*Chapter Twelve: Happy Birthday to You*
I splashed the cold water on my face. It was really dark out, and I was just really stressed out. I knelt down by the ocean's edge and sighed. Kagome was asleep by the fire a few feet away. She was asking about Kikyo. So, I told her everything. But now I can't stop thinking about her. And Kagome looks a lot like her. When I first moved here, I almost thought it was Kikyo there, alive. But it was Kagome.
Tomorrow we have to go back. The earthquake should be over. But, I'd better get some sleep. I'm already worn out from today. I walked over to the opposite side of the fire from Kagome and went to sleep.
"Inu Yaaaasha.." I opened my eyes. There was a shadow over my face. The little girl giggled, "You look funny." I got up slowly, "Good morning to you too." I looked around for Kagome. She wasn't there. I asked the little girl, "Where's Kagome?" She thought for a minute, "Oh yeah! I wanted to play hide-and-go-seek, so she hid. I didn't find her yet, so I came to ask you for help!" I sighed. At least she didn't just disappear. I looked down at the girl, "So, I guess that means we have to find her." The girl smiled, "Yay!"
While we were searching for Kagome, I talked to the little girl for a while, "So anyway, what's your name kid?" The girl smiled, "My name's Yuri! What's your name." I smirked, "I'm Inu Yasha. Don't forget it." Yuri said, "I want to call you Snuffles!" I blinked, "What?" Yuri giggled, "I want to call you Snuffles because you have doggie ears on your head!" I sighed. Little kid can be very annoying if they don't get what they want, "Fine, call me whatever you want. Just don't start crying." Yuri laughed, "I'm not going to laugh silly!" I heard something, and my ears perked up. Something was moving in the bushes. I smirked, "I wonder where Kagome could have gone..." I swiveled around on my feet towards the bushes. I heard Kagome gasp. Yuri's eyes lit up, "Did you find her!?" I smirked, "Hmmm... I think I did!" I burst through the bushes and said, "We found you!" Kagome laughed, "Wow. Inu Yasha, you really can use your ears." I smiled, "Yep."
A few hours later, we had returned back to the city. The only real destruction was in the parking lot of the movie theatre. We dropped of Yuri at the police station so her mother could pick her up. Later, we got back to Kagome's house. I fell asleep so fast.
The rest of the week went by pretty smoothly. The house hadn't been damaged by the earthquake at all, so it didn't have to be repaired. Mrs.Higurashi was always fussing over us, asking if we were okay, or if we were hurt. Otherwise, nothing much happened. But I saw a slight disappointment in Kagome. I asked her, "What's wrong? You're upset." Kagome sighed, "It's just that, summer went by so fast. I have to go back to school in a few days." I nodded, "Yeah. But hey, you get to go to school. I don't think I can, the ears and all." Kagome smiled, "Maybe by the end of te week we can figure something out if you really do want to go to school." I shook my head this time, "No, it's okay. I almost didn't go last year anyway." Kagome sighed again, "Oh, okay then. It's just that, school is so boring now when you're not there with me." "We'll see what happens."
Finally the day came. September 2nd, the day before Kagome's birthday, the day of the party. Early in the morning, Souta woke me up and whispered, "Hey, can you take Kagome out somewhere? Mom and Grandpa and me are all going to decorate for the party." I didn't want to get up at the moment, but, seeing as it was Kagome's birthday, how could I refuse? I slowly got up and mumbled, "Okay." Souta said, "Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!" He ran back upstairs as fast as he could. While I was eating breakfast, Kagome came down bleary-eyed, "G'morning." I said, "Hey, you want to go somewhere today birthday girl?" Kagome's eyes opened up, "What? How did you know about my birthday?" I smirked, "Souta told me. Since you have school tomorrow, I thought you should celebrate today. So, I'll ask again: You want to go somewhere?" She smiled, "Okay."
We wandered around the city, as usual. I was waiting for Kagome to pick somewhere to go. Eventually she said, "Maybe we could go to the lake? They have boat rentals there, so we could go on a boat ride. Hmm?" I smiled, "That's a good idea." After a while of meandering around the buildings and people, we had made our way to the park. Kagome was busy staring at the blossoming sakura trees while I quickly rented out a boat. I called Kagome and she ran over to the boat and hopped in, "I've never gone boating here before!" I said, "Me neither. But it's really beautiful out today, it should be fun."
I figured out how to use the oars to make the boat move after a few minutes of struggling. Once we were positioned near the middle of the lake, I stopped. All around us were boats filled with couples taking advantage of the beautiful afternoon. Kagome smiled warmly, "Thanks for taking me out Inu Yasha. It was really nice of you." I laughed nervously. Just seeing her smile made me happy, "Oh, it was no big deal. After all, it is your birthday. You're supposed to be happy on your birthday anyway. I'm just helping out." Kagome giggled, "Oh Inu Yasha, you're so nice." She glanced around her surroundings before her eyes stopped at one of the sakura trees. The wind blew on it's branches, blowing of hundreds of soft pink petals. Kagome sighed in awe, "It's beautiful."
