Chapter 2 - Who Comforts Whom?
Sesshomaru awoke from his light haze to the sound of Rin squirming in her sleep, she was having another nightmare.
Curious
The Demon Lord watched her body react to its stimulus for a moment, a few times, her eyes even flashing open, though she still slept. Then suddenly, she bolted awake! Sesshomaru could hear the strong pounding of her heart, and the shallowness of her breaths. She looked up towards him slowly, her face drenched in sweat…
“I had the dream again.” She softly cried.
Recently, Rin had been plagued with the memory of the day her parents died, taken from her in a raid by human bandits upon her childhood village. She was reminded of the event when the last village they had approached for her supplies had been desiccated prior to their arrival.
Sesshomaru glanced quickly at Jaken, who hadn’t been disturbed by the ruckus. He was now fairly convinced that the imp could completely shut down all outer senses while he slept.
Quietly, he spoke… “Rin….come here.” As he outstretched his arm, inviting the maiden to climb onto his lap. Why do I comfort her? He asked himself. Why is her wellbeing my concern?
Maybe it was the fact that she was human, and therefore, posed him no threat. The lord trusted no one, but yet knew that this human girl could not hurt him, even if she tried, but yet at the same time he also knew, that she never would. She was a fragile and happy creature, who always followed him without question, and of her own free will. He’d always made it known to her that she could remain in any of the villages they’d passed, if she ever chose to leave their travels. Now he wondered what it would be like, if she ever did decide to leave him.
As Rin fell back asleep in Sesshomaru’s embrace, he found he did not object, but rather, gods forbid, he was actually beginning to understand his father’s reasoning. Humans required someone to care for them, someone to protect them. As much as he always denied it to himself, and even to others, it was true in fact, that he did protect Rin. Whenever she was in danger, saving her instantly became top priority.
Rin slept comfortably until morning, Sesshomaru never having again drifted off himself, but rather staying awake, and watching over her all night. In a weird way, knowing that somebody cared for him, showing no fear like the wretched sniveling Jaken, was a pleasing sensation. Lord Sesshomaru needed no one! Yet, to know that someone was there, should that ever change, made him feel…..relaxed. For the first time in the demon’s long life, he smiled the slightest smile, that wasn’t due to a sinister thought during a battle.
Before the morning sky lost all trace of orange, the girl awoke, and gazed up at the man who’d held her all night. His pair of golden orbs shimmering like two rising suns, he watched as she yawned the tired out of her own eyes. She didn’t want to get up, his fluff was so comfortable! A passing thought of how she’d longed for him to hold her like this made a quick rush of color hit her cheeks, she hadn’t slept against his body but once or twice, and only when she was still a small child.
Though he’d noticed her blush, he made no mention of it, simply stating “You should eat now.” While wondering to himself Why did she blush just then? What was she thinking about?
Rin got herself up and headed towards the stream to catch a fish. It was around now that Jaken finally stirred, and smirked to himself at how quickly the human had grown, and how, in only a short while, her body would fade, and her life would be gone from this earth. After all, 80 years is a short while, for demons. Caught up in a daydream about the day he’d finally be freed from watching over that inferior human, his thoughts were interrupted by an abrupt command of “Stay here” from a passing Sesshomaru.
“Yes M’Lord!” He squeaked agreeably, while wondering Hmph, what’s gotten into him lately?
Sesshomaru quietly followed the path Rin had taken down to the nearby stream, and coming across it, made no noise as he observed the maiden attempt to catch her breakfast. The water was cold; goose bumps were visible on her arms as her clothing became more and more soaked with every passing splash. But, she appeared to be having fun! Yes, a smile was brightly placed upon her lips for all the world to see, and her giggles could even be heard by Jaken, who grumpily attempted to ignore the sound. Though she was no longer the small child Tenseiga had impelled Sesshomaru to save those many years ago, she was still pure and innocent.
Bending down far to reach an approaching fish, Rin’s right breast suddenly fell out of her top. This startled our Demon Lord more than it did the girl, after all, she wasn’t aware she was being observed, and left herself in place until after her chore of grabbing that passing fish was complete. Sesshomaru tried to avert his eyes, but he found his gaze would not relinquish. His Rin was definitely all grown up. Hmm, his Rin? Where did that thought come from?
After Rin successfully retrieved her breakfast, she fixed her garment and headed happily back towards the campsite. Sesshomaru could not have returned before her without making his presence known, so he remained in his hiding place for the moment.
“Master Jaken!” Rin bounced happily. “I’ve brought us a fish, only one, but it’s large enough to share.”
“I suppose you expect me to prepare it for you?” He complained. “You humans and your weak stomachs, always requiring your food to be cooked!”
“Oh could you Master Jaken? Thanks!” Sarcasm dripping from her lips. “While you cook the fish I think I’ll bathe in the stream. No peeking!” She winked at the small demon, knowing how her politeness just egged him on further.
“Bah, insolent human!” He spat in retaliation. “Why would I want to observe a creature such as yourself? I have much better things to do!” How do I always get myself into these situations, now I’m her cook!
Though it hadn’t come up in conversation, Rin had in fact noticed that Lord Sesshomaru was nowhere in site of their camp. She nevertheless did need to bathe, so she again left Jaken and Ah-Uhn at the camp, quietly wondering to herself where Sesshomaru had gone.
