To Perish Once More: Chapter Eleven: Prerogatives

"That is not the quick way to friendship!" She burst out.

The control she reigned over, due the gravity of the situation, suddenly snapped. The result of the chase drained their bodies' energies and yet she was compelled to warrant some sort of judgment.

I could leave well enough alone.

Regretfully, there was nothing `well' about the entire confrontation.

Her only female peer in the Feudal Era exerted her control not to mourn openly when the choice of life and death became Kagura's inheritance.

Intuitively, she knew the fluming fury of emotions trapped in the wind-user's soul. The grievances against her persona were countless, the hatred coursed deep, and the relief naught.

Still, she wondered.

When the shard was taken from the now-lifeless body of Sango's little brother, her thoughts turned homeward bound.

Souta…

Even when he acted the part `big brat', his life was not needless…in her eyes, anyway.

Mama had chosen both of their lives. Decidedly, she would try begging or servitude, if necessary, for the life of Kohaku. Bracing her self, she pointed to the subject of inquiry.

"What will you do now?"

Of course, she was aware of the predicament.

The boy had waged war for the ownership of his will. His soul was desperately desolate and altogether annihilated.

He sought refuge - in death.

So tragic…

The war for the life over his will died the instant the shard was removed.

She stepped around Kagura and squatted beside the lifeless prostate body.

There was no value - no victory - in collecting the jewel shard clutched near the she-demon's heart. There was no desire to increase Sango's sorrow.

It isn't fair!

What choice did he have?

The way she understood it, there weren't any when it came to him.

Her convictions waned.

What if he had chosen?

…At least, this time.

But.

What if…

An idea aspired.

What if he could start over?

Didn't Naraku steal the chance he had? Wouldn't Kohaku rather have died in his village or during his first combat experiences?

She had to consider all possibilities. There were so many.

Kagura declined to answer.

So be it.

She wouldn't resume her interrogation.

However…

It was her prerogative to ask the impossible.

Brave.

Incredibly foolish.

but brave…

His servant tumbled backward.

Rin silently begged.

The exterminator bowed, face downcast, on her knees.

Hmmph.

There were no other humans - or demons, for that matter - near the clearing. He could do it.

He would.

If only on the simple basis that he willed it. His reasons were not of great consequence.

His hand drew out the object of his obsessive scorn. It did not contain violent promise. Yet, he had killed with it.

And resurrected life.

His role was to vanquish what ever he willed. He willed the other world's creatures dead. That was his conquest.

Sheathing Tenseiga, after accomplishing this task, his intense study of the priestess startled her out of her momentarily awed stupor.

Powerful…

One day, he would discover the source of her internal fortitude and power.

He reminded him self of her abilities.

"Mi-milord?"

Rin remained silent. She toddled in front of him and knelt next to Kohaku's stirring body.

The obvious surprise of that vexing wind-woman radiated when the boy rolled to his side and stared at the overcast sky.
