She wondered how it was possible that out of all the mothers in the universe she was most probably the only one whose eldest child was chosen by Grandfather Time to traipse between both the present and past for a future that was uncertainly predictable.
If that, in fact, made any good sense to any one separate from the reason voiced in her own mind.
To the loon house I go…
Good thing she never mentioned her daughter's adventures to anyone outside Souta and her father. As it was, that only occurred after the shrine was closed from visiting hours and outsiders couldn't eavesdrop on some of the heart-to-heart conversations they occasionally shared in secret at meal times.
Otherwise some elder is bound to hear one of father's rants and end up comatose or have a heart attack - or end up with a displaced hip - or something else awful on the shrine steps.
She needed a constant in her life and when her children were first birthed into her world, she wanted to guarantee her love and devotion to them. Even more so, she was willing to sacrifice her every whim - which wasn't difficult for her - to watch them grow to become healthy, happy, and prosperous adults, no matter the circumstance that brought it about. They were her constant joy and fueled her stubborn belief and disciplined drive to work harder…
A belief, that when Kagome transported through the Bone-Eater's well the very first time, was redefined and reformed.
Score two for the nut house, zero for me…
Sometimes in moments of solitude - such as she currently experienced - she was dizzied trying to fathom the time continuum that centralized around her daughter's comings and goings and swallowed hard, forcing down her nausea as the very concept of time travel overwhelmed her.
Mathematics would have difficulty proofing itself against fate, she decided.
Speaking of fate…
She wouldn't call her self naïve, per se; after all, her own teachers taught history lessons concerning the violence and death in wars that soldiers, mercenaries, and common people all fought in so many centuries ago.
And that's just human records and documentation of things…
She hid her frown when Souta bounded down the stairwell to wish her a good-night.
A good mother wouldn't allow her children to face such dangers.
Sighing, she rubbed the cramp that formed on the back side of her neck - watching until he retired to his room - put away the last of the dinner dishes, then walked into the living area and slumped onto the sofa to ease away her physical discomfort.
Children should never have to know the evils of war even though tactics and strategy have changed.
The first time her daughter had come home telling her of experiences with primitive modern warfare, she worried… especially when she learned of Kagome's exposure to some sort of early nerve agent poisoning, she guessed.
Thank goodness there wasn't a lot of knowledge concerning those kinds of poisons back then…
Well, perhaps there was more than she cared to admit, but counting her blessings, she was appreciative, nevertheless, that resources and funding weren't quite as readily available to frequent such making of weapons and machines. Sophisticated designs of assault engaged against her daughter in combat scared the prospect of allowing her back into that era, should there be mass production of arms of such caliber.
Traveling with a fierce group of warriors who faced war daily and managed to survive, some how, eased her heart, knowing the child of both her body and soul was in better than capable hands. So she hadn't feared for her safety - not usually.
Of course, there is still school…
It was her long held belief that so long as school existed, that Kagome would be praying to make it back alive - at least from one examination until the next was due.
Relief when ever that hope was fulfilled as time passed and tests came and went - and then there were more tests; she couldn't be happier that the new faculty pushed and shoved academic excellence down the throats of their students, loading them up with an abundance of assignments, complete with almost the same amount of tests.
Inuyasha always brings her home…that's good - no, that's great.
It would serve as a tutorial to her daughter that there were no exemptions in life wherein responsibility was inherent in order to accomplish good deeds.
Once she almost argued with Inuyasha concerning Kagome's school. Eventually, she put her foot down and threatened to ban him from even looking at her ever again if he ever neglected her education. He had started to froth at the mouth with the announcement, she thought at the time, but her decision was firm.
To his credit, he backed down but not before muttering the fact that he would still fight and try to convince Kagome that his way was best.
She suppressed a laugh with the memory.
Kagome has always been special…
Almost always making the right decision, even while occasionally standing alone, it would amount to nothing to keep her daughter from carrying the legacy of protecting her world - even if it was several centuries in the past.
Her daughter was one of the best people she knew - brave and more courageous than most any modern person walking the streets of Tokyo - not to mention the whole of Japan. Of course, there was a sort of prideful motherly partiality to that thought - but still…
She smiled.
Making her way up to her bedroom after turning out the house lights she thought about her daughter's adventures - and some recollection of shrine tales told to her as a little girl.
Once, she remembered, she was told that one of family members from back in that era had been reincarnated for some strange twist of fate into the family lineage. She wondered at that. Maybe Kagome knew - more than likely, not, but the idea wasn't entirely unfeasible to imagine.
Nothing's impossible anymore…
And she wouldn't ask frivolous questions such as that which might worry her daughter whenever she was safe at home - like right now.
Rolling on her side, she closed her eyes, heart at rest to fall asleep.
Only to wake up a few hours later with her daughter screaming down the hallway.
Dear heavens…it's 2 o'clock in the morning…
Racing down the hallway, she turned the knob to the bedroom door and pushed her self inside long enough to see her daughter's companion frantic trying to snap her out of whatever nightmare surfaced in her dreams.
“Inuyasha, what happened?”
“I don't know… she's been tossing in her sleep like this the last half hour or so.”
Feeling her forehead, she noticed the fever breaking across her skin.
“I'll get a cool cloth. See if you can shake her out of this.”
“Yes ma'am.”
She hurried to the kitchen to pack some ice in a zip-lock bag and covered it with a towel. Even though she felt concern, she was glad to be useful to her eldest child when she needed help right now. She could stay awake for this.
And I swear I will.
