To Heal a Broken Heart

Chapter 1 - Homecoming

Kagome had lived next door to the Taisho family since she was just three years old. Over the years both Taisho brothers had become her friends. Though she didn’t move in the same circles as them, they had always been friendly. They weren’t stuck up like most of the rich families in the area. They had always treated her and her family very well. After Jii-chan had got sick, Taisho-sama had given mama a job as his housekeeper so she could stay close to home. He had even allowed her little brother Souta and her to roam free on their lands. They had been nothing but kindness to her and her family, but that hadn’t stopped it from hurting. In fact, if anything it had made it worse. The pitying looks she caught from Izayoi-sama and Taisho-sama had been almost too much to bear. But the cold indifference of Sesshoumaru had been the most hurtful thing. Finally she couldn’t stand it anymore, so she left. Travelling all around the world on a shoestring budget, sending mama a postcard or a letter whenever she could.

The world was a wonderful place filled with interesting people, but there was no feeling like coming home. I was coming home for the first time in over two years. It had been had staying away but it would have been harder to stay. After everything that had happened between her and Inuyasha, it would have been torture to stay. Maybe she was just a coward. She sighed and looked out the window of the aeroplane.

‘I’m home.’

The man in the seat beside her looked at her curiously, she just smiled and shook her head. The man had made overtures and made no attempt to hide his attraction to her. He was nice enough, but she wasn’t ready for a new relationship, she didn’t know if she’d ever be ready. She sighed again, this time inwardly.

Looking out the window again she unconsciously twisted her hair nervously. It was longer than it had been before, falling to her waist in shining raven tresses. Inuyasha had always said he liked her hair short, it was ironic that he had chosen someone with really long hair. Her mouth twisted into a rueful moue. Her bangs were still unruly though, that hadn’t changed at least.

The aeroplane had landed and the man in the seat next to her gave Kagome his number. She smiled politely but she knew she wouldn’t call him. It was just hard to reject someone like that, especially for one who had been rejected so much. The man left in a hurry, he only had hand luggage he had said. For a moment, Kagome envied him. She knew all the fuss she would have to go through to get her bags. She sighed, again and smiled grimly.

‘I guess I should be used to it by now.’

She stood up and straightened her sadly wrinkled clothes. She thought she probably looked awful but at least she wouldn’t see anyone she knew here. The last thing she wanted was to give a bad impression after all her time away.

It took an hour for her bag to come around the conveyor belt and by that time she was feeling a little frazzled and anxious to get back to her apartment. She had bought it as soon as she had left school at eighteen. Somehow, home didn’t seem so great with her cousin still living there. Most of her savings had gone into buying and fixing the place up.

Lugging her bags through the terminal, she got to the entrance and started looking for a taxi cab. It didn’t look good, it was getting late and there wasn’t one around. She bit her lip in frustration, she was really not in the mood for this after a twelve hour flight. A familiar voice spoke up behind her. She froze, knowing exactly who it was.

“Kagome. You are home I see.”

She plastered on a bright smile and turned to face him.

“Sesshoumaru. I see your powers of observation are as sharp as ever.”

He arched a brow at her and looked out at the almost empty parking lot.
“How do you plan on getting home?”

“Worried, Sesshy? Don’t be, I’ll fine my own way. I don’t need your help.”

“I did not offer it.”

She glared at him and spun away. The effect was only spoiled by having to rescue her bags from falling over. She looked back at him and glared again, daring him to say something. He merely looked at her with what she swore was a glint of amusement in his eyes.

“Hmph.” She turned away again and walked to the pay phone to ring up a taxi. The places she called were not willing to send one so late. The airport was quite far out of town. She groaned in frustration as the fifth place she called said the same thing as the others. She hung the phone back up in its cradle and stood there silently.

‘Should I call Mama?’

She dismissed the idea, she didn’t want to worry her. That left her with only one choice. Slowly walking back to him with an unhappy expression she mumbled something quickly. He just raised his brow at her again. She knew he was just tormenting her. She glared again and said through gritted teeth.

“Can you please give me a ride into town?”

He looked at her for a long moment and walked off without a word. Kagome’s heart fell and she wondered what she was going to do now. But he stopped and looked back at her. Taking this as a signal to follow, she rushed after him to his car.

