped into Inuyasha's head. Scents. He had forgotten about his scent; he hadn't told Kagome to change her clothes or take a shower or anything before she left. But then it wasn't like I was right by her; maybe there wasn't a lot left on her.
"Did you tell her to take a shower or anything? Change her clothing or something?" Inuyasha questioned. He couldn't believe he had forgotten about the damn scents, but then again he didn't really have to deal with that part; there was always someone else there to make sure.
"No. Why would I?" Miroku asked confused.
Inuyasha inwardly groaned and hoped he wouldn't have to deal with the consequences later.
***
Kagome Higurashi was in algebra class.
Although she had been lucky enough to miss P.E. and biology, she had been unlucky enough not to miss algebra. She was happy that she didn't have that much homework to catch up on but unhappy that she had to do homework in the first place.
She was now sitting at her desk in the middle of the room staring blankly at a bad exam grade; C. The red markings creating their own little pattern across her paper that was already filled with thick black, ugly numbers and letters. Letters. Who ever thought about putting letters in math problems?
She had had the test last week; she knew she had done badly but it was hard to study when she belonged to a major gang. Sesshoumaru or Hojo or someone was almost always telling her to do something; wither it be training or scouting or some other menial job.
Studying had stopped being a priority. Why study? It wasn't like she was ever going to use algebra. And if she ever did do math the calculator was a very useful tool.
The teacher was talking in front of the class creating art out of drawing a jumble of letters and numbers. She wasn't paying attention; she couldn't she was too busy trying not to think about Inuyasha.
She never thought she would get the nerve to go see him. But she had and now she was permanently stuck on one moment that had occurred.
He said I was pretty.
The thought made Kagome smile. It kept swirling and replaying in her head continuously; making her smile bigger and her heart slightly flutter. She would never admit it out loud where people could hear but Kagome had to admit she liked the fact that he thought she was pretty.
And that you like him too?
I wouldn't go that far…
You know you do.
I do not like him. He's just cute…really…fine.
The small talk with herself only caused her mind to slip from the moment he said she was pretty to thinking about Inuyasha's certain qualities. His hair, his eyes, his lips, his face, his voice. Kagome didn't know if it was a good or bad thing that she couldn't really go past that. She sighed; yep it's good. No point in thinking about what you can't have.
She had no idea when this liking factor came into play. It's not like I've spent so much time with him. She could count the times she had been in close proximity to him on one hand. And it wasn't like he was the nicest person to her.
Yes he saved her life but for his gun. Sure he hadn't hurt her even though she had shot him with a bunch of burning energy. But that could have been because he didn't want me shooting him again. Maybe she was having some odd psychological complex; falling for the enemy or the hero.
She really didn't know which to call him.
Maybe I started liking him somewhere between him pulling his gun on me and him saving my life. Or maybe after I shot him.
Those two thoughts made her see the dysfunction of their `relationship'. Kagome also didn't know if it was a good or bad thing that she wanted a relationship with a person in such a destructive business.
Destructive. That was a good word for the hanyou. How else describe a person who did crimes for a living?
But then again destructive was a good word for her too. How else describe a person who willingly joins an organization that has no positive outcome?
Two destructions don't make a right. Eekk! Why am I even thinking like this? This doesn't matter. We won't be together. I don't want him like that. He doesn't want me like that.
Kagome decided to change her mind to a more pleasing thought pattern. Inuyasha's eyes.
His eyes are great. Human or hanyou, doesn't matter. She remembered the shade of his golden eyes from this morning.
Hmmm. I wonder what else I could call them. To Kagome gold did no justice to explain the mesmerizing hue.
Saffron, amber, copper, caramel, honey.
Honey. That's a good one. Honey.
Honey…
Kagome smiled and sighed contentedly.
"Higurashi, what's the answer?" Mr. Ando asked breaking through her thoughts. The teacher was standing not in front of her but a few desks from her. She realized the whole class was staring at her and her look of bewilderment.
Kagome raised her head quickly to attention and stared at the problem on the board in amazement. So many numbers… She had no idea where to even start with a glance to the teacher she knew he knew that she wasn't paying attention. With a small sigh she stood and bowed before the teacher.
"Gomen ne Ando-sensei. I do not know the answer." She blushed and could hear tiny giggles in the classroom.
The dark haired teacher made a slight frown; "Kagome you seem so happy to be here I would have thought you knew the answer."