Kagome looked so beautiful just then. Her hair shined in the light, the sakura blossoms floating around her face, her eyes full of happiness. I moved closer to her. I wanted to see her up close. Kagome turned back to face me. I continued moving my face closer to her's. My heart was beating so hard, I was almost surprised it didn't jump out of my chest. I closed the space between us, and I kissed her. It wasn't any kind of make-out kiss, just a small, peck on the lips. After a moment, we parted, and Kagome was blushing a lot. I tried to speak, but I couldn't. I can't believe I actually kissed her! Finally I spoke up, "I wanted to do that for a while now." Kagome smiled shyly, the blush still evident on her cheeks, "Me too." Aftre a few more minutes of staring at each other, I rowed back to the dock. Then, we made our way back to the shrine.
I grinned, "C'mon!" Kagome smiled curiously, "What is it?" "Just hurry up, I want you to see something." I opened the door to the house. It was dark. Kagome said, "It's so dark." She flicked the switch, "That's--" "SURPRISE!" Kagome gasped and started laughing, "Oh my gosh, you guys are great!" The living room was colorfully decorated with streamers, and there were endless bowls of food out. Mrs.Higurashi hugged Kagome, "Happy birthday!" Kagome smiled, "I love you guys! I didn't expect this." Souta grinned while dumping piles of treats onto his plate, "Well, duh, that's why it's called a surprise! You'd think that since you're another year older you'd be smarter too." Kagome took Souta's plate and began eating, "Thank you very much." Souta whined for a little bit before he directed his attention at me, "Hey, Inu Yasha!" He winked and ran upstairs. I followed him. I had to get Kagome's present. Souta came out of his room holding the jewelry box with the hairpin in it, and the box. He handed methe box and said, "Kagome's face looks so funny when she opens presents! Watch!" We ran back downstairs. Souta handed Kagome the jewery box and said, "This is from me. I hope you like it."
Kagome's eyes lit up as she opened the case, "Oh my god! It's beautiful Souta! How were you able to buy it?" Souta hugged Kagome, "Just saving up." Kagome hugged Souta, "Thank you so much!" She slipped the pin into her hair. And I must say, Souta has good taste when it comes to buying gifts for girls. Kagome was ecstatic, and it was beautiful on her. Souta is definitely going to get a good girlfriend when he gets older.
I sat down next to Kagome and gave her the box, "Kagome, I didn't know about your birthday until last week, and I didn't really do much shopping so, I hope this is good enough." Kagome slowly tore the wrapping off the box. She lifted the top and pulled out all of the bubble wrap. Then she began to pull the angel out. Kagome gasped in awe as she set in on the table. The light beautifully shone off of the crystal wings that surrounded the angel. Kagome wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled me into a hug where I could hardly breathe, "It's gorgeous! You shouldn't have!" Once I my lungs could function properly again, I smiled, "I thought you would like it. So I decided that I had to get it for you. I'm glad you like it." Kagome laughed, "You guys are great!" She pulled Souta back into a hug and she gave us both a kiss on the cheek. Souta was laughing at me, probably because I began to blush.
Everybody partied some more for a while. I think I ate too many doritos though. After everybody had settled down, Kagome brought me outside and we sat under the Goshinboku. I asked her, "So, how was you birthday?" She smiled, "The best one ever! I had a lot of fun. I was really surprised when Souta showed up with the hairpin. I didn't think he would be able to afford it." I nodded, "That's what I thought when he bought it." Kagome asked, "You didn't have to lend him any money?" I shook my head, "Nope. He said he was really happy because he had gotten enough money in time." Kagome glanced over at Souta, who was playing with Buyo by the wellhouse, "Yeah. A lot of people say that younger siblings are the worst. But they're not. Only sometimes." I grinned, "I guess you're right. I've seen some sibling rivalry gone wild sometimes, so it really surprises me that you and your brother get along so well." Kagome said, "It's probably because last year I was never home. I'd always go back to the Sengoku Jidai whenever I had the chance. Because we were separated so much, I think he felt like he needed his big sister back. Two years ago, today, was the first time I had ever been to the Sengoku Jidai, the first time I met Inu Yasha."
Suddenly Souta yelled, "Kagome! Look!" He pointed at the wellhouse. A bright blue light flashed from the inside, but quickly faded away. Kagome gasped, "Oh no." She got up and ran to the hut, I followed closely behind her. Kagome grabbed a flashlight and looked down the well. I looked too. Lying on the bottom of the well was a man who looked just like me....
