Chapter 4 - A Day to Think

Upon realizing she had a peeping tom, Rin attempted to regain her composure, not knowing who it was, she quickly sat down into the stream so that she was only visible from the neck up.

“Who’s……who’s there?” She demanded, trying not to sound too shaky. “That better not be you Jaken!

Sesshomaru decided to make his appearance, his secrecy having already been blown.

“Sess…I mean, LORD Sesshomaru….” Rin stuttered nervously, face as red as ever, “Wha…how long….um…hello.”

Sesshomaru was as flustered on the inside though he refused to show it, responding with a simple “Hello.”

“Um, I’m just about finished with my bath, I’ll be back at the camp in just a minute.” Rin said, trying to pretend nothing awkward had just occurred. But unfortunately, Sesshomaru, for once, was not about to let a subject be unspoken.

“Is it true?” He asked, face as emotionless as ever.

“Is what true?” Rin asked in response, genuinely confused at the moment.

“Do you love this Sesshomaru?” She heard him ask.

His question made Rin’s heart skip a beat, though she’d obviously realized he had observed her, she didn’t realize that she’d said that out loud, but she had, and he’d heard it, with those demon ears of his.

You cannot lie to Lord Sesshomaru…

“Forgive me Lord Sesshomaru.” She mumbled quietly, lowering her gaze in shame. “I wasn’t aware you had heard me.”

“Answer the question.” He said calmly, not so much a harsh demand.

“Uh, yes, yes it is true.” Her response was muffled, but he still heard her clearly.

“So you love me...” He stated stoically. “Why?”

“I don’t know.” Rin mumbled, then daring to look up again and meet his gaze, she whispered “I just do.”

Though it wasn’t an answer he’d hoped for, it was an answer he understood, because in truth, he was experiencing many emotions himself for which he did not know the reason.

Rin was hoping he was about to let the subject drop, but no such luck. She felt the heat return to her face when she heard his next question.

“Rin, were you imagining it was I who was pleasing you?”

Rin blushed, and Sesshomaru could hear her heart rate increase again, she was embarrassed, which meant that his assumption was correct.

Sesshomaru continued without waiting for a response. “Rin, do you realize what it would entail to be my mate? You would not be free to go as you are now. If we mated, you would be mine, for the rest of your life. Are you truly prepared to live out your days among demons, raising half-breed children?”

Rin felt as if Sesshomaru were trying to put her down easy, explaining away why a child’s crush was illogical. But she knew it was more than just a foolish crush. She hadn’t just met him yesterday, he’d raised her, he’d brought her back to life and raised her, saving her whenever danger befell upon her. She knew the Lord better than anyone else, including Jaken. She could see the emotions he hid so well from others.

After appearing to have allowed enough time for contemplation, she looked up, determination shining in her eyes. “Yes.”

Sesshomaru’s eyes narrowed at the girl, he was not angry, but confused. Staring at her like a puzzle he could not figure out. Finally he turned to walk away, speaking as he left.

“Rin, get dressed and return to camp. Your fish is prepared and waiting.” Taking a breath, he paused until he heard her climb out of the water, and wrap her garment around herself. Turning around to face her now, he spoke softer, “Remain in that spot with Jaken until I return.”

Rin, feeling a little sorry for herself, convinced that things would never be the same now, slowly muttered. “Yes Lord Sesshomaru.”

After several hours of travel through the woods Sesshomaru reached a clearing, he was approaching the village where his half-breed brother and his wench lived. Why had he come here? Originally, he was merely walking to ponder the thoughts in his mind, but this is where his feet brought him.

He got himself close enough to observe the villagers, without making his presence known. Suddenly, a small girl, reminding him very much of the Rin he once knew, came bounding out of the nearest dwelling. She was young, dressed fairly well, but barefoot, with long black hair and….and dog ears? Yes, this child had dog ears on the top of her head, she must be the offspring of that retched Inuyasha. An untimely change of wind made his presence known to the youth, and she playfully trotted over in his direction.

“Hi.” She said happily.

“Hello.”

“My name is Kyame.” The young girl said. “What’s yours?”

“Sesshomaru.”

Kyame’s eyes sprang wide with recognition, and with a gasp of joyful surprise, she lunged forward to embrace him, screaming “Uncle Sesshomaru!”

Hmm, so the child knows who I am, interesting.

“Kyame, Kyame where are you?” A voice suddenly called from within the village.

