The Beginning
Kagome looked up into the sky as she and Yura waited for Hojo to appear. It was a mix of black and blue that contrasted sharply with the pearly stars that punched thru the clouds floating by. It was nearly 1 AM and they were cold; it was the middle of February. The sun was up that day and had kept them warm, but with the disappearance of the heat the wind chilled them to the bone.
They weren't supposed to be there and they knew that. Actually, Kagome wasn't supposed to be there and she knew that. She wasn't seen as the girl who would wait in an alley in the middle of the night. The girl who waited to be a part of something that was seen, by society, as a doomed future.
She had stopped waiting for something better. Wanting had become her pastime. Wanting a place to belong was the only reason she was with Yura that night. Normally, Kagome would be at home sleeping in her bed peacefully. But another fight had erupted in her house between her `father' and her mother, and instead of staying home and listening to the pummeling by her father, she left. At 17, she had finally realized that she had a choice. To stay and listen to the tears being shed by mother and yelling by her father, or leave and find a place that better suited her outlook and life. That's how she ended up here.
Yura wasn't that good of a friend. The black haired girl was really an acquaintance. Kagome didn't have any real girlfriends, just acquaintances. No friends had made life less than bearable. She had wasted her time studying and hoping for something better in life. But that was gone, now that her father had said he lost his job. Scholarships were out of the question; she wasn't that smart.
She was waiting with Yura for Hojo, a member of The Demons. They were a local gang that ran this sector of the neighborhood. Kagome had seen them around; stealing, causing trouble for owners and so on. She had always watched them with her own sick fascination. They were so different from the other local gang, The Wolves. Well actually not completely different, it was just they had a different aura and stance than the other group.
"When is he getting here?" Kagome chattered. She didn't have on a sweater and her jacket was not helping her with the cold.
"Don't worry he'll be here soon enough." Yura said as she lighted a cigarette. Yura offered her one but Kagome refused. She had always found something slightly unattractive about people who smoked. The smell always became permanently attached to the smoker, willing its way into their system till it took over.
After another 10 minutes of waiting, Kagome started wondering if maybe she should just leave. The cold would make her sick the next day and she was getting tired of Yura just standing there smoking her brains out. The girl was leaning against a wall, the building belonged to old lady Keade, a nice lady who owned the ice cream shop and used to give Kagome free ice cream sodas before she grew up and too old for free stuff.
Kagome was brought out of her thoughts of her childhood by the footsteps of Hojo coming down the alley. Kagome had known Hojo forever, they went to the same school; if Hojo ever went to school. He was really nice to her when they were growing up and he still was. She really had no idea how he got involved with The Demons. By the way Yura spoke of him, Kagome guessed that he wasn't a vital part of their operations. He was more of a lackey really, following orders like pickups and drop-offs.
The only lighting the alley was the tall lamppost, which cast an eerie light on Hojo as he walked up. More of his face was shadowed then should have really been with a light on right above. He didn't look happy though seeing her waiting with Yura.
"What are you doing here?" he asked. He gave a glance to Yura before turning back to Kagome.
All she could do was shrug, "I wanna be there." Meeting The Demons had become a little goal of hers for a while.
He shook his head, "You can't. It's not right for you to be there." He turned from her as if what he said was final. He started walking away with Yura behind him out of the alley. Kagome walked up to him and stood in his way to stop him.
"Come on take me." He walked around her and Kagome just followed. "You won't have to worry about me, I can handle myself."
"Kagome, you don't belong there." He staring straight ahead as Yura followed sucking her cigarette silently.
"Oh and like you do." She smiled as he looked at her. They were passing the church that was 3 blocks down form Keade's. Kagome had wondered to herself where they were going but she thought to ask questions later. Her main mission right now would be to actually be able to go.
All 3 knew that Hojo didn't belong out on the streets. But being in a gang had helped him grow and toughen up. He really didn't want Kagome to go because 1. She didn't belong there and 2. He didn't know what everyone would say if he brought someone, who wasn't his girlfriend, from the outside in. He had never done that before and didn't if he had that type of power within the group. He was a lackey and he, Yura, and Kagome knew that.
He was quiet for a while just walking closer to the Demons spot. Yura though interrupted before he could speak, "Oh my god. Hojo just let her come. She'll keep harping on you till she can."
Kagome smiled at the girl gratefully. Even though they weren't going out, Yura had a lot a power concerning Hojo. She had joined after Hojo, saying to be his girlfriend. She was, until she had broken it off. She had seen that he wasn't anything important and she didn't need him anymore. Kagome had guessed that Hojo still liked Yura, only the feelings weren't returned.
Hojo relented when he heard Yura's words. "Fine but you don't speak and forget everything after the meeting."
Kagome nodded happily and fell in line with the duo. It was still cold and the moon lighted the journey to where god knew where. They passed a church; it was 3 blocks down from Keade's shop. Another block and around the corner landed the trio at the front of a supposedly abandon warehouse. Looking at the dilapidated building brought a frown to Kagome's face.
*Did they really have meetings here?*
Broken windows and rust ran over all the front of the building. They entered and the inside looked just as deserted. By the back of the building was a wall of brick. Hojo knocked on the wall and section was opened by a very mean looking girl, an expression on her face stating that she could kick you ass and enjoy immensely. She greeted Yura and Hojo with a smile but barely acknowledged Kagome. Which was fine with her. She was being silent, just as Hojo had told her to. Besides it looked like that girl would be very willing to kick Kagome's ass regardless of the fact that she had come with Yura and Hojo.
They had entered hallway it was dim and musty. The four of them walked along to another door at the end of the hallway. When the door was opened Hojo, Kagome could already see the luxury the Demons liked to live with. It was very evident with the plush carpeting, the paintings on the walls and so on. It was like stepping into a new world. A very rich world, filled with everything any person would want. Kagome stepped up beside Yura.
"What's with all the eloquence? And what about that invisible door shit?" she asked the small girl.
Yura just shook her head and smiled, "What did you expect us to have everything out and up for the taking just by anyone? This is the safest thing that Sesshoumaru could think of to hide everything. The door has this spell on it that makes it invisible, we have to just memorize where it is and it will always open for us."
The expression on Kagome spoke of her inability to believe it.
"Yea I know it is hard to grasp. I still don't really have it. But it does keep us safe."
"Where would Sesshoumaru get a spell like that?"
Yura shrugged, "Don't ask me. He's hundreds of years old, so I don't find it hard to believe that he could have found someone to make a spell."
"Really he is?" Kagome asked forgetting completely about her early questions.
Yura nodded, "Yea but he doesn't look it, he looks 27."
The two girls were whispering between themselves when they made another turn and came to a door that had its own wall. The mean girl opened the door and stepped inside followed Yura, but Hojo stopped and turned to Kagome.
"Remember Kagome, no speaking." She only nodded and followed him in.
