I smell them.

He hadn't seen Kagome since nearly the beginning of the sweltering two months past. He missed her horribly. The strain of not catching her scent in the breeze stifled his concentration as rumors grew about the near completion of the Shikon Jewel.

If the gossip was even moderately true… Naraku would aim at his pack to bait him out of his shelter and to seek out the last shards thrust in his legs. He decided not to use the power of the jewel shards for well over the past month. His survival might depend on it.

He worried.

He needed a diversion.

Anything.

Like the scorched land, his thirst for Kagome's friendship was parched. His heart withered, inadvertently realizing her expected reaction to his personal touch.

I can't help it.

Silently, he fumed at his own idiocy.

Hells bells…what am I thinking?

He knew why he couldn't resist her.

Pretty. Loyal.

Strong. Feminine.

Does only right…

The list was unending. In his mind, she didn't have a mean bone in her body.

Not usually, anyway.

Courageous.

Yep.

She's all sugar and spice… his recipe for perfection.

Except for when she was pissed.

The gods forbid he was ever on the receiving end of her wrath. Her ire wasn't the kind of foe he wanted to witness first-hand. Damn, if he hadn't already seen the power of her submission command.

He shivered.

Damn.

He wished for a chance to hold her tightly.

Damn.

He almost wished he was born the half-breed. He clenched fists.

At least the half-mutt cares for her.

His encounter with Inuyasha at the Bone-Eater's well a couple months ago had been enlightening…to say the least. He suspected Kagome was from a different world, but never had he contemplated the vast distinction of his era and hers.

At first, when that dog-crap told him of her future origins, he didn't believe it, but when the truth of the matter was demonstrated… He couldn't describe it as anything less than awesome.

Still.

It's not fair that he gets this kind of convenience.

He slowed his run.

It's not fair that he's won her love.

His chest tightened. As often as the jealousy surfaced, he never was accustomed to it. Like always, the feeling was swallowed in his joy to see her again.

They were leaning against each other in an embrace.

He grimaced.

Dog-breath, you're one lucky bastard.

He would respect their privacy tonight.

Her heart would by no means develop into the supreme adoration that he lavished her with. He couldn't walk in Inuyasha's shadow. Never.

His love was lost to her. He didn't stand half a chance to be number one.

Tomorrow…

He would rouse early in the morning and shower her with his affections. His affections, though denied as her love, would not be refused as a friend - especially since he openly sacrificed his heart to her on a silver platter.

He would beat the living shit out of Dog-face if he was deprived an opportunity to earn her affections.

Attentions.

I can earn her attention.

Brief as it may be.