He put her two bags in the trunk and opened the passenger door for her. She mumbled her thanks when he slid in next to her and started up his jeep.

“ I heard you got married to Kagura.”

She was surprised that she had said that. It hadn’t been what she had intended to say at all but now that it was out there was no way to take it back. His grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly and he tensed a little. When he didn’t say anything she spoke up in a rather bitchy tone.

“I’m surprised she let you out on your own. She was always glued to your side.”

Kagome had been upset when she had heard that he had gotten married. He hadn’t even said anything to her even though they had been the best of friends for the longest time.

“Actually, I’m surprised you married her at all. She was always really easy where you were concerned-”

Sesshoumaru cut her off and said in a matter-of-fact tone.

“Kagura is dead.”

Nothing he could have said could have made Kagome feel worse. Why had she said all that anyway? It wasn’t like her to be so…mean. Even if Kagura had always been nasty to her and even though she had said some awful things that last week, she hadn’t deserved to die so young.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said all those things.”

Suddenly a thought occurred to her and she turned to face Sesshoumaru.

“What happened to her sister? Is Rin ok?”

He glanced over at her with his uninterested expression as if to gauge her sincerity. She looked so genuinely worried that he felt as if all the time had not passed and the old Kagome was back. His old Kagome. He shook his head as if to disperse these thoughts and looked back at the road.

“Kagura and I adopted Rin. She lives with me now.”

Kagome was a little taken aback. Her mother had been a little unforthcoming with detail in her letters about the Taisho brothers but she hadn’t thought she would leave out something like this. She thought back to the few times she had seen Sesshoumaru and Rin together. Her had been so patient and gentle with her. He was probably a wonderful father. Unable to think of anything to say, she lapsed into contemplative silence.

Sesshoumaru glanced over at her a few times. Taking in the changes that had taken place over the past two years. Her hair was the most noticeable thing. It had barely reached her shoulders when she had left but it was so long now. That hadn’t stopped it from curling wildly though. She wasn’t any taller than she used to be but she was leaner. Where before she had been all curves she was now leaner. He was glowing too, her skin had picked up a healthy tan. All things considered she looked better than she ever had. The only thing that hadn’t changed was her eyes. Bottomless pools of blue you could drown yourself in if you stared to long.

The rest of the journey passed in silence. Kagome started when she heard Sesshoumaru speak.

“We’re here.”

She glanced at him and looked out the window. They were outside her apartment. She looked at him silently and got out of the car. He got out too and opened the trunk for her.

“Thanks for everything Sesshoumaru.”

She was stood on the sidewalk with her bags in hand, obviously dismissing him. He arched a brow at her but she her expression didn’t change and she didn’t move. He noticed the strain in her eyes and the slight droop of her shoulders.

‘She looks tired.’

He nodded curtly and got back in his car. He looked at her with a curious expression she couldn’t even begin to decipher in her state and drove off. She felt a loss when he left but pushed the feeling away. Sighing for the hundredth time that day she headed inside.

She had called Sango, her closest friend from school. She had left the keys for her apartment with her and she would be there now to let her in. Sango and Souta were the only one’s she had called to say she was coming home. Whether it was for good or not remained to be seen.

Sango buzzed her in and she wearily got into the elevator. She was eternally grateful that it was working. She didn’t even want to think of climbing five floors worth of steps with her two heavy bags. Sango was waiting for her in the hallway outside the lift and enveloped her in a warm hug the minute she saw her. Kagome laughed.

“Sango-chan, its good to see you too but if you don’t let me out of the lift soon its going to move on.”

Sango laughed and grinned at Kagome. Grabbing the bigger bag in one hand and Kagome’s hand in the other she dragged them both out of the lift just before it closed.

“It is really good to see you again Kagome-chan.”

She pulled them through into the apartment and deposited Kagome on the sofa. Kagome sank into it and closed her eyes. Sango went off to the kitchen and called out to Kagome.

“I’ll just make you some tea. I have to say Kagome-chan you look really good. The long hair really suits you.”

When she got no answer Sango poked her head through the doorway and smiled when she was Kagome fast asleep.

She shook Kagome awake and helped her to her bedroom. After tucking her in bed Sango left, leaving Kagome a note on the bedside with the keys beside it. After tucking her in bed Sango left, leaving Kagome a note on the bedside with the keys beside it