“Over here mother!” The girl called in response.

So, it is her he mated with, the same human wench from all those years before.

“Sesshomaru!” Kagome bellowed in surprise upon seeing the Demon Lord on the outskirts of their village. “What are you doing…I mean, uh, Hi there, been a long time…”

“Yes, it has.”

“Uh, look, I don’t mean to be rude, but what’s your business here?”

Sesshomaru ignored the question, posing her with one of his own.

“This child, she is the child of you and Inuyasha?” Of course he already knew she was, but he wanted the confirmation nonetheless.

“What of it?” Kagome snapped, sounding a little more like Inuyasha over the years.

“Why did you bare his child?” Sesshomaru asked, no hint of disgust in his voice, which Kagome noticed, and thought was odd. Deciding to answer him, she replied, still Inuyasha-like….

“Not that it’s any of your business, but we love each other.”

“Why do you love a demon?” He asked next, genuine curiosity apparent in his voice.

Kagome a little taken back by Sesshomaru’s strange questions, decided she hadn’t been in contact with him for nearly 10 years, and maybe he wasn’t the same cruel monster he used to be, so she sat down a safe distance away, and, comfortably holding her daughter, continued on with the conversation, starting to sound more and more like her old self as she did so.

“Honestly, I don’t know.” She began. “I don’t think anybody knows why they love the person they love. But as far as him being a half-demon, that had nothing to do with it. I love him for who he is, and he just happens to be a half-demon.”

“And during his time of weakness?” Sesshomaru questioned. When he’s fully human, do you love him more, or less?”

“I love him the same. He’s still Inuyasha, still my husband and the father of our daughter.”

“The child knows who I am, why did you tell her of me?”

“Oh, well, Kyame was asking about her family, and we wanted her to know where she came from, and that included Inuyasha’s father, and you. She is after all, one-quarter demon.”

Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow. “Indeed, and being human, it doesn’t trouble you baring demonic children?”

“Sesshomaru, where are these questions coming from?” Kagome asked, getting a little frustrated. “Of course it doesn’t bother me. I married your brother, knowing full well what he is, and what our children will be. Our children will be, our children.

“I see.”

“Hey!” It was Kagome’s turn now. “You still haven’t answered me. What’s with the barrage of questions?”

“I required input.”

“For….?”

“Making a decision.”

“About….?”

Sesshomaru glared at the questioning human, a look of disgust beginning to appear on his face.

“Ah-ah-ah…” Kagome teased, shaking her finger playfully. “My turn, a decision about what?”

Out of the mouth of babes, Kyame suddenly spoke up. “Isn’t it obvious mother? About love!”

Kagome, realizing her daughter hit it dead on, looked up at Sesshomaru with a puzzled and pleased look on her face. So, the Great Dog Demon of the Western Lands was in love?

“Is it Rin?” She asked next.

“That’s not your concern.” Sesshomaru spat in response, cursing the insolate child for her intuition.

“Aw, so it is Rin.” Kagome concluded, claping her hands together. Sesshomaru flashed her a death look, but she smiled and ignored it, continuing on. “Well, I can’t speak for her now, but if her devotion for you is still anything like what I saw when she was a child, then you’ve got nothing to worry about.”

Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow at the Miko, in both surprise for her reading him so quickly, and also, her willingness to continue this conversation.

Enter Inuyasha (who hasn’t aged a day)

“Daddy!” Kyame spat happily, scurrying herself out of her mother’s lap.

“Hey pup, what are you and mommy up to?” Then noticing his wife sitting besides and apparently conversing politely with his brother… “Sesshomaru? What are you doing here?”

Sesshomaru got up and began to leave, but turned and answered “She will explain it to you.” and he was gone. But before leaving completely, he got himself just out of site and turned to again observe the village from seclusion. He was just out of ear shot due to other, interfering noises, but he visually witnessed the child running playfully into the dwelling, and Inuyasha and his wife kissing briefly, before entering themselves.

Well, it was easier for Inuyasha, he was already a half-breed, having a human mother. Of course he’d find himself able to care for a human female. Then again, their father was the ruler of the western lands, an old, powerful demon, feared by all, and he’d fallen for a human. A human that did not fear him, despite the threat he could obviously pose, should he choose to. Curious.

It was getting late on into the evening, so the demon decided to return to the campsite, but his mind did not stop battling itself throughout the entire journey.