With a smirk the slightly chubby teacher said amusingly; "Of course you wouldn't Kagome. Like I said 10 minutes ago this type of problem has no answer. Please pay attention." He turned back to the blackboard and started erasing the trick problem.
Kagome sat down slightly more embarrassed. That is so unfair. She didn't get how teachers could be that mean to purposefully embarrass their students. She knew she should have been listening but that didn't mean he had to use a trick question to prove his point. She glanced at the ticking clock. Algebra was the last class of the day and only 10 more minutes of torture were left.
And although the trick her teacher pulled on her should have taught her to listen, Kagome decided she didn't want to. And instead moved her thought not to Inuyasha but to more `safe' subjects.
The car ride with Miroku had been almost fun if he wasn't so fixated on her school uniform. I should never see him in it. He was nice and funny if a person could ignore the underlining innuendoes.
What are you doing after school?
Oh I have studying and stuff to do.
Are you sure? We could always get to know each other better.
You know you would be pretty nice if you weren't so perverted. Your head probably wouldn't hurt so much either.
My head doesn't hurt
--BOP-
OW! Kagome I'm driving.
She couldn't believe that someone so…open could be friends with Inuyasha. They were so different; him and Miroku. Already Miroku had made her laugh way more then Inuyasha even though she had spent more time with him. Not because Inuyasha wasn't funny; at least she thought he was funny, every time they had met he had been less then carefree. Something serious was always going on.
BRING BRING The ringing of the school bell broke through her thoughts. Over the noisy flurry to gather books and papers, the teacher yelled out the next assignment. Or course Kagome didn't hear it she was too surprised at seeing Yura at the door waiting for her.
"What are you doing here?" she asked the short girl as soon as she was out of the room. They were walking towards her locker. Kagome was politely squeezing through people and waiting for a path while Yura was making her own; not exactly pushing people out the way but she wasn't waiting to squeeze through and instead made people back up.
"Hojo couldn't come. Sesshoumaru called another meeting about last night. Seems we got a lot of information because of you." Yura called out over the crowded hall; which was hard for the fact that the girl was smaller then most of the people.
The finally made it to Kagome's locker. As she opened her locker and gathered her stuff for later she shook her head at Yura; "No I didn't do that much. Just wore some smutty clothes." That's what she said but she couldn't shake the feeling of being a little bit proud. It wasn't the easiest thing in the world to do. I really hurt Inuyasha. She shut her locker started walking out the school towards the parking lot with Yura following.
--You don't know how strong you can be. I'm stronger then most humans in human form.-
Inuyasha's words came back to Kagome. It scared her to think that maybe she was that strong. She had the power to damage someone greatly. In one sense it was almost empowering; to be able to protect herself. But in another light it was a burden for the fact that she had this type of responsibility.
Yura and Kagome didn't speak much on the way to the hideout because they had nothing to say to one another. It wasn't like they were really friends and they couldn't talk about Demon stuff because Kagome didn't know that much.
That bothered Kagome; the fact that she didn't know what was going on part of the time. Sure Sesshoumaru had been more then forthcoming with information after discovering her power but he still didn't say everything. Like who the jewel belongs to. Although Kagome had almost no information and was not on the inside, she did know for a fact that the jewel was not Sesshoumaru's. It couldn't be, it was too…pure for someone like him.
The silence was getting to her and it didn't seem like Yura would be speaking anytime soon, so Kagome asked the only thing on her mind; "So how exactly will I be trained?" she asked quickly. She had been wondering about this for the fact that she couldn't ever use her powers unless she was feeling something.
She looked over to Yura when she didn't answer immediately. The girl looked like she was thinking. She opened her mouth like she was going to speak but closed it again, a small look of confusion coming upon her features. She opened her mouth again and said haltingly; "I don't know. I'm not a miko."
She has a point there but I still want an answer. "Well do you know who's teaching me?" she asked as they pulled into the abandoned warehouse parking lot. It was still difficult for Kagome to realize that a whole system of rooms and halls were situated under, or within the place.
Yura answered as they got out of the car. "Her name is Kobayashi Tsubaki. She is highly respected for her ability. She is supposed to be very talented; she trained Kikyo." Yura said this very nonchalantly, but Kagome's heart skipped a beat.
"H-how interesting." Was all Kagome could stutter.
